It is one of the pieces included in his second book of Préludes, and is marked Allegretto ma non troppo. Nature and innocence demand a spontaneous and laidback approach to those delicate and poetic riffs to match the colour and aroma of fragrant purple shrubs. Birds may be heard calling, accompanied by the distant refrain of a shepherd’s flute in this harmonious and homogeneous prelude — an admirable contrast to numbers IV and VI.In direct connection with this prelude, Marguerite Long mentions a Debussy souvenir pairing the scent of sea mist and coastal pines, and if she is correct this would take us to Arcachon in south west France. It is possible that the young composer first went there in 1880 with the baroness Nadejda Von Meck and later in 1904 when he stayed with the uncle of Emma Bardac (neÌe Moyse), his future bride.The pastoral and familiar poetry of a woodland scene where the earth’s pervasive scent mingles with the subdued display of patches in purple.— CortotA peaceful melody on a shepherd's pipe, resonating on the silent moorland. To play it is to be taken inside a sound world greater than the instrument itself. In other words, it seems to demand orchestration. Whether the fanfare call of Puckâ??s Dance, the sotto voce flurries evoking The Wind Over The Plains, or the deepest and highest reaches of the musical spectrum explored in the under-water world of The Sunken Cathedral, Debussyâ??s music seems to drop hints at obvious orchestral manoeuvres. His great skill, of course, was condensing these musical ideas to the piano. But the fruit is there fo the taking, and indeed other orchestrations exist of the complete suite of piano preludes â?? Books I and II. So, why another?This particular suite cherry-picks some of my own favourite movements from the suite, and arranges them in a â??symphonicâ?? structure to present an opening, expository movement (The Wind Over The Plains), a romantic Adagio (The Girl With The Flaxen Hair), a sprightly â??scherzoâ?? (Puckâ??s Dance), concluding with an epic finale (The Sunken Cathedral). This condensed suite may make the music more approachable for some orchestras, and offers something shorter to concert programmes wishing to feature other major works alongside, instead of performing all 24 preludes.I hope you enjoy performing this suite as much as I enjoyed arranging it.Instrumentation: Piccolo 2 Flutes 2 Oboes Cor Anglais 2 Clarinets in Bâ? A simple arrangement of the classic HIt is not only because of Gershwin\'s enthusiasm for the organ that his
\'3 Pr.ludes\' virtually suggest themselves to be performed on the organ. They are preludes in a traditional style, character pieces with idiomatic jazz figurations and exciting harmonies. Therefore it is certainly appropriate to use these miniatures in churches and especially in organ concerts. Jazz music on the church organ? Why not! Although notated jazz music is not real improvised jazz music, Gershwin undoubtedly influenced jazz (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock), and his preludes are a valuable addition even to the organ repertoire.erbie Hancock \"cool\" tune. The melody get\'s passed around the quartet and allows for improvisation, with a Bass Trombone and 1st Trombone solo in the middle. Aimed at amateur ensembles with an intermediate range, with solos that explore the harmony of the tune without getting too crazy.
