It is all about understanding melodic movement and direction.Welcome to the PCU Series for classroom-based groups. This series focuses on learning by doing; there are many accomplished performers within our school classrooms throughout the world, but my years of experience has taught me that many of these students learn to play by rote – literally be learning one note followed by another – without gaining full understanding of how the pieces work musically and theoretically. Indeed, some of them can perform to a high standard using this method, but then really struggle with composition and general musical understanding later in their educational careers.I equate this to learning to speak sentences in a foreign language without fully understanding what those sentences actually mean. So who is this book for?It is for music teachers to use with their students who are learning to create exam-level compositions within a school environment. It is ideal for courses such as the American High School Diploma, GCSE, IGCSE, SCS, HKCEE, IB(MYP), SPM, GCEO, CCEF, HKCEE, VSSD, GES or ICSE.It is designed to cater for almost any instrument due to the parts being provided in many different keys and clefs (including tab and bass tab). Drum parts are intentionally not provided as drummers still need to have a good understanding of non-percussive elements such as melody and harmony; I would suggest that they play a keyboard part for the purposes of learning about composition.You can also download backing tracks of all pieces in this series by searching:Classroom Performance educational pack: MELODY backing tracksThese contain parts 2-5, allowing part 1 to be played live over the top. How to use this resourceThis pack comprises three stages, the third of which should be gained from success with the first two:1. There will obviously be other musical components included within the piece as well, but the main element will be very apparent.2. ComposingWorksheets are provided to enable students to develop their own compositions based on the same focus as the performance piece. Elements of the performance piece are highlighted and short, developmental activities will lead to the students developing their own musical ideas.3. Understanding Summary worksheets are provided to enable students to demonstrate their understanding of the topic.There are two musical elements which appear in all pieces within this PCU series. They are dynamics and articulation. About the arrangement This is pianist/arranger Thomas Gunther's beautiful and highly accurate piano solo arrangement of the 2023 Barbie Movie features Billie Eilish's song WHAT I WAS MADE FOR.  It includes even Billie's quiet humming passages.This solo piano version can be played all by itself, or with Billie's recording of the song.It is easy enough to learn for pianists that have no amazing techniqual skills, but can be challanging in different ways, as explained below. From the Arranger Thomas Gunther  The most challenging task when writing this solo piano arrangement of What I Was Made For was to notate Billie's rhythm accurately. Her melodic rhythm is very important as it supports the flow of the lyrics perfectly. Notating a singer's rhythm can unfortunately never be 100% perfect (notation is by definition quantized), but I think I got very close. An other challenge was to get the accompaniment sound like the original without stepping on the melody notes. Looking at my final version I think it is as good as it gets for a piano adaption of this highly emotional song.I really hope all you Billie Eilish fans out there will enjoy playing this arrangement! How difficult is it As mentioned earlier, the song looks simple, but to play it well there is a lot of things the pianist has to take care of. The most challenging aspect is to sustain some notes by either using clever fingering or employing the sustain pedal. Also, dynamics are really important, especially when ballancing the accompaniment against the melody. Fingering I included fingering numbers to give the pianist a starting point. But fingering is a highly subjective affaire. Every pianist should feel free to adapt her/his own fingering as see fit. Sustain pedal usage The sustain pedal usage is very important in this arrangement (I included sustain pedal markings for this very reason). For one, it helps sustaining some notes that can't be held otherwise, and of course to make the sound fuller (more cinematic). It is important to use the pedal to create a sense of space (distance). After all, the original recording uses a lot of reverb to achieve that. Chord Symbols I did not include pop chord symbols because the harmony to the the song is very simple and based around 4 diatonic chords. It would just cludder up the score. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972672). Sonata Hymnica No. 5 has the subtitle Scenes of Calvary. Landscape paintings and printed illustrations of the Cross of Calvary were ubiquitous in Christian literature in the late 19th century, so it not surprising that allusions to such art are found in the texts of hymns. The three hymns heard in Sonata Hymnica No. 5 all evoke some sense of seeing, in a spiritual way, the scene of the Crucifixion. Sonata Hymnica No. 5 opens with a sturdy and rugged statement of When I Survey the Wond’rous Cross, written by Isaac Watts in 1707. This poem continues: On which the Prince of Glory dy’d, . . . See from His Head, his Hands, his Feet, Sorrow and Love flow mingled down! In the United States, music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) composed a tune in 1824 for singing Watts’ hymn. Named HAMBURG tune, it was an adapted form of some Gregorian chant in Church Mode I. This combination of poem