Francis Ball Is a composer, violinist, and guitarist who has performed in multiple bands, in collaborations, in orchestras, and solo projects. He has recorded and released ten studio albums with The Unwieldies and The Psyatics. His classical, jazz, romantic, and punk musical influences can be heard in all his contemporary compositions. J. Francis Ball was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and currently lives and performs in Las Vegas. His Words This collaboration began with a powerful name. I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. John took this title and created a brilliant new musical composition. After listening to it, I was influenced to create spoken- word pieces that match the emotion of the music while also hearkening back to the original short story. The piece you’ll hear contains poetry influenced by original music inspired by a short story based on a collection written in 1895. Time is a flat circle. This is how art moves and breathes, and I’m truly honored to take part. MMY.

Performance Notes: Ornamentation is to be performed in a free manner, except when otherwise stated in the score. Program Notes: Scherzo and Trio, Nightmares in Dreamland, for Solo Violin that follows the Classical period form of a Minuet and Trio. It has the Romantic period spirit of a Scherzo and Trio, hence the title. It has the Romantic period ideal, in it being programmatic, hence the subtitle. And, it has a melodic as well as implied harmonic language that is a fusion of Classical and Jazz of the 20th and 21st centuries. The work tells a definitive tale, despite being in a strict form. It answers the question of what dreamland would sound like for a person when infected with nightmares. Be prepared to toss and turn, as we enter the human mind after it has had a long and hard morning, afternoon, and evening.

A Piano Trio, written for the Leeds University Union Music Society Winter Concert Series. Performed by the Hughes Trio featuring Christopher Hughes (Piano), Amy Howe (Violin), and Nikki Kemp (Cello) Programme Notes: This is a rather melodramatic piece that follows the Five Stages of Grief. I first sketched the piece for string quartet after an absolutely horrific interview at the Royal Northern College of Music. Feeling disheartened and dejected, I got home and messily scribbled on some manuscript paper An Elegy for Hopes and Dreams, and started writing this extremely over-dramatic and self-indulgent piece. I had abandoned this piece for an entire year before reviving it and writing the whole piece in just over a week and a half, now reimagined for Piano Trio. The piece starts with an atonal representation of grief before quickly moving into an upbeat Denial section which features a sort of fragile and manic sense of repression as a theme that initially sounds upbeat quickly unravels with whole-tone scales and chromatic movement. A representation of Anger is then seen with the whole trio playing the same melody with a jarring Bb in the harmony. The denial and anger sections repeat and regress before abruptly moving to a Bargaining section in which the original theme, ominously played in the lower piano and cello registers, is juxtaposed with a conjunct, major variation of the same theme in the violin. The Depression section takes the form of a cello solo as I find it to be one of the most emotive and expressive instruments and I take inspiration from Elgar's Cello Concerto, which I angstily listened to on the flight home from my aforementioned interview. A lilting and lamenting cello solo is contrasted with an atonal, aimless piano accompaniment which reflects the topic of depression. The bargaining theme reprises slightly with both strings performing the major variation before leading to the final climax. The Acceptance section sees the principal theme finally fully resolved in a major mode and with diatonic harmony. This is an expressive section as the whole trio plays the same melody with very simple yet emotive harmonic accompaniment underneath. It consists of a set of cymbals „G, A and C, a splash or crash, an open triangle, a snare drum, One or 2 Gongs and a bass drum. For each voice in the ensemble score there is an individual part ready to print and an optional standard one. The parts are very easy to perform. The piece is can easily be adjusted to different situations. It is perfect for school ensembles and mixed groups of beginner students and advanced ones. A little story about this piece In my early teens I dreamed in my sleep that I met a very nice gentleman, in a beautiful garden. At the time I did not now that the man in my dream was my „genetic Grandpa himself, I had never seen a picture from him, only many years later after this dream. Now back to the Dream. Grandpa toke me from the garden to a House full of sculptures and art work. There was also a room with 3 great pianos, sat to perform on 3 different stages. Family life size portraits where hanging on a corridor. Another room was full of swords and ancient family weapons. In the end of the dream a dangerous Entity approached the house, Grandpa disappears and I had to leave the place in a hurry without being noticed. I climbed up the house and went hiding on the celling. I could than see a middle aged, middle-Lower class lady coming in the House, she was very stiff, all dressed in black like a widow. It was a very weary feeling, I woke up to never forget this dream. About 20 years later I was in that garden. It was really abandoned and I spend much of my time hanging there, I wrote a lot of music in this garden. I knew about The owner of this garden, he was living not so far away from me. Curious I decided to visit him. He leaved in the house that I dreamed of and he was actually my Father but I did not know that he was my Father and either did he knew about me being his son. He died shortly after we met. His name was Pedro Augusto Franco Dos Anjos Teixeira and my Grandpa was Artur Gaspar Dos Anjos Teixeira. Thanks to Claudia Eppelt for the all the Love and cover design. The story has some similarities with Tundalls Vision, that served as an inspiration for Dante's inferno.From wikipedia: The protagonist, Olav Åsteson, falls asleep on Christmas Eve and sleeps until the twelfth day of Christmas. Then he wakes, and rides to church to recount his dreams to the congregation, about his journey through the afterlife. The events are in part similar to other medieval ballads like the Lyke Wake Dirge: a moor of thorns, a tall bridge, and a black fire. After these, the protagonist is also allowed to see Hell and some of Heaven. The poem concludes with specific advice of charity and compassion, to avoid the various trials of the afterlife.

