Introduction to The Rubáiyát of Omar KhayyámThe Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is a Persian poetry collection first put together in 1460 in Shiraz.  It consists of quatrains, four-line poems, with a set of unconventional themes.  The poetry is irreligious and questions the afterlife and God's providence.  It shows keen awareness of the shortness of life and the finality of death. It advises therefore that every fleeting moment of every day should be savored, with wine, lovers and song. The combination of a serious philosophy of life and a carefree attitude has made the poetry popular for centuries.  In 1859, Edward FitzGerald brought out a loose English translation that took the world by storm.  It became the most beloved and widely known poem in the English language for decades until its popularity finally faded in the late twentieth century. Although they were attributed to the great mathematician and astronomer, Omar Khayyam (d. 1131), the poems were by many anonymous hands, and he was just a frame author, akin to Scheherezade in the Arabian Nights.- Dr. Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of MichiganAbout the CompositionTwo Scenes from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám explores and embodies two of the main themes that carry throughout the quatrains of the poem collection. In FitzGerald's translation, the quatrains follow a day to night cycle. The two movements reflect this by starting off with an abrupt wake up section and ending the piece with a nocturne.  The first movement, Wine, celebrates the camaraderie, joy and chaos that comes through the physical joy of being with friends. The clarinet, violin and piano interact in a conversational way, talking, laughing, and insulting one another in their own independent lines.The second movement is entitled Intimacy and explores the emotional joy of connecting with one another. The movement is set in a waltz style dance and draws influence from Chopin, Liszt and other romantic era composers. This is juxtaposed by youthful and energetic phrases so that the piece embodies all forms of love: young love, years of marriage and even friendship. Each movement has a sense of urgency and density which is present in the rubá'iyát as well, expressing to the reader that our time on Earth is so short and to make the most of each day.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition, and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

The second movement of Blaze's Piano Sonata in E Major No. 1, following A Look Into The Past, A Moment In The Present was primarily inspired by Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in F Minor No. 1 and Piano Sonata in C Minor No. 8 “Pathetiqueâ€. I gave it its name because I find it to be a very relaxing and dawdling piece. It reminds me of someone just lounging around and enjoying nothing but taking in the moment. The syncopated melody gives off the feeling that his thoughts are also jumbled together. He is not actively trying to achieve anything, but instead just letting anything come to him. It is supposed to contrast the first movement by being simpler and more relaxing (where the first is dominating and complex). I especially wanted a much more lyrical and monophonic (single voiced) piece to contrast with the polyphony (many voiced) and layers of the first.

Imagine a place where cultures are blended and people of all races can laugh, play, sing, dance, and even pray together.  Colores is a musical tale in which children show us how to create such a place.A child walks on to a deserted playground, looking for others.  Another child joins.  They introduce themselves and begin to talk to each other.  A third joins the conversation, then another, and another, until there is a large group of children, creating a colorful, contrapuntal cacophony of vocal chatter.  After the introductions and lively conversations, they pause to decide what to do next.  As would be expected, they decide to just play.  They run races, play chase and tag, catch and kickball, and laugh and giggle until their energy is gone.  Settling down, and wondering what to do next, one child begins singing a tune that is familiar.  …but not to all of them.  So, it’s time to teach the song to everyone.The tune is shared, bit by bit, and one by one every child learns it and joins in.  Before it’s over, their full-voiced singing creates a choral tapestry in which every child adds his or her own color to the musical palette.After a brief conversation, they add their renewed energy to the song they just learned, pick up the pace, and dance.  They twist and spin, jump and swing, making up their moves as they go along.  But, as before, their energy wanes.  This time, as they settle down, one child feels so comfortable with these new friends, he chooses to share his faith in the form of a chant — a prayer.Some join his prayer, as others add a familiar religious tune.  They pray and sing, and their separate experiences combine to produce a stirring, blended chorale.  As they finish, the day ends and they quickly reminisce about the blended experiences that are now behind them.  Before they go their separate ways, they share a moment of gratitude for the place where they can be free to be who they are, together.On a musical note, Colores combines multiple scale structures and varying types of vertical harmonies to give the piece its color palette.  Each of the five voices is set in a different mode, with different tonal centers and sets of accidentals.  The harmony combines both traditional tertian chords with secondal, quartal, and quintal structures.The colors within the music are intended to represent the racial diversity of the borderland from which the composer drew his inspiration.  It is hoped that we can learn from the example of children who talk, laugh, play, sing, dance, and pray together.  …who are grateful for the time and experiences they share.

