This score is based on the old British Carol "I saw three ships." There are seven variations preceding the fugue. After the theme has been stated, the first two variations extend the theme; the third variation introduces the pedals. The next three variations are in the style of Baroque genres: the fourth variation is a noel written as an homage to Daquin; the fifth variation is a figured chorale, in which the chorale Von Himmel hoch, da komm ich her makes its first appearance; and the sixth is a Handelian rigaudon. The seventh variation is a "carillion" in which Von Himmel hoch reappears. After a dramatic, dissonant chord, the score concludes with a chorale fugue during which Von Himmel hoch appears in the pedal. The singing of Dona nobis pacem is an annual holiday tradition at the Eastman School of Music. Students, faculty, and alumni gather in the Main Hall at the end of fall semester to hear music inspired by the holiday season, concluding with the traditional round as a send-off. No one knows who wrote this little gem, but it is commonly assumed to be from the eighteenth century. I wrote the Variations on Dona nobis pacem to play at a gathering of University of Rochester alumni in November of 2016. In creating a solo piano piece from vocal material, I introduce the tune alone, then its bass, which is similar to that of Bach\'s Goldberg Variations. Nine variations and a finale follow in a variety of styles that recall Classical and Romantic-period composers. -David Evan Thomas

Summertime Variations is the third arrangement I have made of Gershwin's Summertime - and the first for solo piano. It begins and ends very quietly and cantabile with a meditation on the well-known opening motif. The complete melody then forms the basis for the swinging and extremely virtuoso Presto Variations of the central section.

The work was composed as a concert piece for my classical solo recitals, but I alos play Summertime Variations as an encore in my regular performances in jazz festivals such as in Montreux. (Fazil Say).

Written in 2007 on the occasion of a friend'sbirthday, these variations are inspired by the music of the classical andromantic period. Among the most famous collections of the flute repertoire, forexample, are those of Mercadante, Beethoven and Chopin. In particular, those ofMercadante were taken as a model.

The theme is followed by four variations and a coda,bright and virtuosic.

The choice of dynamics and articulation is left to thediscretion of the performer, who will have regard to the execution practicetypical of the classical era.
