Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1297340). Here is what arranger David Mathie writes about the 5 Duos by Rossini.Gioachino Rossini was an Italian composer, born in 1792 and died in 1868. He was known primarily for his thirty-nine operas, although he did compose some chamber pieces and a few orchestral works. His 5 Duos for 2 Horns in E♠were probably written in 1806 when Rossini was fourteen and living in Bologna, although they weren’t published until 1861. While it may seem unusual for a fourteen-year-old to be composing, by then Rossini had already written his String Sonatas at the age of twelve, and those works are still performed today. An explanation for why Rossini would write a set of duets for horn may be that his father was a professional trumpet player, and taught his son Gioachino to play the horn at a very young age.These five pieces were written for the natural (valveless) horns of the time, and like the horn writing of Mozart some very technical passages can be found in the lower part, especially in duets four and five. We can also hear the future opera composer’s arias in number three. The duos will work quite well on recitals and also for casual duet playing. Because trombonists can never have enough practice in clefs, I have transcribed the duets into three versions each using bass, tenor and alto clefs.The 5 Duos in 3 Clefs by Rossini arranged by David Mathie are perfect studies for any aged performer to begin learning Tenor and Alto Clefs. The duet format allows the teacher to play alongside the student, which is always so valuable for learning. They are of moderate difficulty making them well-suited for the Clef Novice to begin adding these necessary tools to their technique.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792437). Beethoven’s two duos were originally written for Clarinet and Cello, but are often performed with Bassoon. They were published without an opus and were probably intended as gifts for friends or to be performed at a private chamber music soireé. Mr. Sauer’s arrangements are delightful to play. Duos 1 & 2 have three movements; the first in the traditional Sonata form, the second a slow movement Larghetto and third movement a zippy Rondo. Duo 3 begins with a first movement Allegro and the second movement is an Aria with Variations, having a quick gigue-like Allegro tacked on to the end.These duos may be performed by Tenor and Bass Trombone or 2 Tenors, with the 2nd part needing an f-attachment to reach down for some D’s and C’s. The first parts are all in Tenor clef and these threee works are of moderate difficulty.

Petros Shoujounian, Armenian/Canadian composer has written Twelve Duos for Tubas based on the folksong collection of the Armenian priest Komitas, known as the founder of the Armenian national school of music and one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology. Below are comments from the composer about his inspiration in writing these Twelve Duos for Tubas. My interest in the collected works of Komitas's ethnographical songs was aroused when I was introduced to Bela Bartok's similar works followed by Alan Hovhaness's huge creative world. Bartok completed his project having at his disposal a large collection of ethnographic music, while Hovhannes studied the wealth of Komitas's music with great interest. It is difficult to say to what extent the Armenian underpinning of Hovhannes's works are nurtured by Komitas's musical world, but his classical interpretation of the Armenian ethnographical music created a huge interest in the listener. Needless to say, there is also Aram Katchaturian's legacy, which at its core has the ardent presence of the Armenian spirit, nurtured by Komitas's very existence. Komitas has left a collection of about 3,000 cleaned versions of ethnographic song and dance pieces, of which 1,700 has reaches us, about 400 of which have been activated. I believe that in those beautiful musical fragments reside the power to be revived, once we enrich them with colorful musical instruments and unbounded polyphonic imagination. This is the motivation behind my own work and these Twelve Duos for Tubas: to make the essence of our ethnographic music accessible through Komitas. These Twelve Duos are appropriate for advanced performers and may be performed on C Tuba, F Tuba and the larger B-flat Bass Tubas.

A near contemporary and rival of Haydn, Leopold Hofmann was held in the highest regard in his native Vienna where he served as Kapellmeister at St Stephens Cathedral, a position to which Mozart might have succeeded had he lived. Hofmann was a prolific composer of instrumental music and he wrote a good deal of chamber music although much of it has been lost. Hofmanns chamber music output includes a large amount of music for flute. Among these works are14 flute duos, of which only three works with reasonable claim to authenticity survive. If the Breitkopf Catalogue datings are reasonably accurate we can deduce that the flute duos were composed during the years ca 1767 - 1772, a period which also saw the composition of the majority of Hofmanns flute concertos. Although these beautifully composed duos were doubtless intended for the insatiable amateur music market they may also have functioned as instructional pieces.

Belcke explains that the duos are all in the same key of B-flat and may be transposed into any key or clef, which adds a serious challenge for the performers beyond the initial intermediate level of the music. Artaria Editions AE407-2Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831) was at one time the most famous composer in the world. The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyels career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyels productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Among the authentic chamber works the duos occupy a particularly interesting place. Pleyel composed duos of varying technical difficulty in order to appeal to the widest possible market and he clearly intended that players progress from easy works, signalled by titles such as Duo Facile or Petit Duo, to more ambitious works. The present works, composed ca 1788, lie between these two extremes: they require players with well-developed techniques but do not present exceptional difficulties to the performer. They are graceful, attractive works and their great popularity in Pleyels lifetime comes as no surprise to the modern performer.

Artaria Editions AE407-1Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831) was at one time the most famous composer in the world. The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyels career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyels productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Among the authentic chamber works the duos occupy a particularly interesting place. Pleyel composed duos of varying technical difficulty in order to appeal to the widest possible market and he clearly intended that players progress from easy works, signalled by titles such as Duo Facile or Petit Duo, to more ambitious works. The present works, composed ca 1788, lie between these two extremes: they require players with well-developed techniques but do not present exceptional difficulties to the performer. They are graceful, attractive works and their great popularity in Pleyels lifetime comes as no surprise to the modern performer.

The Six Duos Op. 50 for Trombones were originally written for two Cellos by Offenbach probably as teaching aids or for a light chamber music selection for an evening soireÌe. Being a Cellist himself, these works were most likely first played by Offenbach. The Six Duos contain over 50 minutes worth of music and are appropriate for intermediate to advanced performers. Both parts have f-attachment notes, but are not mandatory, as Mr. Sauer has written alternate ones.
