Koundourakis in an attempt to find positions playable on all 4 strings of the violin to be hit with a single bow stroke. It can be useful for the violin player to memorise some of these positions to play chords as well as arpeggios. This short piece is also suitable to be performed live to make an impression as it combines technique with melody. Published by ANTONIOS KOUNDOURAKIS (A0.991621). Spectral Apparitions is a contemporary piece written on specifications given to Antonios by his tutor, spectral composer Spyros Mazis. Three themes A, B and C were to be developped in specific durations and based on specific subsets of notes of the harmonic spectrum, (also known as the overtone series). Antonios tries to explore different harmonic colours and themes under these restrictions , while trying to conceal the deeper tonal nature of this set of sounds, avoiding tonal music cliches such as specific chord relations, disconsonance resolution and commonplace melodic patterns. This is a short piece that has a lot of character and flair, written for two of Antonis' favourite solo instruments, the violin and the flute when he was still a composition student. In this piece the violin plays a fast solo intro and then proceeds to accompany the flute, and gradually the two instuments play many interwoven melodies leading to a very intense finale. The writting is baroque-like without phrasing or dynamic markings, leaving the interpretation entirely to the two players and their personalities. This piece was written by Antonis to explore the timbre of the Flute and to utilise the relatively high register of the flute for harmony and counterpoint. There are many compositional techniques epmloyed such as immitation, use of the modes and chromatic alteration, but the overall style of the piece is that of a choral, intended to be close to the serene style of Palestrina, or Josquin Des Prez. This piece is to be played as if singing and the coordination of the 3 performers will be one of the challenges but also an interesting part of playing this piece. It could be played by a tutor and 2 pupils alternating the parts for extra practice benefits. If the students are experienced solo performers it could be also perfrormed prima vista to practice counting the pauses and re-entrances of the voices while the other players continue to play. In this piece Antonis explores the polyphonic and the homophonic style of composition with the added benefit and freedom of having 2 extra hands on the keyboard. Therefore there is a wide range being used simultaneously and in many cases the piece requires good coordination of the performers while in other cases independence of dynamics and phrasing. There is an extended period of stretto immitations, normally found in the style of the Fugue, and a 7 voice homophonic section resembling choral music. The different styles are juxtaposed in the form of a conversation, hence the title of the piece.This piece is ideal for live performance but can also be played by teacher and student while interchanging the parts they play for added benefit of learing coordination and understanding the challenges of the other performer when playing together. It is providing an opportunity for the violin student and the violin performer to play music that is not written in the Western Harmony style, the empty intervals of fifths and fourths that prevail in the pentatonic style create a strange impression to the western ear, but this piece is also ment to explore their soothing qualities as well and to evoke images of the Chinese countryside, taking the player and the listener along on a journey!
