Everybody Deserves Somebody to Love is a musical story in which two characters, who work together, are at a joyful party, with lots of dancing and drinking. Both are in love with each other but social, family, and professional issues prevent them from getting together. However, one of the characters absorbed by the joy of the party (too much to drink, maybe) decides to insist in the relationship. The other character is hesitant and afraid to face such challenge. At the end of the song they decide to take the chance. The piece is structured in a rondó form with the following parts that I called: Introduction (I); A; B; C; I; A; D; A; C; I; A. Imagine a rock and habanera cake with Scarlatti syrup. The layers are: A: An invitation. They say phrases like: “Come to me because I need you nowâ€. B: Expression of pure desire with phrases such as: Hey! I can Ìt control myself now. B could be called A’. C: In a syncopated rhythm is argumentation. One party is trying to convince the other about assuming their relationship singing like that: “Everybody deserves somebody to love. I can help you to carry on. Just give your life a second chanceâ€. D: Is a moment of reflection. One of the characters is at greater risk and says: I´m afraid, love hurts sometimes. It won´t be so easy to start a new life now.â€.

To You for Baritone, Tenor Saxophone and piano is dedicated to the American Baritone Kurt Ollmann, who has done much for the promotion and performance of American music both in the United States and abroad.Whitman’s poem speaks of seeing a stranger and feeling love for this person. In contrast to Poe’s To Helen, which treats a similar subject of a chance meeting of a stranger that the poet loves, Whitman does not idealize his subject but rather pointedly and brutally describes how he sees this person and what feelings (both negative and positive) this contemplation provokes in the poet’s mind In order to reflect this musically, there is an alternation between more introspective and brooding sections which are then followed by more ecstatic outbursts. The piece ends with the poet watching the stranger leave, expressing what the composer felt to be acceptance and release.As in any chamber music with voice, it is important that the two instruments allow the voice to predominate, regardless of the dynamics marked in their parts. The saxophonist should try as much as possible to match colour with the voice,in order to allow the contrapuntal exchanges between the voice and the saxophone to blend evenly. When Papageno tells Sprecher that he would be happy with just some wine, Sprecher asks if he has any other wishes. Papageno says he didn't have any before, but then he thinks of something else he wants and starts singing a song about it. The song says that it feels good to eat and drink delicious things, but Papageno is lonely and wants a cute girl or a wife. Papageno plays a musical instrument called a Glockenspiel while singing. This instrument is different from the modern Glockenspiel and is a keyboard instrument that strikes metal plates. In this arrangement, all the parts take turns playing the melody so that all the performers can enjoy it.

It is a rare occasion that a composer in the 21st century would receive a commission to write a musical work of such scale: a 40-minute piece for symphony orchestra, 200-plus chorus and a ballet company. At the Bangor Public Library I found some wonderful evocative 19th century texts for the chorus about the city of Bangor and its environs: the Penobscot River, Mt. Ktaadn, the logging industry, the native American culture, etc. At times I felt overwhelmed, but most of the times I was exuberant and quite inspired by the music that came forth in the process. The premiere is less than a month away, and I am looking forward to it. Susan Jonason, Executive Director of the Bangor Symphony, has made the occasion a very public one: a free concert on a Saturday evening! I hope the audience will go home humming the tunes from the work as they walk into the crisp, cool Bangor night.Formally the work is in five movements. The first, third and fifth movements are choral, and the two in between are orchestral. In the premiere, the Robinson Ballet will dance in the orchestral movements. The first movement is about the Penobscot River from winter to spring. The melting of the ice is a harbinger of things to come: warmer weather, for instance; but it has also contributed to a lot of flooding in the city of Bangor and its surroundings.The second movement is a waltz, a grand 19th century ballroom waltz for the ladies of the rich lumber barons. They come to the ball showing off their latest hats and gowns from London, Paris and Milan.The third movement is about the woods and the people who work in them. Thoreau’s text about Mt. Ktaadn is full of awesome thoughts about how nature is beautiful, yet unkind to man. It is followed by a J.G. Whittier lyric entitled The Logger’s Boast. The original song had twenty stanzas to it. I whittled it down to five. I don’t know what the original song sounded like, so I made up my own version of a lumberjack’s drinking song.The fourth movement is a wild, drunken polka. After a long week of working in the woods the lumbermen come back to the city and spend all their earnings on booze, women and gambling. And they dance the night away …The last movement begins with a funeral march for Joe Attien, a native American who was Thoreau’s guide when he came up here in the 1900’s. The work ends with a rousing march, a centennial hymn to the city of Bangor. God bless our city Bangor, now! On this its birthday morn …NB: The two ballet movements, II. La Valse and IV. Key: C major.The Beatles classic with the Advent hymn, In Dulci Jubilo. Both texts come from dreams, and this winds up a meaningful combination. In Dulci was written in the 14th century by German monk and teacher Heinrich Suso (or Seuse), who writes in his third-person autobiography about a dream he had: Now this same angel came up to the Servant [Suso] brightly, and said that God had sent him down to him, to bring him heavenly joys amid his sufferings; adding that he must cast off all his sorrows from his mind and bear them company, and that he must also dance with them in heavenly fashion. Then they drew the Servant by the hand into the dance, and the youth began a joyous song about the infant Jesus, which runs thus: In dulci jubilo... About 650 years later, in 1968, Paul McCartney was staying out late, drinking too much, and thinking that the Beatles were probably going to break up soon. Then one night, somewhere between deep sleep and insomnia, I had the most comforting dream about my mother, who died when I was only 14. She had been a nurse, my mum, and very hardworking, because she wanted the best for us.... At night when she came home, she would cook, so we didn’t have a lot of time with each other. But she was just a very comforting presence in my life. And when she died, one of the difficulties I had, as the years went by, was that I couldn’t recall her face so easily.... So in this dream twelve years later, my mother appeared, and there was her face, completely clear, particularly her eyes, and she said to me very gently, very reassuringly: “Let it be.†It was lovely. I woke up with a great feeling. It was really like she had visited me at this very difficult point in my life and gave me this message: Be gentle, don’t fight things, just try and go with the flow and it will all work out. His mother's name was Mary, or course. He wrote the song in the next few days, and it was released on the album on the same name in 1970, a month after the Beatles split up. As for the actual texts, they're very different. In Dulci is macaronic (alternating between two languages, in this case Latin and a translation from Medieval German) and ecstatic; Let It Be is English and more subdued. In this version, we alternate between the two but keep the Let It Be structure, except for a diversion in the middle where the well-known Bach setting is adopted as kind of an interlude. The two texts and melodies are sung together in the last verse (the fourth In Dulci verse and the third Let It Be verse), where both are talking about music.

I composed this piece while I was still a student at Marcus High School and a member of the band, myself (2002-2006). This fanfare was commissioned by Amanda Drinkwater, the director of bands at the time, to be a symbol of heart and identity for the organization – to be performed by the band while marching onto the field, as well as to promote a sense of comradery and unity among all members of the band. I was lucky enough to call Amanda Drinkwater one of my earliest mentors in music, and I will always be grateful for her encouragement and teaching, and for giving me this opportunity. Towards the end of my time in high school, I had gotten very serious about composition and trumpet performance, and was looking ahead to music as my future college major and career. That timing was serendipitous for each of us. Amanda conceived of this project that year, and, knowing of my passion for composing, graciously offered me the opportunity to compose the piece. For me, I was thrilled to accept the opportunity, and it meant a lot. I cherished my experiences in the Marcus Band, and I saw this as my chance to give something back. In that spirit, even though the piece is short, I put my heart into it. This commission was also my first professional engagement as a composer, and that was tremendously exciting.
