I was chatting to my mom in South Africa yesterday, and she requested some new music for her upcoming birthday(preferably me singing another aria), but I woke up with this in my head early this morning and so I got to work. It reminded me a little of all the Chopin waltzes I played many moons ago, and it made me sad that he died at the young age of 39, so I decided to call it The Birthday Waltz. Chopin's music really shaped the way I hear melody, and I love his body of work. And my mom has always been my biggest fan, coach and champion, so I hope she likes this piece, and I guess Ill go and record an aria for her now!!! ps I think this piece will be a great preparation for students who are eager to learn some Chopin Waltzes. It sounds harder than it is and I think it's fun to play (and even my husband loved hearing it all day). I hope you enjoy it too.

Most of the time the melody line consists of a single note in the right hand, with an um-chug accompaniment in the left. Each waltz is in a different style, ending with the third, which is rather melancholy. I wrote these for me to play, and so they are about Grade 4 standard.

It has one foot in traditional entertainment aspects from Wind Band's history, and the other foot in modern choices in tempo, time signature changes (including two juxtaposed feels that will challenge even your best students), along with chordal changes that keep it from sounding 'dated.' I feature several low instruments, giving them the limelight at times and with three mallet instruments written into the score, your melodic percussion have plenty to do. This piece lays well in more than one part of your lconcert line-up, including as the feature piece.

Published by Sibylle Kuder (A0.1376687). Short waltz in ABA form. Each part is only twelve measures long. There is a short, four-measure, bridge after the first A section. The A sections are nearly identical, only the measure before the last is slightly different.The counting is easy as the LH keeps the beat most of the time. Note-reading could be challenging for a pianist who has not much experience with chromaticism and ledger lines. The A section is in G minor and features mostly triplets in the RH with oom-pa-pa accompaniment in the LH. Even though it feels and sounds busy and energetic, it still needs to gently sway, with some judicious give and take in the tempo.The middle section is in G major and moves the melody into the LH. The LH melody is mostly quarter notes, and the RH accompaniment is either quarter or eighth notes which makes for a much calmer feeling.This waltz would best suit a pianist who has experience with either RH passage work or LH waltz accompaniment with wide leaps, or both. Little Waltz for a Dancing Occasion is intended for junior players and can be performed on virtually any combination of five or more woodwind and/or brass instruments. It is based on my own experience of working with such groups.This waltz is perhaps a little unconventional in that it does not make use of a strong first beat – traditionally played by bass instruments – followed by weaker second and third beats. Furthermore, in this piece most of the phrases are five, seven or nine measures long, thus departing from the four- or eight-measure phrases many players will be used to. From measure 22 the melody in 3/4 time has an accompaniment that is essentially in 2/4 time; I’ve included accents here to help ensure a 2/4 feel. There’s also a rather abrupt ending which, hopefully, will take some by surprise. And everybody gets the tune at some stage, not just the usual melody instruments!The parts included are suitable for the instruments found in groups of learners:flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bassoonEb alto sax, Bb tenor saxBb trumpet, F/Eb horn, trombone (TC/BC), euphonium (TC/BC), tuba, Bb/Eb bassThe high flute/oboe part is optional. The glockenspiel is also optional and I’ve mainly included this part so that, if you have a drummer who needs something to do, he or she won’t be tempted to just play bass drum on first beat, snare on second and third beats!The tempo chosen will depend on the abilities of the players.Apart from maybe saving paper, writing two parts on one system does help players to learn to read such charts – something I feel all players should learn to do from an early age.

Think of the story behind this music as about a young lady who  just loves the waltz, and loves to sing and dance to its lilting triple time.  Her dancing partner is a dashing, ever so handsome young man, who sweeps her off her feet and takes her breath away with his charm and grace, as they float away on the wings of A Dance In Triple Time!I originally composed this piece as a little warm up ditty for my chorus, but as I worked the melody and the harmony, it grew into just a little bit more than a warm up exercise. We always enjoyed singing this little piece for our audiences. And they always enjoyed hearing it. One caveat; The lyrics go by quickly! Leads, use your best diction and pronunciation, so the story doesn't get lost. Harmony voices, keep the melody prominent, by always singing your la-las at least one dynamic notch below the melody!Choose the waltz tempo of your choice - very relaxed to very lilting in 1.  Base your choice on being able to deliver the lyrics with great clarity, especially in the faster passages. Be sure to observe the accelerandos, broadening tempos, a tempos, legatos, and staccatos. They all have much to do with delivering the style of this piece, especially the off beat la-las. Some pairs are staccato, in other pairs, the first la is legato, the second la is staccato.The metronome marks more accurately describe the accelerandos and broadenings. On the repeat at 11, a slight increase in the tempo will add urgency and intensity. Keep the melody prominent as it moves to different voices, beginning at 37.
