This brilliant Contemporary Classical piece borrows from many different styles. It is a Sonatina in 3 sections. The buoyant first section is quite Classical with a bit of fanfare, and then an Alberti Bass section that is an homage to Mozart. The expressive middle section is New Age in style and is in 7/4 Time Signature (3/4 then 4/4 in alternating sets, so not hard). The final section goes through several themes and a key change; having an ornamented Baroque theme, then a Classical theme reminiscent of the opening, then concluding with a Romantic era toccata. There are Chorale-like bridges linking the many sections and themes.

Befitting the more contemporary harmonic style, the V7 chord here is a minor 7th, not dominant. The difficulty in this piece starts at measure 10, where a contrapuntal voice jumps in. But it's short—and fun to play. A good showpiece for the advanced intermediate pianist.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767473). Basically it is a set of three dances loosely described as Allemande, Courante and Jygg. Orchestration is for string quintet Violins 1 & 2, Viola, Cello and Contrabass. The style of the first one is marcato, with a touch of irony! The Contrabass leads with an Alberti pattern followed by the first melodic idea stated on the Cello. This motif is eventually taken up by all the instruments. The melody then morphs into a lovely little B-section melody on the 1st Violin, with an obbligato on Violin 2, before the DS. Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long. Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the Contrabass and Cello. The middle section has a mournful Double Bassmelody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda. Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine.

This piece is great for young children beginning adults alike. First, there is an Alberti bass in the left hand for most of the piece; Alberti bass is a patterned bass used by the likes of Mozart, and it is a relatively easy way to allow for the suspension of a chord. The pedaling for this piece can also teach students how to change the pedal when changing chord harmonies in a fairly simplified pattern that usually lasts a measure. The dynamic markings are sparse at this point, but guide the student to start paying attention to loud and soft dynamics, and it is a good learning lesson about breaks and pauses in the music at the end of one patterned phrase and beginning of another. The music itself leaves a lot of room for emotive expression because one can play with a rubato that allows one to stretch some measures to emphasize certain harmonies. The whole piece sounds as if it were a setting of fairy tale set in the misty mountains complete with wizards, elves, and princesses. It is perfect for an ambient and poetic mood of a player who would like to learn a relatively simple piece. To practice this piece, try perfecting each section before going on to the next.

Very classical sounding, with Alberti Bass eighth notes, and right hand melody which consists mostly of quarter notes and occasional eighth and half notes. More pleasing than exciting. Musical interest will come from observing the articulation, especially the two-note slurs, and the staccato notes. The biggest challenge is probably balance between the hands: the right hand must sing above the left hand: mezzo forte actually means probably close to forte for the right hand, while the left hand must be piano. Bagatelle means trifle. The form is A-B-A* where the form of the A section in itself is A-B-B*-A* which means there is not that much material to learn. A student at this level will be familiar with Alberti Bass but does probably not have the stamina for a full page of continuous eighth notes, therefore, at the end of every four-measure phrase, the left hand gets a break, in the form of two quarter notes or a half note, instead of continuous eighth notes. Two pages, Level 2. ~ I frequently make changes to my compositions. The Missa Millennia was composed during the spring of 2000 and premiered the following November by the choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth, MN. Scored for a chamber orchestra of strings, keyboard, and solo oboe (full score and instrumental parts available separately), the work is not so much a celebration of the new millennium as it is an assimilation of many of the musical styles, characteristics, and forms of the previous thousand years. The entire piece is in the form of the traditional Mass, a musical form having its origins in the Middle Ages, and is divided into the five movements commonly found in the Mass Ordinary: Kyrie (Lord, have mercy), Gloria (Glory to God in the highest), Credo (the Nicene Creed), Sanctus – Benedictus (Holy, holy, holy – Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord), and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). In the final movement, the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace) concludes the work. Although the Missa Millennia as a whole is distinctly contemporary, elements from many earlier musical periods are incorporated into the movements. These include chant, open fifth and parallel fifth harmonic movement (organum), and canonic imitation from the Middle Ages and Renaissance; fugue, word-painting, terraced dynamics, ostinato (a repeated rhythmic or bass accompaniment), Alberti bass accompaniment figures, ABA form, and dominant-tonic harmonic relationships typical of Baroque and Classical music to name but a few. Other significant features are the usage of non-Western modality in the plaintive solo oboe and of pedal point, a sustained tone in the bass over which the melody and harmony evolve. Pedal point, a compositional tool used throughout music history, dates from the Middle Ages about the time of St. Francis. Although not directly based upon the music of any composer, the astute listener may hear musical ideas reminiscent of Vivaldi, Vaughan Williams, Respighi, Duruflé, and others. In the audio file, the 2nd movement (Gloria) can be found at approximately 6'25, the 3rd movement (Credo) at 12'05, the 4th movement (Sanctus) at 21'15, and the final movement (Agnus Dei) at 31'05. The complete Mass is approximately 43 minutes long.
