A list of names gives an idea of the riches: Bizet, Berlioz, Gounod, Massenet, Meyerbeer, Offenbach, Saint-Saëns, Thomas, Lalo and Halévy, plus Italian composers who wrote operas to French texts for Paris production, including Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi. With such a treasure trove, in is inevitable that some very fine music has been allowed to drift into obscurity. In his time, Delibes was celebrated for his melodic gift, but of the more than twenty operas and operettas that he wrote, only Lakmé is performed today, and even it is rare. The Flower Duet (Sous le dôme épais) for soprano and mezzo-soprano, is by far the best known number from this, or any, Delibes opera. The lovely sinuous melody has been used as background music for numerous films, television shows and commercials.This arrangement for string quartet is full length and includes the opening recitative, which can be omitted if desired. It has been transposed from the original B major to C major, which lies better for strings, as well as being easier to read at sight. CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Originally composed for Violin and Piano I have transcribed and arranged these for Double Bass in Orchestral tuning aiming them towards the advanced intermediate/advanced student. Lili Boulanger was the sister of the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger who taught Aaron Copland, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass amongst others. She was a composer for the last 10 years of her tragically short life – she died at 25. Her music was highly influenced by Faure and Debussy. The Nocturne begins sparsely, with bare octave figures wound about with a theme built from a repetitive rise-and-fall figure. As the texture becomes thicker the violin becomes more virtuosic and begins to climb. There is no harmonic resolution until the final ppp note in the top register, which is answered by a low octave from the piano. The Cortege is more lively without being fast. Shifting rhythmic accents, tricky runs and contrasting dynamics make this an exciting piece.

Johannes Brahms is best known for his symphonies, concerti and large scale chamber works, but his catalog of over 200 Lieder shows he was also a master of small forms and intimate expression. Wiegenlied (Lullaby), included in this set of arrangements for string quartet, is one of the best known and most loved melodies ever written. His original gently syncopated accompaniment, reproduced here, makes an elegant backdrop for it. The set opens with Sapphische Ode (Sapphic Ode), whose title is not directly connected to the ancient Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos, but refers to the verse form of the poem Brahms set, that bears her name. The melody resembles the theme of the slow movement from Brahms’s violin concerto, written a few years earlier. Following it is Wenn du nur zuweilen lächelst (If you only sometimes smile), a fine example of the mood of longing and melancholy that Brahms often depicted in both songs and instrumental music. The music moves back and forth between major and minor, and the flowing 9/8 meter occasionally varies the 3+3+3 pulse to 2+2+2+3 in a natural-seeming way.Brahms never wrote an opera, but Von ewiger Liebe (Of Eternal Love), which builds from a somber opening, through a stormy middle section to a powerful climax, gives us a sense of what a Brahms operatic scene, in this case a love duet, might have sounded like. This is the first movement from Shavano Suite, a set of four pieces inspired by folklore and campfire tales from the Mount Shavano/Maysville area in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The suite was originally scored for classical guitar duet, but this version is expanded to classical guitar, string quartet and percussion. The percussion requires a large drum or timpani. Performance time for the suite is 17 minutes. This movement, however, works well as a stand alone concert piece, with a performance time of 6 minutes. This is the final movement from Suite Grandkids which contains six pieces originally scored for classical guitar trio, one for each of the grandkids that I had at that time (2005). This duet version is for classical guitar with flute, oboe or violin. This download contains score and all parts. The picture of my grandkids looks like a poster for cultural diversity. Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. Soren's Jig was written in Scottish style and being the finale of the suite, revisits each grandkid in round form. . Performance time is 4 minutes and 15 seconds.
