Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802677). Born in Venice, Marcello was the son of a senator. As such, he enjoyed a comfortable life that gave him the scope to pursue his interest in music. He was a contemporary of Tomaso Albinoni. He held concerts in his hometown and also composed and published several sets of concertos, including six concertos under the title of La Cetra (The Lyre), as well as cantatas, arias, canzonets, and violin sonatas. Marcello, being a slightly older contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi, often composed under the pseudonym Eterio Stinfalico, his name as a member of the celebrated Arcadian Academy (Pontificia Accademia degli Arcadi). He died in Padua in 1747.Alessandro's brother was the more well-known Benedetto Marcello, also a composer.Although most of his works are infrequently performed today, Marcello is regarded as a very competent composer. His La Cetra concertos are unusual for their wind solo parts, concision and use of counterpoint within a broadly Vivaldian style, according to Grove, placing them as a last outpost of the classic Venetian Baroque concerto.[citation needed]The Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor op. 1, S D935, is an early 18th-century concerto for oboe, strings and continuo. Perhaps his best-known work. Its worth was affirmed by Johann Sebastian Bach who transcribed it for harpsichord (BWV 974). A number of editions have been published, including an edition in C minor because the baroque oboe played a whole tone lower than the modern oboe.Here is a take on brass instruments, with a basic or an advanced version for the euphonium soloist. The first one, Kindertodtenlieder for soprano and piano, I started on April 26 and it was completed on May 13th. While exercising at home, I was watching on YouTube Debussy’s Préludes Book 1 and 2, and the idea came to me that I should try my hand at writing something that is impressionistic. Why not? So I started my own set of preludes using the Debussy as my model. Each movement will take two or three notes from the original Debussy version and then I would divert and go in a complete different direction, following my gut instinct. I was so fascinated by the article that I went and purchased a book of her poems and writings. Within it I found a series of poems under the subtile of Délectations Moroses that were truly fantastic. A year ago I wrote a work for soprano and string quartet titled Gaspard de la Nuit on a set of poems by Aloysius Bertrand. Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit is for solo piano, a set of tone poems inspired by the poems of the same A. Bertrand. I enjoyed my Gaspard so much that I wanted to write another work for soprano and string quartet, this time using these fascinating poems by Claude Cahun.The work is in seven movements.1. I saw her on two occasions performing in Jordan Hall: once as the soloist in a Shostakovich Cello Concerto in Jordan Hall with Hugh Wolff and the NEC Philharmonic and then in an Honors String Quartet concert with Nico in Jordan Hall. Both concerts were in the spring of 2019, and they were fantastic. I was so impressed with her and her quartet that I wrote a string quartet for them that summer, NICO. They recorded it for me @ NEC in the fall and I love the recording. The next thing I did was to write a violin sonata for Minami Yoshida, the first violinist of Nico. It is called Mi-la-mi, after her name. Then I wrote this work for Claire, Kim’s American name. When I asked her what was the meaning of 803 in her email address, she said that is the street number of her apartment in Korea. So, that is how the title Trio 803 came about. Trio 803 (2020) is in five movements. 1. Adagio, Andante moderato 2. Adagio 3. Allegro con moto, TRIO 4. Adagio 5. Vivace, TRIO Enjoy!

The first of six sonatas for four equal players published ‘avec Privilege du Roi’ in Paris in 1731. They were published as a set of parts for three transverse flutes or violins or other instruments ‘avec la Basse’. There are four movements, all in G minor, Adagio, Presto, Adagio & Allegro. The only dynamic marking is the ‘Piano’ marked at the end of the last movement. The ornaments - trills, mordants & grace notes - are all carefully included and further decoration of the parts was not expected in French music of this period unlike in Italian music. However, more experienced players should feel free to add a little more decoration at the final cadences of the slow movements. None of the movements have repeated sections and it is clear from the flow of the music that this is not an omission. Missing slurs have been added (dashed lines) along with a few phrasing suggestions. The arrangement includes a clarinet which would not have been available until over 30 years after publication but this arrangement is most likely to be played on modern instruments so it gives a modern woodwind quartet the opportunity to play music of this period in the appropriate style. Players of intermediate ability will enjoy this piece.

No dynamics are indicated on the original manuscript and, tempting though it was, I have refrained from adding my own. The musical interest is shared equally between the four parts and throughout the whole piece no section is marked to be repeated. A short improvised cadenza by one of the players would have been added in the final bar/measure of the first movement (marked “Adagioâ€). I hope that many players from intermediate to professional standard will enjoy this delightful sonata.

