Artaria Editions AE437Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one). Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, as well as for pedagogical use at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, for which he was educational director from 1788 until his death. This brief Allegro for violin and fortepiano was probably written around this time as a work intended for students at the aforementioned institution. This is evident in the use of deliberate devices, such as unison scalar passages and sustained notes in the violin part. Foreshadowing Hindemith's notion of Bildungsmusik from a century and a half later, it is clear that the intent is to create a substantive piece of music for future instrumentalists that not only allows for good compositional style, but both pedagogical function and a relatively easy degree of difficulty for the performers, as well. In 1993, Frances Rauscher, et al, published a study in which they attributed a temporary improvement (of around 15 minutes) in mental tasks such as those found in IQ tests... Now, my criticism goes further: the piece in question is the Allegro con spirito from Sonata for two pianos in D minor KV. 448 by Mozart, so far so good. If we look at the original score, Mozart does not mention pianos, nor their ancestor, the fortepiano, but clavicembalos, i.e. harpsichords. In modern music, the A4 is tuned to 440 Hz and the scale is divided into 12 semitones of identical distance between each of them, causing that the only pure interval between them is the octave and that the others are impure and cause unpleasant interferences. In past centuries, other temperaments were used to tune the scales, with more pure, harmonic intervals, without interferences, although the intervals between semitones were some larger than others, which is why there are compositions in different tones, because according to the temperament it provoked different sensations, but with the modern equal temperament that's part of the past... the equal temperament killed the harmony and the colors of the music as its composers imagined it, as they heard it. What's this all about? to which I have recorded the piece of the supposed Mozart Effect approaching what Mozart had in mind: with two harpsichords, both with the A4 tuned to 421.6 hz, according to the Steiner tuning fork, used at the time of composition of the piece in Vienna, (note: it's not enough to tune the A4 but also to tune the intervals), and tuned in the Kirnberger III temperament. Some intervals may seem out of tune to modern ears, but it is one of so many historical temperaments used in those times.

A piece in C minor for fortepiano, entirely based on five sketches by Beethoven: Biam. 349b (1802-1803), Biam. 280 (c. 1800), Biam. 349a (1802-1803), Biam. 467 (1808), and Biam. 472 (1808). Its interest lies in the combination and adjustment of the respective fragments, to result in a fluent piece in late Classical style. The sketches were expanded to exploit a bit their passing ideas (the double bars in the score indicate the end of the original material). A mysterious introduction in C minor (Largo, Biam. 349b) is continued by modulations reminding of the Introduzione to the Finale of Beethoven’s Op. 53 and linking it to the vivacious central section, with triplets (first, Allegro assai, in B major as a possible reading of Biam. 280, which was originally written down without a key signature). This is continued by a section in A major (Biam. 349a) and then in D minor, in triple time (Biam. 467). After a sudden stop, the mysterious introduction in C minor returns abbreviated, ending discretely in C major. Composed for the contest at the Centro Ricerche Musicali (C.R.M.) LVBEETHOVEN Italy. Piano sonata in Neoclassical style, developing the themes briefly tried out by Beethoven in the slow introduction to the Finale of his Sonata No. 29 op. 106 (1818). This first movement (Allegro moderato) utilizes the first two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of a sonata form in a mostly delicate, fantasia-like manner, with time signature ambiguity and alternance. The second movement (Allegro) utilizes the next two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of an agitated 'scherzo' in G sharp minor, with allusions to Bach's Prelude in C minor from the second book of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and to Beethoven's Bagatelle in G minor, op. 126 no. 2. The Finale (Largo - Allegro ma non troppo) utilizes first the searching sections of that Introduction, as an enigmatic preparation of the big surprise in the Finale proper: a set of nine, mostly powerful variations on a tone row, yet treated not entirely with the twelve-tone technique, but in extended tonality context. Variations 2-5 allude to motifs from the themes of the previous movements. The mp3 is a self-made recording of the first movement using a Graf 1826 fortepiano sampled by Modartt's Pianoteq.
