A fantastic offer price for the full score and all parts! ... Looking for something to add a sense of oriental exoticism to your amateur orchestral/choral concert? This may be what you're looking for! This charming little suite of six dances lasts about 15½ minutes. It consists of a Pavane, Bourée, Sarabande, Allemande, Basse Danse and Galliard, which vary widely in character. As a whole the suite provides some interesting challenges for both performers and listeners. Apart from conventional strings, flute and harp (which can be either pedal or lever) you will need:- One or maybe two Arabian ouds. The parts are playable also on a fretless acoustic guitar. (Needs to be fretless because of the quarter-tones in some of the Arabic modes used.)- A cimbalom (the part can be played on a piano also, with slight modification). You might get away with using a hammered dulcimer but you'd need to make a number of compromises.- A doumbek and a djembe. These beautiful drums are a must for Middle-Eastern or African music. They're fairly easy to find, though finding somebody who can play them properly may take a bit more doing!- Finger cymbals and a gong. These are regular western instruments.- A wind-chime. Anything that produces a nice shimmering spangle of sound will probably do!- A group of singers (SATB). Nothing particularly challenging but see below.The primary oud part, the strings and the singers need to have sufficiently good intonation to pitch quarter tones. These are the exception rather than the rule, but nevertheless play an important part in the character of the music. Apart from this, the music is relatively straightforward and probably playable by any reasonably competent amateur or high school orchestra.In the spring of 2020 I wrote a set of short music tracks for a charity of which I'm a trustee. In order to protect my intellectual property rights in the music, I decided to bring it together into an attractive if not intellectually challenging little suite, hence An Omani Dance Suite. Originally the dances were all in Arabic quarter-tone temperament, but obviously quarter-tones cannot be played easily (if at all) on the flute, harp and cimbalom. So I have made some adjustments but retained the Arabic temperament wherever reasonably possible. I had thought initially of using a santur instead of a cimbalom, but the santur lacks the range and the dynamic capability to be used with a string chamber orchestra. The cimbalom doesn't need to be a concert grand model; in fact it doesn't even need to have dampers.The Omani was something of an afterthought: a musician friend of mine had worked in Oman and commented on how authentically Omani the Basse Danse sounded. Performance of my suite for guitar and orchestra by András Csáki and the Budapest Scoring Symphonic Orchestra under Péter Illényi in 2015. The suite comprises: Dreaming, Folksy Waltz, Sanctus and Benedictus, with Hosannas, and finally Distant Storm It has elements of Romantic and Renaissance music, flamenco, Latin American, a bit of Celtic square dancing, classical minuets and a general joie de vivre mixed with a little spirituality. Dreaming is a romantic getting to know you scene between guitar and orchestra, with slow harmonic progressions in the strings and melodic imitations and dialogues between guitar and woodwind and then also between guitar and harp. A simple waltz follows, in which the flutes take up new melodies and the guitar initially just provides accompaniment but joins in the conversation as the movement progresses. The Sanctus and Benedictus section reflects the rhythms of the Latin words of the mass, with the Osanna after each main part being a little faster and reminsicent of some of the lute works of Vincenzo Galilei. The harmonic ideas of the Sanctus also colour the slower parts of the last movement, Distant Storm, but the main part of this final movement is a rhythmically exciting dialogue between the various sections of the orchestra and the guitar, leading to an abrupt conclusion, possibly the first thunderclap of a distant but approaching storm, or possibly just a bit of fun. Little Suite for a Jubilee Occasion was written for the 20th anniversary of a music society. It is intended for junior players and can be performed on virtually any combination of five or more woodwind and/or brass instruments. It is based on my own experience of working with such groups.The three short movements – Prelude, Invention, Contrapunctus – are in different keys and encompass different playing styles – majestic, playful, solemn. In Prelude and Invention, a motif played in a first part is repeated in a second part, but those parts alternate, so sometimes the first part follows the second part instead.All three movements are essentially in just three parts and so in many instances different parts are actually identical, dividing only at certain places.The parts included are suitable for the instruments found in groups of learners:flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bassoonEb alto sax, Bb tenor saxBb trumpet, F/Eb horn, trombone (TC/BC), euphonium (TC/BC), tuba, Bb/Eb bassThe high flute/oboe part is optional, likewise the xylophone and drum parts. If you are not using drummers, then simply omit measures 22 and 23 and begin the Invention at measure 24.In the Contrapunctus it might be a nice effect to double Part 5 on an organ.

The five movements may be performed as a set or individually. Little Serenade has some easy meter changes. Little Waltz makes use of a counter melody and is in arch form. Little Dance uses some easy double stops, canon and imitation. Little Lullaby is in 6/8 and uses some pizzicato. Little March has several themes separated by fanfare interludes.

The fourth trumpet never quite agrees with the other players! The second movement - Carillon - was prompted by the weekly bell-ringing practice in the composer's village. Rhythmic ensemble is not always quite perfect.... The scurrying third movement - Burlesco - uses material from the 'bells' of the previous movement, but in a very different way this time. A sense of key is never really confirmed and there is a bustling race to the finish. The Proclamation recalls the style of the opening Fanfare and provides a noble conclusion to this short suite. With echoes of each other's part, the four instruments compete confidently as the movement proceeds to it's triumphant conclusion.
