A reflective setting for high voice and piano of the lovely anonymous text often called the Prayer of Saint Francis. There is, however, no evidence that St. Francis of Assisi wrote it. Its first appearance was in a spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell), published in Paris in 1912. The prayer became well known and associated with the saint in the years following; the first printed English version appeared in a Quaker magazine in 1927. In this setting I took the liberty of adding two words (to ourselves) to the prayer, towards the end: ... for it is in dying to ourselves that we are born to eternal life. They fit quite naturally into the flow of the music and, I believe, are certainly in keeping with the teachings of St. Francis. For more information about John's work visit www.johnnewellmusic.com.

This is a setting for unaccompanied soprano of selected passages from Revelations of Divine Love, by the 14th-15th century mystic Julian of Norwich. Her work is widely acknowledged to be one of the great Christian spiritual classics. It is also the earliest surviving book in middle English written by a woman. The short text was written soon after Julian recovered from a severe illness and describes sixteen visions that she had received: revelations of Christ's suffering and God's love. The second version (long text) was written perhaps twenty years later; it is a greatly expanded volume that includes her meditations on what she had been shown. This work begins with a spoken passage, the very first words of her work, directly followed by a soliloquy that includes some of Julian's best known quotations (e.g. all shall be well). I chose to adapt Julian's language into modern English, while remaining as faithful as possible to the style and intent of her original text. On a Forest Path is the final movement of the composer's larger work, A Timbered Choir, settings of poems by Wendell Berry. It depicts various scenes that the poet encounters on his walks through the woods, and his reflections upon them. The piano takes on the role of the poet. The text consists of nine brief poems, composed at different times; several of them are only single line in length. The choral episodes are very approachable, with only a few moments of divisi, primarily for the sopranos.
