The Dreaming Sea was my first paid composition commission, a piece I wrote in April 2020. For the composition commission, my author friend Sterling Wisniewski requested me to score a short story of his, with the score I provided being expected to tell the story of the words through music and accompany original artwork. His short story is included as follows:A cardboard boat sifts the surface of the sea. A little girl,eyes closed, arms wide and crowned with a paper hat, stands at the front of the deck. Unsinkable - that's what she was. Her imagination bounced the boat on the tension of theworld, almost like it wasn't there. Her eyes were closed, yet she saw everything. On shore, a crowd of dirty sailors went about their work. Nasty mouths swore and harsh fists carried their cargo to their strong, dirty boat. A boy, no taller than a barrel, was in the midst of the buff shoulders and fit forearms. He peaked between the muscle mountains.He saw her. Eyes closed and arms wide, sailing away from the Sun and into the appearing Moon. The wind flapped her hair like the sail of a boat. The boy pried between the men and ran to the end of the dock, stuck his flat hand over his forehead to see. The boy could've sworn that she saw him. He could've sworn the boat swooped in a foot from his face. He could've sworn he heard her giggle. If anything, he thought he knew she saw him.The boy's father, the largest of all the men, wearing a real sailor's hat, gripped the boy's shoulder, spun him away from view of the cardboard boat, and without a word dragged him to the solid wooden ship in front of them. The robust crew pulled ropes and pushed out to set sail towards the setting Sun in the west.The boy soon slipped out of his father's grip and ran to the edge of the boat. Standing on his tiptoes, he hovered his eyes over the dock. There she was - eyes closed and arms wide, the wind flowing through her hair while her cardboard boat skipped the seas like a stone. he could've sworn she was thinking about him. he could've sworn he would see her again. This piece, for soprano and alto duet with piano and flute, speaks of the persistence of the dove, the peace maker, faced with war, famine, poverty, etc. It was written when the United States went to war with Afghanistan and Representative Barbara Lee stood up and was the lone voice against war. Although the piece is secular, the use of the symbol of the dove would work well in religious services.The piece involves a two against three rhythm which suggests the difficulties the dove faces flying for peace against the overwhelming odds of war. The .mp3 file is computer generated with choral oohs for the voices. I am so happy that smoking in enclosed public places is now illegal in the UK and in many other countries, but this song was written in the 1980s when people had to breath the pollution created by inconsiderate smokers, and, of course, there are still countries where this is the case. So I decided to publish the song even though the battle is thankfully won here. The sound sample is my own performance with some additional (un-notated) improvisations on cello and vibraphone. The pdf file contains the score and parts. The music has also been arranged as an instrumental duo called Laid back bounce, also available on this site. I went out this morning along the way to work when without warning I was faced with clouds of murk refrain: Sing Down with the smokers who infect the air with clouds hate their unthinking uncaring unblinking hate the stinking coughing crowds! I went down to the station and was waiting for my train but to my irritation the stinkers were there again. [refrain] Wouldn't it be pleasant to enjoy a drink in a theatre bar discussing the play or wouldn't it be jolly just to sing along with pals in a cozy pub along the way or wouldn't it be nice to go any where and not have to share with every breath some secondhand smoke and firsthand death. [refrain] I was eating my fav'rite curry but the air was getting thick and I felt I had to hurry because the smokers made me feel sick [refrain] It's fine bright hot and sunny and I'd love to have a drink but why spend time and money where the smokers sit and stink? [refrain] Wouldn't it be pleasant just to pass the time at a social do or a meeting hall or wouldn't it be jolly to dance the night away with the one you love at a disco or ball wouldn't it be nice to go any where and not have to share with every breath some secondhand smoke and firsthand death [refrain].

This arrangement, suitable for competent cellists, is designed to produce a full sound despite the small group size. The melody is swapped between parts to give each player a chance to shine. Suitable for any event, from wedding receptions to concerts, and always guaranteed to draw attention. Arrangement duration: ≈ 3:45Notes on the arrangement:Some sections are technically challenging, including double stopping in 3rds, 6ths, and open string octaves, and use of tenor clef. However anyone wanting to simplify this arrangement to make it more accessible to less experienced players would be able to do so; either by splitting up the double stops between a larger group of player, and/or transposing the melody down an octave.Performance notes:This piece should be played with energy and vigour, as intended by Adele. A good pulse and a steady speed will help players to keep together. Any repeated quavers should be played nice and staccato, and quite percussively. I’ve added just a little fingering here and there if there’s really only one place on the neck to play what’s on the page.
