Trumpets--Any Use? was inspired by Graeme Lawson’s book Sound Tracks which describes many archaeological discoveries of trumpets and by Kim Moore's poem, When to Play the Trumpet (she wrote several poems about trumpets).There are two sets of four songs: this is the second set.WELCOME This fanfare and processional sets lines from Tennyson's Welcome to Princess Alexandra (she married Edward, Prince of Wales, and became Queen). I use the wholetone mode.CALL TO ARMS Uses lines from Tennyson's Call to Arms and the US Army's bugle call To Arms. EvenTutankhamun had military trumpets( see graphic).REMEMBRANCE uses lyrics by Sue Spivey of Hessle (copyright) and the Last Post.REVELATION Deities often use trumpets. This chant in organum quotes lines from the Holy Bible's Revelation, 1 and 8, about the seven angels and the awful power of their trumpets, as revealed to John of Patmos.DURATION: all four songs, 14 minutes.

A short strophic vocal fanfare to honour the Royal Navy, the Trawlermen and the Lifeboatmen, written for the Trafalgar Bicentenary Day, 2005 and a concert to raise funds for the RNLI in Hessle, an area whose history is bound up with trawler fishing. The British Navy, under Horatio Nelson, defeated the Spanish and French fleets, making Britain safe from invasion for 200 years. There are some harsh harmonies but an air of triumph mixed with sadness.A Fanfare for SATB, optional piano support, words by Sue Spivey. Short, strophic, piquant harmony. First performed in Hessle for the RNLI at bicentenary of Trafalgar, 2005 by the Cottingham Singers, MD Margaret Wright. History, war, choir, fishing fleet, lifeboats.