and tune became very popular; so much so, that by the 1880s, elaborations of it appeared in print. The most enduring is the pairing of Watts’ poem and Mason’s tune with a simple camp meeting song, At the Cross, to be a refrain. It has the phrases, At the cross, where I first saw the light . . . It was there by faith I received my sight. The centerpiece of Sonata Hymnica No. 5 is the tune TOPLADY, the usual tune for singing Rock of Ages. This tune was composed in 1830 by Thomas Hastings (1784-1872), an associate of Lowell Mason in New York. He wrote hymns and hymn tunes, published hymnals, and worked tirelessly to elevate choral singing in churches. Hastings indicated that he intended his tune for singing Rock of Ages by naming it after the author of the hymn-poem, the English pastor Augustus Toplady (1740-1778). The Rev. A. B. Grosart wrote in a memorial that Toplady was no poet or inspired singer, but an impulsive, rash-spoken, reckless preacher who could nonetheless picture vanishing gleams of imaginative light in his hymnic verses. A better impression was gained by poet A. C. Benson (1862-1925), who, upon hearing Rock of Ages sung at William Gladstone’s funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1898 --- a rare State funeral attended by several members of the British Royal family --- wrote, To have written such words which should come home to people in moments of high, deep, and passionate emotion . . . there can hardly be anything worth doing better than that. This high compliment came from the poet who, a few years later, would write the words of Elgar’s Coronation Ode for King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. A camp meeting song, a rash-spoken English pastor, two American music educators, a State funeral at Westminster Abbey --- such is the wide world of influence and inspiration of these three Scenes of Calvary.

Bublles, Floating Bubbles - by Juan MarÃa Solare Bubbles, Floating Bubbles on Youtube: Bubbles, Floating Bubbles on Spotify: This composition is a concert etude, since it can be performed at a recital (and not only used to practice). The degree of virtuosity is relatively low, but nevertheless not suitable for absolute beginners. Technically, the main characteristic of this piece is the polyrhythm 2 against 3: the melody subdivides the quarter in 2, and the accompaniment plays triplets. In this sense, an answer to Carl Czerny's polyrhythmic studie in E major. Please use abundant pedal when playing this piece. The idea is to generate a cloud of sound, not a machinal pattern. The sound character of this piece should be closer to Debussy than to Scarlatti. The initial indication scorrevole (fleeting) should orientate the character and the sound quality, the touch. Fermatas and caesuras should add time to the bar, like breathing in. In bar 8 (end) the silence is only in he left hand: the note of the right hand shouldn't be interrupted. This is actually clear if one read the rhythms carefully, but my experience tells me that it is prudent to underline this particular point. In bar 16 (and similar places), left hand: it is the central melody what should be in foreground, not the bass. Imagine that the melody is played by a cello or viola, and the bass by a double bass (or better: a bassoon). Try to achieve a different timbre and to separate therefore both layers. The title refers to this poem: Sum venti ingenium breve Flos sum, scilicet, aeris …… Sum blandum, petulans, vagum, Pulchrum, purpureum, et decens, Comptum, floridulum, et recens. Three Pieces for Beginner Guitarists (Acoustic or Electric) by Dan Jones Presented in notes, TAB and easy chords (www.danjonesguitarist.com) As an active guitar teacher, I find that many beginner pupils want to learn either acoustic (steel string) guitar or electric guitar. I have also found a lack of quality resources in these styles which have musical interest, and which lay out some of the necessary technical and musical foundations for future learning. I composed these three little pieces for my own young students. They are played by those using their right-hand fingers, and a plectrum and I’ve found them to be very popular in both lessons and performance. The pieces can be learnt in any order (I have a slight preference for starting my pupils with D-Day Rock - the third in the collection). Below is an outline of the pedagogy behind them (1) Sore Finger Blues This is a simple twelve-bar blues which uses a combination of open strings and notes at the third and second frets. It can be played with a straight or swung rhythm. It is effective at a slow tempo for those needing time to place the fretting hand fingers. The main technical challenge is in bars 10 and 22 where the player moves the third finger between the G and A on string 1. Although this is traditionally an advanced technique, I’ve found my students find it comfortable, as long as the fingering outlined in the notes is followed. The chords are dominant (with major thirds). These clash against the minor pentatonic scale in a way which is typical of the style. The chords are quite simple for beginners. I have opted for a D5 power-chord in bars 9 & 21 which is easier than the usual D chord (which also works perfectly well). Plectrum players should be sure to anchor the plucking hand, either with the side of the hand resting on the bridge, or a finger against the scratch plate of the guitar. Fingerstyle players can anchor either with a finger touching the scratch plate of the guitar, or by resting the thumb on a bass string when the fingers are plucking, or vice versa. This is more typical of classical style. (2) Cross-String Traffic This piece was conceived as a fingerstyle piece, although it can be played using a