Moonlight Serenade" arranged here for Tuba Quintet, is an American popular song composed by Glenn Miller with subsequent lyrics by Mitchell Parish. It was an immediate phenomenon when first released in May 1939 as an instrumental arrangement and was adopted as Miller’s signature tune. In 1991, Miller’s recording of "Moonlight Serenade" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.<br> <br> The song, recorded on April 4, 1939 on RCA Bluebird, was a Top Ten hit on the U.S. pop charts in 1939, reaching number three on the Billboard charts, where it stayed for fifteen weeks. It was the number 5 top pop hit of 1939 in the Billboard year-end tally. Glenn Miller had five records in the top 20 songs of 1939 on Billboard′s list.<br> <br> In the UK, "Moonlight Serenade" was released as the A-side of a 78 on His Master’s Voice, with "American Patrol" as the B-side. The recording reached number twelve in the UK in March 1954, staying on the chart for one week. In a medley with "Little Brown Jug" and "In the Mood", "Moonlight Serenade" reached number thirteen on the UK charts in January 1976, in a chart run of eight weeks.<br> <br> The recording was also issued as a V-Disc, No. 39A, in November 1943.<br> <br> The recording used a clarinet-led saxophone section, which is widely considered[citation needed] the classic Glenn Miller style. Miller studied the Schillinger technique with Joseph Schillinger, who is credited with helping Miller create the "Miller sound", and under whose tutelage he himself composed "Moonlight Serenade".<br> <br> The song evolved from a 1935 version entitled "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep", with music by Glenn Miller and lyrics by Eddie Heyman to a version called "Gone with the Dawn" with lyrics by George Simon, and "The Wind in the Trees" with lyrics by Mitchell Parish. In his biography of Glenn Miller, George T. Simon recounted how vocalist Al Bowlly of the Ray Noble Orchestra sang him the Eddie Heyman lyrics to the Glenn Miller music of "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep" in 1935. The Noble Orchestra never recorded the song. Finally it ended up as "Moonlight Serenade" because Robbins Music bought the music and learned that Miller was recording a cover of "Sunrise Serenade", a Frankie Carle associated song, for RCA Victor. They thought "Moonlight" would be a natural association for "Sunrise".<br> <br> "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep" was composed in 1935 with lyrics by Eddie Heyman and music by Glenn Miller. After "Moonlight Serenade", originally released solely as an instrumental, became a smash hit in 1939, Mitchell Parish wrote new lyrics for the music under that title.<br> <br> A notable vocal version can be found on Frank Sinatra’s Moonlight Sinatra released in 1965, which also contains "Moon Love", "Moonlight Becomes You", and "Oh, You Crazy Moon", which were recorded by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. "Moonlight Serenade" can also be found on Nothing But the Best, a 2008 Frank Sinatra greatest hits compilation by Reprise, on My Way: The Best of Frank Sinatra from 1997 by Warner Bros., and the Frank Sinatra compilation Greatest Love Songs from 2002. Also, this mindset helps in composing, because instead of seeing things as wrong chord versus correct chord, you simply see it as every harmony as a name. Like many things in life, theoritcal concepts can allow you to formulate thousands of outcomes in a single day. Tips:1. You start counting from 0 for this exercise if that makes any sense. Avoid the common fence post error by overcounting by 1. Other times you start counting from 1 in music is when talking about scale degrees. What is the distance from C to E? C(0) C#(1) D(2) D#(3) E(4).2. Use the chromatic scale at the top to help in counting.3. E# = F...Fb = E...B# = C...Cb = B...In otherwords, don't let strange enharmonics confuse you. Picture the black key sometimes missing between white keys on a piano in your mind if it helps. 4. Even though enharmonics like E# can seem confusing, they can actually add clarity sometimes because they cause the chord to stack perfectly in the sheet music and letter names. A# C# E#...versus...A# C# F...Sure, F is easier to understand in a part, but it actually makes the harmony harder to understand because not it looks like it isn't 3rds, even though it is.5. I included tab just to make this worksheet a little bit more interesting; however, the guitar chords that result are NOT practical. Voicings of common guitar chords are much more spread out, and often contain more duplicate letter names. Practical guitar chords is sort of a different conversation. I sort of did this intentionally to prove that perfectly stacked voicings do not work well on guitar. C E G Bb perfectly in order in harmony, sounds like it would be easy on guitar, but it is not.6. To make this more practical on guitar, I recommend building the chords yourself by simply knowing letter names well on guitar. The next time something asks for G major, don't just play a common voicing, actually find G B D randomly on the guitar neck. 7. Often the fifth of a chord is removed since it is the least important to invoking the flavor of the chord. This is especially true on guitar because we quickly run out of fingers and strings.8. The nature of the piano lends pianists to constantly seeing these distances on a linear plane. Conversely, guitar