It was only subsequently that he arranged them into 4 cycles of 12 preludes, drawing also from earlier compositions. Written in a traditional pianistic style, they are short sketches which are sometimes characterized by musical thoughts, sometimes by moods or by natural phenomena. The fourth volume presented here is once again divided into two cycles of 6 preludes each, with the first cycle paying tribute to the landscapes and towns of Friuli north of Venice.The 48 Preludi are either short sketches or expansive concert pieces which also allude to types of setting or themes from the piano music since Scarlatti. Not nearly all of the Rachmaninoff preludes are intricate, difficult and advanced in their technical and interpretive demands. This quiet, flowing piece, with its undulating LH accompaniment, and simple two-note theme, moved through the various possibilities in the F# natural minor scale, is really his equivalent piece to Beethoven's Fur Elise. No kidding! So, examine how logical and composerly the surface complexities have been ordered, so as to make the piece a finely patterned and memoriz-able thing. Our tempo here is about the same as Richter, so one COULD go slower. Bring our the tune over the LH figures, and pedal for clarity. Only a few wide stretches have been truncated and/or arpeggiated for our convenience. MBB.

The 5 against 4 accomp has been changed to straight 1/8 notes. The majorly obscure rhythms in the melody have been rendered in very equivalent but decipherable terms. The major sections are all intact, otherwise, and the LH has been simplified, but not to the point of pedantry. So, this piece serves as a fine introduction to this part of the repertoire, at an earlier point in one's pianistic and musical development. Full-length, original key, of course. Horowitz played the piece many times throughout his later years, so we offer it as both a tribute to him, and and introduction to his unique melodic artistry for less experienced players. MBB.