plectrum. The challenge for plectrum players is to cross the strings smoothly. It is for this reason that the fretting hand is relatively simple so that learners can concentrate on the plucking hand. Players are also encouraged to press down the index finger on string 2 at the correct angle to allow the first string to resonate. Chords have once again been chosen to suit less-experienced fingers; therefore, I have opted for Dm6 instead of the more common Dm (a very tricky chord for beginners). Players should go for maximum resonance and notes played at fret 3 could be fretted with either fingers 3 or 4. (3) D-Day Rock This piece is made nearly entirely of open strings and third fret notes. Where there is string crossing, the music allows the player ‘thinking time’ to change accordingly. Teachers and learners can decide with which finger to press the third fret notes. The rhythmic complexities from bar 13 to the end pose no problems once players have the sound of the piece in their ear. Once again, chords have been selected for ease of playing. The Gm/D chord can be played with a 3-string barre (often quite easy for beginners where no fretted bass note is required) or using three separate fingers. The pedal D sounds effective musically. I have presented these pieces as ensemble works with large groups of beginners. Players and audiences alike have been very receptive! Probably most widely known as "The Water Is Wide,"<br> it is also well known by it's more ancient title: "O Waly Waly." The tune is also known as " When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," and "The Gift of Love."<br> This is an original arrangement from the ground up.<br> <br> Programming:<br> If you are looking for something with new contrapuntal and harmonic adventures for a Lenten prelude or a meditation during Holy Week, this will fit the bill.<br> It could also work well in a recital setting because it fits well on the instrument, and provides a chance to show off long, sensitive musical phrases.<br> Some of the figures in the descant verse are a wee-bit more advanced so, this is for intermediate players rather than beginners.<br> <br> Keep in mind these performance ideas:<br> 1. It's a simple tune that needs to unfold in the due course of time, so don't rush it. A slight ritardando at the end of each verse may help if you want to further delineate the verses.<br> 2. There is a lot of interesting counterpoint here, so be prepared to give-and-take on the dynamics more than what I have indicated.<br> 3. The final verse is much slower and more mysterious, and the dynamics are crucial - the quieter the better. I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the celebrated pianist Nicolas Horvath for enthusiastically bringing my Debussy works to public attention in their solo piano formats, both through his recent recitals across France and through this Naxos Grand Piano release (GP822). In some cases these are true piano pieces (like Toomai des éléphants), in others they are piano reductions of orchestral scores (like Fêtes galantes), while in others they are piano solos in their own right that also exist in orchestral versions (as in the incidental music for Le Roi Lear). Needless to say, most of these tracks are world première recordings, and this is certainly true of A Night in the House of Usher and its companion piece Un Jour affreux avec Le Diable dans le beffroi (?A Dreadful Day with the Devil in the Belfry?) which I arranged specially for Nicolas in November 2018 as a virtuosic, almost Lisztian paraphrase-fantasy. To remind us of the plot as the dramatic scenes unfold, Un Jour affreux avec le Diable dans le beffroi, like the start of No-ja-li) has a narrator (spoken in French by Florient Azoulay on the Grand Piano recording): [After an overture rising from the underworld, with a polka and a citation of a chldren?s folksong Savez vous plantez les choux?, a carillon rings out]: Hearing it, the Dutch villagers start to count, with the bells of the belfry / 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 8, 9, 11, and 12 / Perfect! / 13!?!/ The bell rang 13 times / 13! / The Devil is here where the clock should be! / Damn! / The bells are cracked. / The Devil laughs fit to burst / He pulls from the pocket of his coat, a small dancing master?s violin / ?My God!? says the devil ? and he tunes his violin slowly / The Devil leads the villagers in a fantastic and relentless jig [making jokes at the expense of concertos by Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky] / The Devil directs the villagers towards the canal ? where he jumps to the other side, laughing all the time / The villagers try to imitate him, but they fall into the water. / [In Part 2] the villagers are transported to a hedonistic and lively Italian village. They are similarly transformed: the men have crooked hats ? the women have wide open bodices! They dance a mad Tarantella / 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 13 / shouting ?Hey there! (Hola?) / Jean, the young hero, makes a fervent prayer to God against the Devil / The prayer is answered and the bell again rings normally! / The expression of the Devil changes: he shudders! / Everything goes black / The devil disappears in a brief red glow ? / And the carillon and the bells chime as usual / 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 / Perfect! / But the Devil?s grinning face ap- pears once again where the clock should be ? briefly

I have always loved this piece--it brings the spirit of all the good things that the season can bring! There is a reason why there are so many arrangements of this piece--it has a beautiful melody and invites oodles of creativeness when it comes to the harmony and arranging.
