Suite for orchestra n. 4 Scènes Pittoresques Scènes Pittoresques, the fourth and best known of Massenet's seven orchestral suites, stands out for its four unrelated but perfectly matched subjects; dedicated to his composer friend Émile Paladilhe, it was performed in Paris in 1874 by the Edouard Colonne Orchestra. Angelus, the third movement, the largest of the suite, has the character of a hymn evoking the atmosphere of a French cathedral. Transcription for Symphonic band.

Hair is a rock musical by James Rado and Gerome Ragni (lyrics) and Galt MacDermot (music) created off-Broadway, in a cellar in Greenwich Village, in October 1967 and then played on Broadway at the Public Theater from April 1968 for four years without interruption. The New York Times said: It's finally the first musical that speaks to today. A product of the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, some of his songs, inspired by New Age theory, became anthems of the peace movements against the Vietnam War. After a first export to London, the French version was created in Paris at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin on May 30, 1969, its naked scenes causing a real scandal. The song Laissez entrer le soleil (Let the sunshine in) was performed by Julien Clerc during this French creation.Toutes les parties de chœur sont doublées à l’orchestre. The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonal constructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic idea behind the musical development. Though more or less equal with the ensemble in the first movement, the piano clearly takes over as leader in the second and third movements as the goaldirected formal narrative of the movements becomes more obvious. The first movement, Murky Waters, is a free fantasy in which the piano and ensemble “unpack†the musical potential of the basic material. A number of melodic ideas emerge—some lyrical and some disjunct. A brief coda prepares for the next movement. The second movement, The Forgotten, is a lament led by the piano. The harmonic colors of thepiano’s sustaining sounds interact with the more linear textures of the winds and brass. The third movement, Casting Infinity, is purposeful and structured as a march with trio. It is in many respects a symphonic work for flute trio, with the characteristics and order of the four movements resembling the structure of a classical symphony. As a child during the Space Race, I was immensely interested in both terrestrial- and extraterrestrial-exploration, and as I composed this music a half-century later it made the most sense to set the musical ideas in this manner. In the first movement, Black Hole, two contrasting themes are presented and immediately developed: a theme of polyphonic gestures, with a contrasting second theme of chordal-textured music. The characteristic and somewhat liquid sound of the flute trio in the second theme is especially evident. The static and evolving blocks of music represent the gravitational collection of matter by a black hole. The second movement, A Crescent Moon, 1969, celebrates astronaut Neil Armstrong's moonwalk in July 1969. This slow, lyrical movement possesses a nocturnal quality while features the alto flute as a solo instrument. The third movement, SETI Radio (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), is a slow through-composed scherzo. With piccolo, a high tessitura of the flute trio range is heard. The fourth movement is a dynamic Rondo Variations form.