Throughout the centuries, sundials (a flat plate that marks the time of the day by the shadow of a gnomon which is cast onto it) have been used by civilizations to tell time. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden (2009) for clarinet, bass clarinet, pipa, and erhu (score and parts) I composed this piece imagining myself in a garden of images, sonorities, and aromas that all merge in an idyllic moment in time. I have taken a line from one of T.S.Eliot’s poems in the Four Quartets, for my title, Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden. The poem, Burnt Norton, concludes with the poignant truth that humankind cannot bear very much reality. I often wonder whether my work as a composer really has any significance or meaning beyond helping my listeners temporarily escape their personal realities. In recalling Eliot’s line, What might have been and what has been/ point to one end, which is always present I am reminded that a melody, a single line of lyric pitch flow evokes memory in the mind of the listener and that rhythm and accent often draws our attention to the present moving towards the future. So, with these inherent powersof music in mind, it was my goal to create a piece of vibrant and engaging music that relentlessly draws the listener into the present moment. Eliot also alludes to a timeless merging of present and past in this poem. His line, then a cloud passed and the pool was empty brought back memories of being a child watching clouds almost unnoticeably move across the sky. I was similarly inspired to conclude Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden with music that evokes an ecstatic stillness tempered with a longing for the past. WGN

The Girl In the Green Bandanna is a contemporary woodwind quintet for flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, and bassoon. It is based upon the classical Rondo Form, with this particular pattern of the form being ABACBA. These six sections that comprise the piece all focus in some capacity on two individual themes: the first, slower theme of the A Section and the contrastingly more lively theme that follows immediately afterward in the B Section.Below is a theoretical analysis of the parts and how they each have their own unique nod, whether big or small, to these two main themes. A1 (mm. 1-9): The opening section of the piece, which introduces Theme 1.B1 (mm. 10-22): Directly following the opening, this section introduces Theme 2.A2 (mm. 23-58): After a brief interlude from the bassoon part, the main motif from Theme 1 returns, presented as motivic manipulation in the clarinet part of this section, underneath the flute melody.C (mm. 59-123): A new, more jaunty section not yet heard in the piece, though which still contains occasional traces of the main motif from Theme 2.B2 (mm. 124-144): Theme 2 in a modulated key and with a more majestic energy. Here, the two themes merge together momentarily, as Theme 1 can be heard briefly in the Clarinet part during the first eight measures of this section, much akin to A2.A3 (mm. 145-149): The outro of the piece, which is a polytonal rendering of the modulated key from B2 and the original opening key.

The Piano Trio in C minor Op.143 was published by Schott in 1826, but could have been composed much earlier for Ries's personal use in the London concert halls. It is an imposing work, whose gruff tone and serious purpose recall Beethoven's use of this key. The first movement is an impressive sonata-form movement extending to a length of almost 250 bars. It contains two strikingly contrasted themes, one aggressively assertive, the other of a more lyrical, tender character (parallels to Beethoven's thematic tendencies in sonata-form movements are once again clearly apparent). The Adagio movement, cast in the rich colours of A flat major (the tonic minor - flat submediant major key relationship recalls Beethoven once again) contains some moments of real beauty and musical insight. The piano is often centrestage, its florid lines and ornamental flourishes reminiscent of another of Ries's contemporaries, Hummel. The technique of connected second and third movements seen in this work is not new but was a trend established in the piano trio genre by Joseph Haydn in the 1780s and 90s. The oasis of calm and tranquillity created in the Adagio is shattered dramatically by the jagged arpeggio figure which launches the finale. This extremely fast movement - the metronome marking indicates that the music should be felt in two, not in four - is characterised by the tarantella topos. It is a tremendously exciting movement, whose swirling energy and frantic pace is only reined in at the final cadence. The present edition reproduces as faithfully as possible the text of the trio as transmitted in Schott's 1826 edition of the work, a copy of which is preserved in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. The metronome markings at the head of each movement derive from this source. The piano compass extends from E flat 1 to a flat 4, a range of just over six octaves. Pedal markings indicated in the source have not been included in the current edition since these are generally very instrument-dependent. Minor rhythmic inconsistences between different statements of the same theme have been retained (e.g. first movement, second subject, bb.51-52, cello and 188-89, violin), as have some differences in phrasing between successive thematic statements (cf. finale, piano bb.3-6 and violin bb.18-21). The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout, and, where missing from the print, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets where appropriate. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment, and editorial emendations with no authority from the print are placed within brackets. Dianne James.

