I have set it here in an arrangement for Woodwind Quintet which, I think, captures the essence of the original and preserves the unique sound of Beethoven. The Divertimento, originally for an orchestra (flute, oboe, bassoon, 4 horns and strings) was completed in June 1772 in Salzburg. It was probably written for an outdoor performance and Mozart certainly made full use of the opportunity to display his remarkable talents both to his prospective patrons and his talented fellow musicians who would have performed this extensive six movement piece.There are six movements, Allegro, a substantial sonata form piece; Adagio, a sophisticated piece written for strings only; a gem of a Menuetto with three trios; Allegretto; a Menuetto with 2 trios and a final Adagio - Allegro molto - Allegro assai forms the grand finale. The scale and sophistication of this piece is far beyond that of the early symphonies which Mozart composed around the same time.The arrangement is suitable for advanced and advanced intermediate players.In editing and arranging the Divertimento for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn it has been necessary to add phrase marks (shown in dashed lines) and extra staccato dots - not indicated. The lack of dynamic markings especially in the latter movements has been remedied in parentheses ( ). Some octave transpositions both up and down have been necessary and the glory of the four horn sections of the original have been re-scored as sympathetically as I am able.I do hope that quintet players will enjoy this arrangement of a very remarkable piece.

This Adagio, originally written for 2 clarinets and 3 basset horns, has been arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. The original was composed between 1783 and 1784 but was not published until the mid nineteenth century. Meanwhile the basset horn has been replaced by the clarinet and is now played only by a few specialist early music performers thus making performances of the original piece a rare novelty. I hope that this arrangement will enable more performers and their audiences to enjoy this delightful quintet.Players of good intermediate standard and above will enjoy tackling this piece.

Known as the Sunrise because the rising opening theme of the first movement seems to depict the first appearance of the sun at dawn. Whether Haydn intended it or not, this movement has caught the imagination of many listeners as some of the earliest programme music (rather in the manner of Beethoven's Moonlight sonata for piano a few years later). The Adagio, Menuetto & Trio, and Finale follow a more traditional pattern but, as ever, Haydn's ingenuity produces small innovations such as the triplet semi quavers/ sixteenth notes which become sextuplets in the Adagio, the unusual contrasting Trio and the acceleration of the final section of the Finale.Players of Advanced intermediate standard and above will enjoy the challenge of this delightful Piece.

Arranged wind quintetNatural Horn in D (Alt hn in F)Clarinet in AThe Six Viennese Sonatinas were not originally composed by Mozart for the piano. They are a contemporary arrangement of movements from the Five Wind Divertimentos for 3 basset horns, K. 439b which Mozart wrote in 1783.The Divertimentos are notable for their conciseness of form and their melodic richness. Each divertimento has 5 mvts.They therefore make an excellent introduction to Mozart's piano music, even though they are not completely typical of Mozart's piano writing. We do not know for certain who made the arrangement, but Alexander Weinmann has shown that it was probably Ferdinand Kauer. The order of movements is not the same as in the original; moreover, some of the Trios have been exchanged and recapitulations have been shortened in some instances.Thry are in varying keys, unlike the original divertimenti, so my arrangements reflect thus.This is my arrangement for wind quintet of Sonatina No.3 in D major.The original 3 parts have been reallocated around the quintet, with some octave and harmony additions.I have added an original natural horn part for a more authentic Mozart sound.There are 3 movements: Adagio Menuetto and trio RondoÂ
