Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 8, and started composing shortly thereafter.Stevens approaches her compositions as an artist. She paints musical portraits of the things that bring meaning to life: relationship to living things, emotional healing, discovering what matters most and honoring that as best we are able. Stevens' beautiful piano-based music aligns one with their own heart. Although some of her music can be described as New Age, her roots are heavily based in classical and jazz. Her study of classical composition makes her music more complex than some New Age music. Her music has been likened to the impressionistic composers such as Claude Debussy. Sydney's formal training is also reflected in her ability to compose for orchestral instruments. Her latest release, Cycles of Life, was solely recorded and produced by Sydney, programming all of the virtual instruments.Sydney has a great love for jazz. Keith Jarrett was an influence on her with his innovative and improvisational piano recordings and performances. She was particularly impressed with the freedom of style he portrayed in his performances. Bill Evans was something Sydney heard played as a young child. Where her mother was a classical pianist, her father was a jazz pianist. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. About the song and the arrangementThis is my solo piano arrangement of Let There Be Peace On Earth, one of the most powerful songs about peace ever written. I arranged it with the intermediate piano player in mind. Although is not particularly jazzy, it includes some jazz harmony and voicings. I think its beautiful melody benefits from clean voicings and an almost classical accompaniment style. Having said that, I included chord symbols so that jazz pianists can do their thing.I recommend to everyone who wants to learn it to also study the lyrics (who I didn't include with the sheet music, because it is after all a solo piano arrangement. Knowing the words will undoubtedly help with interpreting the music more adequately from an emotional point of view.About the technical aspects of this arrangementAlthough the arrangement sounds simple,  it poses several challenges. For example, it has a polyphonic element to it which requires the pianist to use the sustain pedal and make smart fingering choices. For this reason I included my suggestions for both. Please feel free to use your own.FeelThe arrangement is meant to be played very expressively. I suggest you vary the tempo and dynamics. Bringing out the melody is also very important.At last, I hope you will enjoy playing my arrangement and consider including it in your recitals. The call for peace is never a waste.

My husband and I had known Richard and Karen from our time as fellow graduate students at the Yale School of Music; Richard had studied composition and Karen piano, both very talented musicians and lovely people, so I was touched to be asked and very happy to write Peace on Earth as a gift for their daughter Katie, who was graduating from Oberlin Conservatory. Katie patiently waited out the coronavirus pandemic and on April 16, 2023 she and pianist Nomin Samdan premiered Peace on Earth on her masters degree recital at the Bard College Conservatory, where she was wrapping up her studies in the Vocal Arts Program. She wrote about Peace on Earth in her recital program notes that, “Hall responds to Williams’ catalog of constellations through slowly shifting harmonies and smooth, swung rhythms. The composer imagines the night sky as though one is dreaming it, ‘...whether it’s really up there above us or just taking place within the sleeping person’s soul.’ Through this luscious song, we are invited to daydream collectively and to come into a more unified consciousness.â€.

I never get tired of looking at the manger scene during the holidays and thinking about the way God chose to bring Himself into the world. The amazing story of Jesus’s mercy and forgiveness began for many of us in the songs of Christmas; I think Away in a Manger is the most innocent and tender of them all. Two melodies have been written for this song; I have used both tunes here, along with a touch of a famous lullaby you are certain to recognize! The double bar lines show where each Away in a Manger melody begins, and each section could be used as a tiny piece of music itself. As an entire piece it is beautiful as a Christmas-time prelude, offertory or a holiday recital piece for an advanced intermediate to advanced student. The simple lines of the melodies take turns being played by right and left hands with one instance of a hand crossing. A few fingerings are suggested in the various accompaniment patterns, and pedaling is left up to your sensitive ear. Large hands are not necessary to play this piece; a tender touch will make it glow. Allow the ending to linger...it will satisfy you and your listeners with a sense of peace.
