Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818358). ♫The Good Physician with There’s a Balm in Gilead - Soprano, Alto, and Baritone arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫Balm in Gilead (in this arrangement) is NOT the well-known negro spiritual (There is a Balm in Gilead). This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) The arranger tried to achieve a frontier-like setting for the arrangement, going so far as to set The Good Physician in the mixolydian mode. ♫ This edition includes 3 files 1) the full score 2) vocal parts 3) smaller size suitable loading onto a 10 inch tablet.

This suite for organ was commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for the 2020-2021 Student Commissioning Project. It derives its title and source material from William Walker?s 1835 hymnbook Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. Each movement is based on one tune from the collection. The work's harmonic landscape is also derived from Walker?s hymnbook, and the interval of a perfect fifth is extensively used. The end result is an exciting organ suite that brings new life to old melodies.

What Wondrous Love is This!arranged for violin and piano by Stephen R Dalrymple transcribed for flute, clarinet, trumpet, euphonium (or trombone), viola, and cello recording performed by Jim Jansen and Stephen R Dalrymple   The lyrics were first published in Lynchburg, Virginia in the 1811 camp meeting songbook A General Selection of the Newest and Most Admired Hymns and Spiritual Songs Now in Use. In most early printings, no author is listed for the text. The 1848 hymnal The Hesperian Harp attributes the text to Alexander means, a Methodist pastor from Oxford   Most sources attribute the hymn's melody to the 1701 English song The Ballad of Captain Kidd, but the melody predates the Kidd tune, however, possibly by more than a century. Camp meeting attendees during the Second Great Awakening would sing the hymns from text only hymnals to a variety of popular melodies. The text and melody were first published together in The Southern Harmony, a book of shape note hymns compiled by William Walker. Here's a lovely, lyrical tune that's ideal for use during Holy Week or as a meditative prelude, offertory, or communion selection for trombone (or euphonium, cello) and piano.Saw Ye My Savior? is an early 19th-century American folk hymn with a tune that predates it by perhaps 100 years or more. Both the text and the tune seem to have been freely adapted to the subject of the song (whether secular or sacred) and the singer, which is typical of folk songs and folk hymns handed down from one generation to the next. For example, the text of the hymn, which begins Saw ye my Savior, saw ye my Savior, saw ye my savior and my God? is similar to that of an English folk song, Saw you my father, saw you my mother, saw you my true love John?In the 1858 edition of William Walker's shape-note hymnal, The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion, the source cited for the text and tune is Baptist Harmony (1834), p. 477. However, William Hauser and Benjamin Turner's collection, The Olive Leaf (1878), refers to the tune as a Scotch air; and certainly, the Scotch snap rhythm in measures 3 and 4 of the tune lend credence to that. The website, hymnary.org, cites Saw Ye My Savior? as having been published in 167 hymnals (all prior to 1979 but one). Two similar tunes, CRUCIFIXION (Southern Harmony) and ATONEMENT are associated with the text. Because the subject of the text is Christ's crucifixion (see representative text here), Saw Ye My Savior? has often been used as a choral anthem in Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday worship services. This rather obscure Christmas carol, found in the Southern Harmony hymnal, was more than likely sung unaccompanied either in unison or 2-part harmony, and tells the Christmas story according to Scripture - using unusual rhyming schemes, which may (or may not!) help with memorization! It sits a bit high in range for altos and basses, so is probably suited more for a college-aged chorale or vocal ensemble. .

Published by Horsehair Music (A0.596378). The Flex Orchestra Series are arrangements that can flex to the instrumentation that is available in your context. This series was born out of a desire to have beginning players participate in worship and play along side more experienced players. These arrangements are written with a melody part in each instrument's clef. The melody part is the same from instrument to instrument with slight variations in register. Along with the melody part is a harmony part or ensemble part. Unlike the melody parts, each ensemble part is unique to that instrument. The piano accompaniment is the glue that holds it all together. This arrangement to be played as a solo with accompaniment, or any combination duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano accompaniment. By having one or more instruments play the melody part, and then add any other instrument on their ensemble part. The melody part is overall the easiest or simplest part. The ensemble parts can be a little more techincal. These techniques would include harder string crossings, and some position work. This scoring flexiblity allows less-experienced players of any stringed instrument to play the melody part, and the more-experienced string players to play their instrument's ensemble part. This allows all levels of string players to play together any combination. On Jordan's Stormy Banks, the American hymn tune, PROMISED LAND, dates back to the early 1800's. It is originally found in a hymnal that was used in the singing schools that were prevalent throughout the southern United States. This arrangement has a fiddle-tune like flavor and uses some open string double stops in an opening motif, hinting at its roots in the folk song tradition. The melody part is can be played in first position entirely. Your players are sure to have fun with the double-stops, finger slides, sounded glissandos and rhythmic patterns that are sure to have you tapping your toe.

Brightest and Best is an original piece based on the hymn tune STAR IN THE EAST (from The Southern Harmony), most commonly used with the text Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning. As such, the arrangement is well suited to use in the Christmas and Epiphany seasons. However, the tune's general appeal make it a great addition to worship in any season, as well as use in concert or recital settings.In addition to the main hymn melody, this piece is woven through with original counter melodies and rich harmonies. Through much of the piece, flowing, running 8th notes and rhythmic bass lines maintain motion beneath the soaring melody. The second verse slows down with a quarter note motif reminiscent of change-ringing bells, keeping an open and ethereal sound with building anticipation before the interlude melodies return in full force for the conclusion.Most of these features and ideas appear in both the secondo and primo parts in this 1-piano, 4-hands piece. The middle of the piece is an improvisation on the tune that is plaintive and contemplative. The final section is set in the classic pentatonic tradition reminding one of the strength and durability of America's pioneers. A perfect way to close out Advent.