The beginning of the play, however, presents itself childish and naïve, as a child walking in a indolent way and ended up reminding me of video game or cartoon songs and a period of childhood between 8 and 10 years. I then structured the piece to show some pleasures of childhood: walking, running, flying, playing, swimming and dancing. Most of the images selected for this movie in youtube (https://youtu.be/BTZwwt8wYb0) represent what I wanted to express through my sound choices. For those who enjoy analyzing musical structures a short summary follows: The piece begins with the exposition of a rhythmic theme in B flat minor, followed by a small melodic theme constructed through the same motif presented at the beginning of the piece, but in D flat major. The piece then moves towards a moment of transition, a bridge between B flat minor and B minor. This transition is not only modulation, it is a transformation of the rhythmic aura to a melodic (B minor) episode . This episode is presented as a song A, B, with small variations. After the melodic episode, another moment of transition begins to return to the tonic (B flat minor) for reexposition of the rhythmic theme, but with another outfit. The piece then ends with a delicious codetta full of tenderness.

On December 14, 2012, at 9:35 a.m., the entire country stood motionless, for a horrific act of terror was underway. Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 first-graders and 6 adults, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; a moment in history as one of the worst school shootings that our country has ever faced. Every single child which was murdered had a future of their own, taken away at the hands of a ruthless gunman, who in an instant, ended any chance that these 20 children had to have a happy life. Along with these children, were the 6 heroic staff members who so selflessly gave their life in order to stop this perpetrator who came to destroy the fragile object that we all call life. The title of this piece, The Sandy Hook Lullaby, is symbolic to represent the deaths and aftermath on that faithful day. This particular piece is a lullaby to represent the day that the victims lives were taken, ending with a peaceful goodbye. The song starts strong and valiant, to represent the beginning and potential of a new day. As it progresses, the song softens a bit, with clarinet lead, which represents the students learning in the classroom and the staff working as normal. A swell in volume represents the knowledge learned, as they are completely unaware of the events to follow. Halfway through, terror strikes. The percussion solo is representative of the the 5 minutes that the entire attack took place. The entire finale of the song is to represent the peaceful rest of those murdered, the final goodbye. The song ends softly, as the victims are put to rest, and because most of the victims were children, this comes in the form of a lullaby. Just as a loving and caring parent would put their child to sleep with a song, we give our final goodbyes with this Sandy Hook Lullaby. Jonathan is the Professor of Saxophone at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is an amazing artist and a technical wizard. The piece was premiered in its original version as a solo for tenor saxophone and wind ensemble. The present version for piano is not intended to be a reduction of the wind ensemble accompaniment but is a reworking of the piece as an addition to the saxophone/piano duo repertoire. The anti-heroes in film, TV, and literature who feel themselves pushed to do very bad things for very noble reasons inspired this sonata in one movement. These characters often are themselves corrupted by their efforts. One trope of scripted television anti-hero vehicles like Breaking Bad is the cold opening presented out of sequence. The main character is shown in the moment of highest tension or deepest desperation then the story backs up to explain the events that led to that moment. Making the Darkness Conscious uses the same device by starting with a mysterious, disoriented setting full of strange groans and weird echoes. The scene ends in a terrified scream and cuts directly to a happier, jolly portrayal of the solo tenor saxophone’s character. By the end of the piece, the soloist’s character is transformed into something more ruthless and tortured. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular. C.G. Jung

The album repertoire mostly chosen by Alan was from the trumpet repertoire itself Noel suggested that this wonderful late baroque organ moment by Fiocco would suite the instrument well and also make a good contrast to the album.Some years later in 1986, I managed to use the piece with Noel Rawsthorn’s pupil and now organist of the Anglican, Ian Tracy in a recital in the Lady Chapel in the Anglican. I played from the top line organ part and Ian in a true baroque style filled out the rest from a meager bass line. So I now present it in full and with a choice of trumpets for the ubiquitous trumpet and organ recital, for piccolo A, picc G, tpt in Eb and tpt in D parts included.
