Song collector Alexander Campbell wrote a setting of this comical poem about a piper and a triyodyan - which I think was what they would have called a village simpleton. An ungainly lout, at any rate! The tune is awkward and lumbering, but I have a certain affection for it - it's quite comical! The last movement of my saxophone quartet, and a fitting ending.

Pied Piper is a fantasy towards a theme, thus reversing the traditional theme and variations format. The work was composed specifically for children, in a music education context. The piece is in the manner of an improvisation on the German folk song concerned with the Pied Piper of Hamelin: Einmal zornig und Einmal leise (sometimes angrily and sometimes gently). The original folk melody is only stated shortly before the final coda. The work is highly accessible for the listener and is appropriate for more advanced oboists, including students and professional players. Pied Piper can even be used as a virtuosic encore piece.

In 2001 flute magazine Pan had an appeal from Richard Stagg for more octotonic music, and at the same time I felt there was a dearth of good story-telling music for children. My Pied Piper of Hamelin was composed for Hessle Sinfonia, who performed it twice with their principal flute, Michael Taylor as soloist and the lyricist Ann Liles narrating, under my baton. Richard Sleight was soloist in the Isle of Axholme Symphony Orchestra's later performance: two excellent players who showed off the versatility and beauty of the flute.There are characteristic themes for the children, the river, the mountain, the pied piper and the rats, variously combined.This is a shorter and simpler version for flute, viola and cello: one or two players should speak the verses, preferably one for the story and one for the Pied Piper's words.Duration: 9 minutes.

Two accompanying recordings are also available here for download: one with all three parts to assist in learning the piece (The Piper's Angel Study Recording), and one without the vocal line for class and individual practice (The Piper's Angel Practice Track). This piece is part of the Primary Studies in Vocal Chamber Music collection, the goal of which is to provide an entree into the world of collaborative music-making for the solo singer that is accessible to all levels and voice types. The arrangements are suitable for use in either a private vocal studio or group voice class. The vocal range (medium voice) is practical for all, deliberately within comfortable limits for any voice type, male or female. The piano part is specifically designed to be feasible for student or teacher accompanists, and includes chord symbols for those less adept pianists who wish to improvise or alter the accompaniment as needed. It was a flapper style, upbeat tune characteristic of the 20's with an interesting contrapuntal use of two melodies opposite each other. The show also contained Porter's first true hit song. This arrangement also has a section by the arranger with additional development of thematic material.

The sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1725 by L’Auteur & Boivin ‘Avec Privilege du Roy.1725.’ The title page described them as ‘SONATES EN TRIO pour Trois Flûtes Transversieres sans Basse Par MR BOISMORTIER. OEVRE SEPTIÈME.’ The publication consisted of a set of parts each with the title page followed by a copy of the Privilége granted by King Louis to Boismortier to print and sell his music. There are 5 movements, Gravement, Allemande Gayment, lentement, Gavotte en rondeau & Gayment. Players of Intermediate standard will enjoy playing this music. Obvious mistakes and omissions have been corrected without comment, trills have been added where there is for e.g. a sequence where only the first trill has been indicated or a similar passage has a trill in that part or another part. The more modern tr has been substituted for + and the mordant used on shorter notes retained. No dynamics were included in the original and none have been added. Players should feel free to add their own. For the arrangement some changes of register have been made to accommodate the ranges of the oboe and clarinet and additional slurs have been added (dashed lines). Players are free to retain the ‘feel’ of early eighteenth century style whilst playing modern instruments. The original publication used the, now defunct, soprano clef (with G on the bottom line of the stave) and this edition has been transcribed into the modern treble clef. In the eighteenth century it was quite usual for wind players to play several instruments. The use of the soprano clef would have made it easier to switch between flute and bassoon.

This is the third of a set of three Pièces en trio published in Paris in 1692 which have previously been attributed to Jean Baptiste Lully. The scoring indicated was ‘ Pour les Flutes, violin, & Dessus ve Viole Composées par M. Marais, Ordinaire, de la Musique de la Chambre du Roy.’ The dedication was to Mademoiselle Roland.The Suite has thirteen separate movements though the Double is a variation of the preceding Gavotte and the four Menuets would have been played without a break. In editing the Suite I have modernised the musical notation e.g. notes tied over bar/measure lines indicated by a dot are shown as tied notes of the correct value. All editings are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. No dynamic markings are indicated in the original edition and, as these are very much a matter of individual taste, I have left them to your discretion.The suite is for three equal players of intermediate standard and above. The movements are, Prelude, Sarabande, Fantaisie champetre, Gavotte en rondeau, Double, Gigue, Bransle Village, Rigaudon, 4 Menuets & Symphonie.The arrangement includes a clarinet, an instrument which was being developed from the chalumeau in the late seventeenth century by Johan Denner and his son in Nuremburg.
