The Light is a work to commemorate the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020. It started as a transcription of a solo work in Adam Grim's Quarantine Jams series on Youtube, and worked its way onto the computer for a full ensemble. Though slightly different after being reworked, the soloistic nature still shines through from the tenor pans. The piece is sort of a soca ballad, with elements of each being major elements in the soul of the work. The rhythms in the lead part imitate the looseness of a soloist while still maintaining the ensemble atmosphere. Quite a relaxing but moving piece to program! There's a little bit of both worlds in this piece: The Light (at the end of the tunnel).

THE POWER is a vibraphone solo built on serialism. It was a goal of mine to pay tribute to serialism, which is an important part to music history, in my own work. This is my only serialist style piece, and it is for a solo vibraphone player. Honestly, it is not my favorite piece I've written, but the content and need is still there. To get a full view of music history, one must look into the eyes of serialism and atonality. I even show my rows, inversions, (basically the full analysis) so it is beneficial for the student learning the piece. Theory is not learned in a bubble!

The Devil's Rag is a fun little xylophone rag based on some of the famous Green brothers' rags that really made xylophone literature catch on. This is more advanced and requires some quick hands, but is really entertaining. It is mostly in C minor, but plays in C major as well. It is meant to depict the xylophone player trying to entertain the devil while keeping his (or her) own sanity. The player is the jester of the underground, making some interesting music and harmony while keeping rhythmic ideas quick and steady. Truly a joy to play. .

The marimba piece All Good Things Start With a Dream comes from seeing the sunrise and sunset across many places in the United States during Ohio Northern’s National Singers Tour of 2016. As I was sitting in the back of our host’s car, my friend Shawn was talking to our gracious host about his aspirations of becoming a teacher even though he was starting later in life. During the conversation, we were driving across the prairie to the home we would be staying in. As our host said, Follow your dreams, and your life will never be boring Shawn replied, Oh definitely. I believe that all good things start with a dream. That is the inspiration for this piece. Sunrise, inspiration, and a dream.

The Rain is a vibraphone solo with piano accompaniment that takes the idea of learning vibraphone with popular music to the next level. The piece is more difficult and has a harder piano part that is more involved and takes melody and harmony that gets brought to the vibraphone player and is taken between the two to create a fluid environment of sound. The title comes from my stay in Ghana, West Africa. There was a rain storm moving in, and it was quite heavy. This piece imitates this storm in the fact that you never really hear the first or last rain drop. You just hear the sound of the storm, not each individual drop.

Five four-mallet solos from my early work as a composer. They each depict an aspect or event of the campus of Ohio Northern University that happened as a freshman there. Most of these ideas were written when I was in high school, but they got some additional work as I went through my freshman year. These are not my best work, but they are good teaching tools that I have used a couple of times for short lessons on certain techniques for four-mallet marimba playing. Sorry. There are no sound files as of now. The sound files were corrupted somewhere between the three computers they've been on over the past 6 years.

This piece is inspired by Terry Riley's In C. Repetitions is a solo for found objects and The Repeater Orchestra, a free program online that mimics live sounds in real time, and plays them back in a stereo/spacial environment. It has non-standard notation in a way, with single bits written on a staff arranged in an order to play them. The player is given freedom to repeat things as many times as they want, making the piece possible to play in under 2 minutes, to well into the dozens. In my interpretation (shown in the YouTube video), it takes around 11 minutes. This piece is about making a soundscape of repeated patterns, and overlapping and combining them to create one conglomerate. Instruments include: planks of wood, a bucket of water, ceramic tiles, a glass bottle with marbles in it, a can, and a separate glass bottle for hitting. Implements include: a 2 paintbrush, a ring, rubber xylophone mallets, and oak dowel rods with Moleskin wrapped on one tip. Note, I apologize for the feedback near the first third of the recording, I had to adjust the settings, and did not hear the feedback as hard as the computer did!

Start Over Soca is a soca that features the quick hands of the lead players. Many notes are repeated to create a falling or rising effect. The moving bass line will surely sound solid and the cellos and double seconds will have a fun time with the short features they get in the transition sections of the piece. In the middle, there is a false ending, which starts the beginning over again and plays a modified finale (Hence the Start Over Soca).

Stardust Inferno is a soca written for a steel band with the following instrumentation: Lead (Low C), Double Tenor, Double Seconds, Cello, Bass, and Drum Set. The motives found in this were written on a lead pan first, and then added variations and a solo section. The bass voices have a time to shine with their own melody, the double tenor and double seconds add harmony, and the drum set has group hits written in, rather than having a repeated pattern with slash notation on top. This was a fun piece to write, and is one of my favorites in my works for pan!

The Devil's Rag is a fun little xylophone rag based on some of the famous Green brothers' rags that really made xylophone literature catch on. This is more advanced and requires some quick hands, but is really entertaining to play and listen to. It is mostly in C minor, but plays in C major as well to depict the xylophone player trying to entertain the devil while keeping their own sanity. The player is the jester of the underground, making some interesting music and harmony while keeping rhythmic ideas quick and steady. Truly a joy to play. Sail was an impactful electronic rock tune to define an era of mental health issues and struggle in young people of the early 2010's. The song goes through the signs of depression and stress, and connected with the listeners in a way that electronic rock had not done before. This simple arrangement was one of my first for the steel band, (as the copyright shows). Edited in 2020 to be better, but the form and harmony stayed the same, which is original to the song. Very simple lower pan parts, nearly all of the work is on the tenor parts. This would be great for a young band!

The Duel for 2 Marching Percussionists was written in 2015 and premiered at Ohio Northern University. It features two players, each with a number of marching percussion (drumline) instruments in front of them. Both players use a snare drum and mounted cymbal while one player plays 5 tonal bass drums and the other plays the tenors (for 5 drums). It is for advanced high school or college level players, and is very entertaining to watch. It includes stick tricks and moves that are neat to see and do. All the tricks are fairly well known, so you could easily see them on YouTube. If not, then contact me directly and I would be happy to explain!

This piece is a diaspora-music inspired piece with a combination of high life (from Ghana) and soca (from Trinidad and Tobago). Written as an encore for the Ohio Northern University West African Drumming and Dancing Ensemble for their final performance with the Ghana Dance Ensemble's Ben Ayettey. Written and performed in 2016 for marimba, lead (tenor) pan, cello pans, electric guitar (finger picking style), bass guitar (tab included), and drum set. Quite a fun piece to play, and it will definitely get your audience on their feet!

Night Visions was inspired by the night sky of Ada, Ohio. With very little light pollution, a step into the cool night atmosphere reveals the huge open sky. The piece depicts night falling, and as you step outside and watch the sky, you see the colorful sunset fade away and twinkling stars start to pop up from the darkness. They appear one-by-one, and as more and more collect in the sky they turn from several singularities into constellations, becoming the night visions formed in the cosmos.
