Renaissance Dance music provides some of the most simple yet satisfying pieces to play in ensemble on a wide range of instruments. They are suitable for recorders, modern strings, woodwinds or brass, or where available, reproductions of 16th century instruments, such as crumhorns, viols or shawms to name but a few.Also appearing in the publication Chording to the Consort, this individual piece is presented in full score and with separate parts for each of the lines. Wold Meridian editions of these pieces have been created to make performing them as accessible as possible. Chords have been provided so that the piece can be performed with just the melody line and a simple accompaniment. Each piece can be heard in a video on YouTube with illustrations and historical background information. Even more helpful for players who are less experienced in reading harmony lines, there is a YouTube video link featuring each part, where it is heard initially on its own with the chords, on repeats with the melody line added and finally together with all the parts in the whole ensemble. Blest Mary Walks Amid the Thorn (Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging) is a German folk carol that is thought to date to the 16th century. It first appears in print in 1850 as a pilgrimage song, having been spread orally in the traditionally Catholic state of Thuringia, a densely forested area in central Germany. In the 20th century, the song became popular in a version relating the story of Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, on her journey to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. The text uses the popular Medieval symbol of the rose for the Virgin Mary and speaks of roses blooming on barren thorn-wood as Mary bears her child through the forest. Monsell, an English poet, was written to the tune of the German song, Wie Lieblich Ist Der Maien by Johann Steurlein. This arrangement is for an Intermediate SAB (soprano, alto, bass) Choir with a piano accompaniment. It is appropriate as an anthem and processional, particularly for Thanksgiving, but appreciated in worship services and programs year round. In simple, vivid language derived from biblical images in Psalm 65, these verses thank the Lord for a bountiful harvest and offer God the harvest of our lives. The tune was composed in 1575, and it reflects the close harmonies of moving melody lines popular in the 16th Century. The second verse provides an optional opportunity for singing a cappello. A separate sheet for voices is provided along with the score.