This was written in the summer of 2000 for the Lochrian Ensemble who were beginning to plan the recording of the complete string quartets. In the context of the other string quartets, here there is a reversion to the classical form, thus giving a balance between the classical quartets nos. 1, 2 and 6 and the kaleidoscopic quartets nos. 3, 4 and 5. It is in the conventional four movements:- 1. Allegro - This movement is in single subject sonata form using one figure. There is much use of quasimodal writing, especially using the Lochrian and Superlochrian modes, based both on E and C and the Mixolydian mode on E, giving a sort of tonality in which the constructional remainder notes of the serial row can be used sparingly. The pull towards a tonality of F is therefore established quickly. Each section is rounded off by the metamorphosis of the figure into a sentimental tune, but contrary to expectation, it evolves in the coda into something completely different - the opening of Beethoven's F minor string quartet Op. 95. 2. Scherzo - Wobblefunk and Tango After the last movement's ending has dispelled any seriousness, the stage is set for an outrageous scherzo. After the tango, the wobblefunk section is repeated bar by bar in reverse. Why not? It doesn't make any sense the right way round! Historical note: the term wobblefunk was invented by the composer's son Edmund to describe a type of subdued electronic crossover style music which he had written. In keeping with the family sense of humour, the thought of incorporating such a movement into a serious string quartet appealed to both parties. 3. Adagio - This movement is tonal and melodic, but introduced by a discordant motif which re-appears as if to remind the listener of their own mortality. The movement progresses through the cycle of fifths and then dissolves into a sinister coda related to the notes of the discord. 4. Allegro - This movement can be summed up as accepting life's problems but getting on with enjoying the good things as well - in the spirit of the last movement of Beethoven's string quartet Op.135. Must it be? It must be! Even if it includes a textural fugue! The ending, however, is decidedly not as clear-cut as Beethoven's ....... I received an email from Joel Quarrington in 2011 with a request to buy a score and a set of parts to Hylidae … The Tree Frogs (1991) for violin, double bass and piano. He said he would like to perform the work at the next International Society of Bassists convention in Rochester, New York. I told him That is great. But it’s such an old work. Why don’t I write something new for you? He said, How much would a commission cost? I said, Let me write the piece first and if you like it, we can talk about a fee then. I began work on Toccata for Double Bass and Piano in late August and completed it on October 15. I sent Joel the music as a PDF and MIDI file via email. He wrote back, The piece looks really terrific and I have enjoyed listening to it as well, thanks for the midi file. I couldn’t be happier! Toccata is in three movements, fast-slow-fast, with internal ABA ternary forms in the first and last movements - also fast-slow-fast. Moderato … Trio … A tempo. Adagio. Allegro … Trio … Reprise! The first movement begins with a driving dotted-note motif in the double bass accompanied by an insistent sixteenth-note bass-line in the piano left hand and a soaring quarter-note melody in the piano right hand. A Trio follows which features a lyric melody in the double bass … molto cantabile! The double bass returns this time stealing the sixteenth-note bass-line motif from the piano left hand. The double bass pushes the music forward relentlessly and ferociously … holding no prisoners! To add counterpoint to this madness, the piano comes back with the quarter-note melody but in octaves this time. The left hand joins the melee occasionally to push the music forward until it reaches its climax at the conclusion. The second movement, Adagio, is a slow waltz. The mournful tune is delivered by the double bass at first, then it’s passed on to the piano, and it goes back and forth between the two. The third movement is a 6/8 romp, very syncopated and jazzy. The music goes back and forth between the double bass and piano, not unlike when the musicians in a jazz combo trade four’s among each other. An adagio Trio follows. The tune is in the double bass: long descending lines over a languid piano accompaniment. To complete the ABA format, the music from the beginning of this movement returns as a reprise. ENJOY!!! Commissioned by Joel Quarrington for a premiere performance at the 2013 International Society of Bassists Convention at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869305). Program notes. I met Lila Brown a year ago when she and members of the Boston Conservatory faculty performed my Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) at Seully Hall. Lila told me she had a summer festival in Salem, NY, and wondered if I would like to write a piece for her. I said sure. Just as in Hollywood, you never say no. At first Lila asked me if I would like to write a companion piece for Anton Webern’s Saxophone Quartet. I said sure!!! One thing led another and somehow I ended up agreeing to write a piano quintet for her. In the meanwhile Lila contacted Delores Stevens, artistic director of the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Festival, and asked her if she would also premiere the work at her festival. Delores did a little research on me and my music online and she said yes. So, here we are. Siamo d’accordo. I wrote my first piano quintet in 1988 for the Apple Hill Chamber Players. That was not the usual quintet of a piano and string quartet. The Schubert Trout quintet was my model: piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. I titled that work, Piano Quintet … apple strudel (1988). At that time I was a huge fan of the Entenmann’s Apple Strudel. I imagined the piano being encased/surrounded by the four string instruments. My first real piano quintet was written for the Formosa Quartet and pianist Tammy Lum. They premiered the work at Nyack College during the spring of 1988. My current piano quintet (no. 2) is titled Pq2 … (2014). It is a work in five movements. I. Moderato … Trio II. Adagio … III. Tsiaj 1 … Allegro IV. Tsiaj 2 … Prestissimo! V. Adagio What’s tsiaj? I got this from Charles E. Ives. The title of the middle movement of his Piano Trio is TSIAJ. It’s an acronym of This Scherzo is a joke. Enjoy!

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869307). Program notes. I met Lila Brown a year ago when she and members of the Boston Conservatory faculty performed my Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) at Seully Hall. Lila told me she had a summer festival in Salem, NY, and wondered if I would like to write a piece for her. I said sure. Just as in Hollywood, you never say no. At first Lila asked me if I would like to write a companion piece for Anton Webern’s Saxophone Quartet. I said sure!!! One thing led another and somehow I ended up agreeing to write a piano quintet for her. In the meanwhile Lila contacted Delores Stevens, artistic director of the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Festival, and asked her if she would also premiere the work at her festival. Delores did a little research on me and my music online and she said yes. So, here we are. Siamo d’accordo. I wrote my first piano quintet in 1988 for the Apple Hill Chamber Players. That was not the usual quintet of a piano and string quartet. The Schubert Trout quintet was my model: piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. I titled that work, Piano Quintet … apple strudel (1988). At that time I was a huge fan of the Entenmann’s Apple Strudel. I imagined the piano being encased/surrounded by the four string instruments. My first real piano quintet was written for the Formosa Quartet and pianist Tammy Lum. They premiered the work at Nyack College during the spring of 1988. My current piano quintet (no. 2) is titled Pq2 … (2014). It is a work in five movements. I. Moderato … Trio II. Adagio … III. Tsiaj 1 … Allegro IV. Tsiaj 2 … Prestissimo! V. Adagio What’s tsiaj? I got this from Charles E. Ives. The title of the middle movement of his Piano Trio is TSIAJ. It’s an acronym of This Scherzo is a joke. Enjoy!
