This piece introduces techniques used by Dmitri Kabelevsky in his well-known Toccatina. Kabelevsky's Toccatina exploits 1st inversion triads, and this piece creates the perfect opportunity to introduce the concept of triads and triad inversions. As a teacher, I propose that successful performance of triad inversions is likely the difference between students who will succeed and those who won't. The best piano teachers have never allowed this, but in many cases, so much time is wasted discussing and fixing these problems that all enthusiasm and momentum is lost for the student. What's needed is a new symbol that communicates clearly and immediately to the student what is being demanded by the music: not just notes, but also fingering. Elementary students who grow with the V system of hand positions move more quickly through their repertoire, because they don't waste as much time fixing problems, or worse, arguing with their teachers about why an awkward fingering is not allowed, even when they have correctly figured out the correct notes. .

Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1440114). Tom Lehrer is an American musician, singer-songwriter, satirist, and mathematician. He recorded pithy and humorous songs that became popular in the 1950s and 60s, often parodying popular musical forms, though they usually had original melodies (an exception is The Elements, in which he set the names of the chemical elements to the tune of the Major-General's Song from Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Pirates of Penzance'). Lehrer's early performances dealt with non-topical subjects and black humour in songs such as the 'vernal' waltz, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, which was recorded for the album 'An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer' in March 1959. The lyrics refer to killing pigeons with cyanide-coated peanuts and strychnine-treated corn. The latter method was used by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to control pigeon populations in Boston public areas during the 1950s. Available for concert band for the first time, this lovely melody deserves to be heard out in the open air to be enjoyed by those passing by, maybe unaware of the sinister nature of the song!

Sweetwater Brass Press #639202. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1033890). Jaromir Vejvoda, born in 1902 in the Czech city of Zbraslav, was a fiddler and flugelhorn player. As a young man, he began writing music while working as a bartender. In 1927 he composed a particularly rollicking, toe-tapping tune. He persuaded the Czech-American composer Eduard Ingriš to write an arrangement for the piece, and the result was titled "ModÅ™anská polka" (ModÅ™any being the Prague suburb in which it was first performed). In 1934 Václav Zeman added lyrics, and the title changed to "Škoda lásky," Czech for “Wasted Love.” It also became known as “Rosamunde.” The public loved it. It was so successful that Vejvoda was able to quit tending bar and turn full time to music. The polka soon spread to other countries. Lew Brown and Wladimir Timm added English lyrics, and when the Andrews Sisters recorded it in 1939 as “Beer Barrel Polka,” it became one of their biggest hits. During World War II it was the favorite song of the Western Allies and has since been played and recorded by literally dozens of artists. Suggested tempo for this brass quintet “Škoda lásky” is 120 BPM. It opens in C major, changes to F major, then back to C. All five instruments get a chance to shine. There are no really tricky rhythmic patterns, and the notes are, for the most part, within the normal playing range of each instrument. Some possible exceptions: Trombone’s highest notes are F above the staff; it’s lowest, G at the bottom; Tuba’s highest notes are F in the staff; Trumpet 2’s highest are its G at the top of its staff. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. One of the trials and tribulations of being a music teacher in the UK is the amount of time wasted in meetings that should really be held in the Maths department. On one such occasion, my Head of Department were so utterly bored and disinterested in useless information being imparted to us that we began a kind of musical chess game. Each of us in turn chose a length and a pitch and added wrote them down on a scrap of MSS paper that I found in a pocket. We had to make the motifs as musical as possible, while making it increasingly difficult for the other to finish off the current phrase. By the end of the meeting, we had completed the first phrase up to about measure 16. I took the scrap of paper home and developed it into this piece, which is actually rather good. The title is just We're Bored backwards! Enjoy!

Brahms's original work was for piano 4-hands. This brass quintet arrangement is a half step lower than Brahms's original piece, so it fits well into all of the brass parts. Higher brass all have ample rest and nothing is high or taxing. Also, the tempo changes have been written out, so there's no time wasted in rehearsal discussing how to handle tempo! Speaking of tempo...this piece is super fun to play for education shows. Kids can move along to the tempo and feel the abrupt changes throughout the piece.No playing headaches...just lots of fun for the musicians as well as the audience!
