The Austrian Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was a prolific composer of light music, particularly dance tunes such as waltzes, polkas and quadrilles. His father (also Johann) was determined that his children should not follow him into the ‘music business’, so young Johann Jr studied the violin in secret. He was only able to follow his musical ambitions once his parents had separated and, even then, had to deal with opposition from his father. Because of the success of his compositions, Johann Strauss II is often given credit for the popularity of the waltz in 19th Century Vienna. He was known to his contemporaries as ‘The Waltz King’. This piece is taken from his Lockvogel Waltzer, Op. 118.

ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTSPlease note: This is the arrangement for clarinet and bass clarinet!The Sonatina For Bflat Clarinet And Bassoon was written between March and June 2018 and is dedicated to my good bassoonist friend Jane Thompson and her family. It was her husband, Astley Jones, who asked me to write the piece as a way of showing her how much we all loved her! I thought that was the sweetest thing and the rest is history!We hoped to give this piece its world premiere at some point in 2018 or 2019, with Jane herself playing the bassoon and myself on clarinet. However, the first major hurdle was Jane having an operation on each hand to cure her Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and the second big hurdle was Covid-19! Due to life’s normal pressures, the work still awaits its long awaited for premiere.It has three movements, fast, slow, fast, and a total duration of approximately 15 minutes.I have also transcribed the bassoon part for bass clarinet so the piece can be played by either combination. It could even be played by two bass clarinets, which would be hilarious!I feel, as a player myself, that its main challenge is in sheer breathing and playing stamina as it certainly gets you working up a sweat by the end, but its comical, quirky character will hopefully make it great fun for players and audience alike.

Prelude II from George Gershwin's Three Preludes for piano composed in 1926 and transcribed for Bb Clarinet and two Bassoons. Gershwin referred to the piece as a sort of blues lullaby. The second Prelude is distinctly influenced by jazz and the piece begins with a subdued melody winding its way above a smooth, steady bassline. The harmonies and melodies of this piece are built on thirds, emphasizing both the interval of the seventh and the major/minor duality of the blues scale. In the second section, the key, tempo, and thematic material change and the opening melody and bass return in the final section. It is built on a series of leitmotifs, developed from melodic and rhythmic ideas as featured in the opening section. These reappear in different guises throughout the music. The piece follows an arch form – each section is referenced again later on in reverse order, with the ending an exact repeat of the opening five bars - hence the title 'Waterwheel'.The piece itself is reasonably slow, usually taking around 6 minutes to perform at the suggested tempo marking. This makes it appropriate for Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate players, either in a school environment or elsewhere.

It is built on a series of leitmotifs, developed from melodic and rhythmic ideas as featured in the opening section. These reappear in different guises throughout the music. The piece follows an arch form – each section is referenced again later on in reverse order, with the ending an exact repeat of the opening five bars - hence the title 'Waterwheel'.The piece itself is reasonably slow, usually taking around 6 minutes to perform at the suggested tempo marking. This makes it appropriate for Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate players, either in a school environment or elsewhere.