However, this was an unhappymarriage, short-lived, with numerous conflicts and separations. Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair, was written asperhaps an attempt to win his wife back. To add to his problems, Foster also ran into deep financial difficulties.Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair was virtually unknown during its time. When it was first published, the royaltieson the ten thousand copies sold, earned just $200 for Stephen Foster. To make ends meet, he had to sell the rights toJeanie, as well as other songs. After his death, the rights to Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair reverted back to hiswife and daughter.It would indeed be a pleasant surprise to Stephen Foster, if he only knew what a wide range of artists have adaptedthis song to different genres. The great R & B artist,Sam Cooke used it, as well as opera stars, Marilyn Horne and John McCormick, who added it to their concertrepertoire.The song's frequent airplay in the 1940's, led Spike Jones to create a parody, called, I Dream of Jeanie with theLight Blue Jeans. These musical 'Odalisques' are simple melodies that came to me one after the other in dreams, and upon waking I simply wrote them down. They have a folk like character but no folk music was consuIted.I do not know how they happened or why. I do know that I wanted to express the smile in music and this idea was much on my mind when I dreamed them.They may be played with the drone of an electronic tambura known as a 'Ragini' as accompaniment.Or they may be played alone as solos. They may also be played in groups playing some tutti or some alternating and taking turns one after the other. The work is for a variety of melodic instruments, and I have included parts for High, Middle and Low instruments. The preface gives a complete description of how to form a version for any musical needs.

Program note: My love affair with the city of Rome dates back to the year 1986-87 when I spent just under eleven months at the American Academy in Rome on a Rome Prize Fellowship. During that Fellowship year I was very much inspired by the beauty and culture of the Eternal City, which resulted in a number of works that continue to resonate with me: Twenty-nine Fireflies Book II for solo piano; Concertino for trumpet, timpani and strings; Apples … six dreams by Richard Kenney; String Quartet No 5 … Four Birthdays; and Chôrinhos … opus 38. Since 1997 my wife, Kristin Beckwith, and I have returned to the American Academy in Rome almost every year. I would compose in the morning and then my wife and I would go to our usual haunt at Bar G. for cappuccini and cornetti. And then we’d go to the local bakery and street markets and buy stuff for lunch. In the afternoon we would wander into the city to go shopping and sight-seeing. In the evenings we would dine at one of our favorite local trattorias. Life could not be better in Rome. Musically speaking, several important works in my portfolio had their beginnings during these sojourns at the Academy , among them Yo Picasso, Flauta Carioca, Mass for the Holy Year 2000, Symphony No. 5 … Utopia Parkway, Twenty-nine Fireflies Books IV & V, and Piano Concerto … Mozartiana. Just before the 2008 recession, clarinetist extraordinaire Jonathan Cohler asked me to write a symphony for the inaugural concert of a new orchestra he was planning to create. I came up with Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, my give back to the city of Rome – a compendium of favorite places that continue to live in my thoughts and musings. Although the work is heard in four movements, it is actually divided into seven sections, as in the seven hills of Rome. 1. Prelude: Fontana Paola and the panoramic view of the city of Rome from that vantage point. 2. First interlude: La Befana festivities at Piazza Navona. The Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio at night under a full moon. 3. Second interlude: Fontana delle Tartughe in the Jewish Ghetto. Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne at the Galleria Borghese. 4. Third interlude: Bernini’s Beata Ludovica Albertoni in Trastevere. The Spanish Steps and the view of Rome from the French Academy at Villa Medici. NB: Unfortunately, thanks to the recession, Roman Holidays never saw the light of day. This year (2013) I decided to revisit the work, which lay dormant for 5 five years, and saw that it could use a little tweaking. The new version is essentially the same, musically speaking. I reduced the orchestration a bit (two horns instead of four, and two trumpets instead of three) and added more heft to the lower brass. I completely rewrote the tune for the floating foreign ghosts at the Protestant Cemetery. I also shortened the work by about three minutes by cutting some repeats.