is a very murky instrument since the real distances of pitches is counterintuitive to arbitrary (usually) fret numbers! That is why many guitarists would benefit from thinking this way, instead of thinking of chords simply as shapes (which is also important for different reasons). In other words, try to build a chord on one string on guitar. It is impractical, but the half step distances required for chords will make much more sense.To Do:1. For the first time, we are able to offer theatres and interested opera-lovers vocal scores as urtext editions conceived following uniform editorial criteria: * The score corresponds to the performance materials from the Complete Edition. * For practical use in rehearsal and study, every vocal score includes rehearsal cues and bar numbers throughout. * The publisher has secured the services of renowned musicologists associated with the Richard Wagner Complete Edition who convey detailed information in critical forewords. * The forewords are given in three languages (German, English, French). * Uniform and attractive front cover designs with reproductions of paintings from the Wagner era underline the series design of the edition. TRISTAN UND ISOLDE Performance directions by the singer Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld are incorporated in the vocal score from the Complete Edition’s Tristan und Isolde volume. He entered these directions into his own copy of the Tristan part which he used at the 1865 Munich premiere. Richard Wagner was deeply impressed by his interpretation of the title role. For the first time in a vocal score of Tristan und Isolde all cuts are incorporated—with the corresponding transitional bars—which Wagner himself made, and approved, in two cases, were actually declared by him to be final. These cuts strikingly document Wagner’s struggle with the final form of the work. For the first time in a single edition all of Wagner’s own suggestions for ossias are found; ossias which evolved from performances under his own direction. Egon Voss writes about this in his foreword to the vocal score: “Such ‘pointers’, as you might say, were current practice in the 19th century which Wagner, as the example shows, did not evade. He was enough of a practical man of the theatre to know that a badly sung top note is worse than doing without it. Wagner even tolerated the transposition of lengthier passages because he was less concerned with the letter of the score than with theatrical effectiveness. [...] The present vocal score goes beyond the Complete Edition [...] in that the ossias mentioned above are indicated in the vocal part itself, in small notes. They concern principally the role of Tristan, but also those of Isolde, Brangäne and Kurwenal. They rest in part on the Tristan edition within the Complete Edition but for the greater part go back to a source which could not be consulted for the Complete Edition because it was not yet accessible. This relates to a vocal score from the estate of the composer Peter Cornelius who was engaged by Wagner as repetiteur at the Vienna rehearsals in 1861-63. That the ossia bars go back to Wagner can be taken as certain, since in some places they are notated in his own hand.†(Egon Voss, quoted from the foreword to the vocal score) The transpositions mentioned by Egon Voss—two by Hans von Bülow for the revival of the work which he conducted in Munich in 1869 and the third suggested by Wagner himself in 1861—are printed in the appendix to the vocal score. The ossias, transpositions, and cuts are available for practical use in the theatre and in rehearsal. The cuts are also incorporated into the orchestral materials for Tristan und Isolde. This is also the case with ossias which affect the orchestral parts.2013 marks Wagner’s bicentenary, making the year largely focused on his music, particularly the dramatic works. String theory, which the CERN facility hopes to verify or disprove, presumes that matter itself is the manifestation of resonant vibrations, that the world itself is a universal harmony. This post-modern notion - which Kronos embodies with every performance - itself resonates with the ancient Hindu notion of om, the absolute manifest, which is the basis of Indonesian gamelan. We will bring these two ideas of resonance together by combining Kronos with a gamelan - even a virtual one.The behavior of subatomic particles is probabilistic, group-oriented: the motion of any one particle is unpredictable and unknowable: it's what the group does that counts. This could also be a description of the Balinese gamelan, where individual virtuosity is subsumed to interlocking patterns, composite melodies, the sound of the whole. This is also the spirit of Kronos.When Robert Moog developed his synthesizer in the 1960s, he modeled its functionality on the piano and on western music in general - a single person, sitting at a keyboard. This is one reason why it was popularized by Wendy Carlos' Swtiched On Bach. Gamelan Elek Trika takes a similar approach to the very distinctive musical practices of Indonesia. Like the great gamelans of Bali and Java, Gamelan Elek Trika works as a single unit, played by a complete ensemble. The instruments are played like a gamelan - metallophones, drums, and gongs, playing interlocking patterns - but all are channeled through a central 'brain', a single processing unit which controls their sound, tuning, and timbre.
