Instrumentation: 3222-4231-timp-2perc-hp-chorus-strings Program note:It has been a wonderful two years of thinking, learning and working on my Continental Harmony Project with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. It is a rare occasion that a composer in the 21st century would receive a commission to write a musical work of such scale: a 40-minute piece for symphony orchestra, 200-plus chorus and a ballet company. At the Bangor Public Library I found some wonderful evocative 19th century texts for the chorus about the city of Bangor and its environs: the Penobscot River, Mt. Ktaadn, the logging industry, the native American culture, etc. At times I felt overwhelmed, but most of the times I was exuberant and quite inspired by the music that came forth in the process. The premiere is less than a month away, and I am looking forward to it. Susan Jonason, Executive Director of the Bangor Symphony, has made the occasion a very public one: a free concert on a Saturday evening! I hope the audience will go home humming the tunes from the work as they walk into the crisp, cool Bangor night.Formally the work is in five movements. The first, third and fifth movements are choral, and the two in between are orchestral. In the premiere, the Robinson Ballet will dance in the orchestral movements. The first movement is about the Penobscot River from winter to spring. The melting of the ice is a harbinger of things to come: warmer weather, for instance; but it has also contributed to a lot of flooding in the city of Bangor and its surroundings.The second movement is a waltz, a grand 19th century ballroom waltz for the ladies of the rich lumber barons. They come to the ball showing off their latest hats and gowns from London, Paris and Milan.The third movement is about the woods and the people who work in them. Thoreau’s text about Mt. Ktaadn is full of awesome thoughts about how nature is beautiful, yet unkind to man. It is followed by a J.G. Whittier lyric entitled The Logger’s Boast. The original song had twenty stanzas to it. I whittled it down to five. I don’t know what the original song sounded like, so I made up my own version of a lumberjack’s drinking song.The fourth movement is a wild, drunken polka. After a long week of working in the woods the lumbermen come back to the city and spend all their earnings on booze, women and gambling. And they dance the night away …The last movement begins with a funeral march for Joe Attien, a native American who was Thoreau’s guide when he came up here in the 1900’s. The work ends with a rousing march, a centennial hymn to the city of Bangor. God bless our city Bangor, now! On this its birthday morn …NB: The two ballet movements, II. La Valse and IV. Drunken Polka, are optional.

A Walk in Nature is my first composition and follows the story of someone journeying through the woods. As the piece begins, the sun has just risen and awoken the life inside and surrounding the home. Each entrance represents the different lifeforms waking up on the beautiful day. Finally, the birds are chirping, the sky is filled with light, a breeze makes the woods feel alive, and the journey begins. As the “B†section begins the wanderer begins to look inward and think about themselves, life, and begins to feel nostalgic. This continues until suddenly, it begins to rain; and thus begins the C theme. This minor section represents the darkness the wanderer is feeling from their thoughts as well as the rain that has begun to soak their clothes. Finally, the clouds slowly begin to part and, just as the day started, the sun begins to bring light and warmth through the clouds. The journey is almost over, but not before the beauty of nature reveals itself one last time.

It was just another squirrel all along! Whiskers and the other squirrel are cautious to meet each other but they walk up to each other slowly and carefully, ready to run at any moment in case something happens. Whiskers thinks to himself about all that fear and chaos he felt earlier that was all for nothing, he is very relieved to find out that the scary creature he was so scared about was just another squirrel.Whiskers doesn’t have many other friends so he’s happy to find someone else in these woods to become friends with. The scary abandoned house that they’re in seems to fade away now that he feels comfortable with this other squirrel. What an adventure it has been so far, from finding this abandoned house to running for his life to making a new friend. I wonder what her name is?

Flute-represents a bird’s call.Trombone-carries the sound and theme of the crow throughout the piece.Triangle-is the soft sound of noises in the woods, that are so low that they are often not heard.Maracas-represents the rattlesnake’s rattle when he is disturbed and angry.Wood Blocks-represent the sound of the woodpecker.Bass Guitar-is the background of the piece and sometimes the edgy feeling one gets when walking in (what they thought) was an empty forest.Piano-is the crow’s call.Tenor Voice-is meant to represent a cry in the forest but is only included twice in the piece.Cello-Is also the background music but gives one the feeling of coldness creeping upon them. It’s the crow’s call being echoed.The Piano can play with the crow’s call starting out loud then fading or diminishing as it also echoes in the distance. Not to be played too fast.The Flute can get louder as it repeats its lines.The Triangle is soft but not too soft. It must be able to be heard against the other instruments.The Cello may use as much vibrato or screech sounds as it wants with the use of the bow.The Tenor may use as much legato as they want.

The bond between John Muir and Mrs. Carr (whom he addresses formally) is one of great kinship- a blending of the souls, a “spiritual romance.†As he marvels at the beauty of the wilderness, he writes ardently, “I wish that you could see this...†When he learns that Mrs. Carr, a botanist (whose plants suffer from the frost), dislikes ice, he chides her, and creates a “mock argument†over the value of glacial ice.The songs begin with an ascent into the mountains. They close with the return to the coast, to the magnificent Sequoia trees, where John Muir camps for the night, in the company of a squirrel. Charmingly, he writes “therefore, my Carr, goodnight.â€.

Then, as lockdowns swept the nation, it became a much bigger project. The seven movements of this piece depict various aspects of a weekend with the family: breakfast, a party, a fire, a walk in the woods. The piece follows the structure of a day stretched over a weekend. Perhaps one afternoon there will be a party, but the next day a walk in the woods? In Weekend, Ricucci-Hill also shows their playful side in including various musical quotations from Bach to drinking songs to Pergolesi. In all, it's a love letter to a mood, a state of being, only felt when there are no responsibilities but to enjoy your time home.

On a Forest Path is the final movement of the composer's larger work, A Timbered Choir, settings of poems by Wendell Berry. It depicts various scenes that the poet encounters on his walks through the woods, and his reflections upon them. The piano takes on the role of the poet. The text consists of nine brief poems, composed at different times; several of them are only single line in length. The choral episodes are very approachable, with only a few moments of divisi, primarily for the sopranos.
