The piece draws inspiration from traditional drumming styles such as Samba and West African Djembe drumming. It also pays homage to great percussion composers, John Parker and Tania Savage, who have created drumming pieces that are the staple of high school percussion music in Brisbane, Australia.As always, the aim is that the ensemble has fun and enjoys the groove. Coming from a long background of Latin and African drumming styles, the piece was written with heavy emphasis on feeling the rhythm and hearing all the parts lock in.

In my search for great pieces, some were too hard, others too easy. So, I decided to write my own.The piece also draws inspiration from funk and Taiko drumming. It also pays homage to the great percussion composer Kevin Tuck and his piece Summon the Spirits, who has created drumming pieces that are the staple of percussion music all around the world.As always, the aim is that the ensemble has fun and enjoys the groove. Coming from a long background of Latin and African drumming styles, my compositions place a heavy emphasis on feeling the rhythm and hearing all the parts lock in, rather than being accurate.

Notes about the Music: In the spring of 2012, I was in Minnesota attending some performances, and had the fortunate opportunity of catching up with Matthew George, conductor of the Grand Symphonic Winds. Matt had given the world premiere performance of my Concerto for Brass Quintet (Dodecafecta), and has always had a major presence in the formation of new works for winds, so I was very delighted when he brought up the idea of a new work for his group. The Grand Symphonic Winds, in honor of their 25th anniversary, were looking to celebrate the influx of many international cultures which had become a significant part of the landscape in Minnesota. This immediately called out to me in musical terms, namely in the forms of rhythms and spirituality (hence the title!) The piece opens and closes with heroic and beautiful music, signifying (to me) what most cultures seem to all be saying, but in different languages: we all just want peace, harmony and love. The entire middle section is very rhythmic, using many percussion instruments found in different cultures, also represented in Minnesota: Latin America (claves, bongos), Africa (Djembe) and if possible, Southeast Asia (Dholak). And just for fun, I even spelled out Minnesota in Morse code, but this was merely for my own enjoyment! I wish to thank Matt George, for all he has done for the field of music in Wind Ensembles, and specifically to him and the Grand Symphonic Winds for entrusting to me the responsibility of composing this new work, which I truly hope finds its home in the literature. Â This suite combined with the others can also be performed as a contemporary dance piece following the story of the short story (which is in the public domain) written by Bram Stroker as a prelude to Dracula entitled Dracula's Curse. Â Instrumentation for each portion can range from Orchestral Bass Drum, Snare Drum, and Marimba Parts to drum-set to Boom Whackers. Â Note: Most of the Marimba parts and some of the Vibeâ??s parts are written for Grand Marimba, these could also be played on a piano if need be. Â Same with the Vibes. Â Each mallet part could also be split so that 2-3 people play it instead of a more advanced player playing with 4 mallets. Â This would be the same for the Boom Whacker sections as well.
