It was a softly falling snow, and inspired me to write this piece.Play as smoothly as you can throughout the whole piece. Make sure you count very carefully in measure 21 and 22; the rhythms might surprise you. Also pay close attention to how the music is slurred. When you tongue, do so gently. The more you can help others imagine a quiet day with snow falling slowly and gently, the better. Nowhere in this piece should you play very loudly – even the mezzo forte sections should be on the softer side.Time: ca. 1:30Range: Bb2-C4Key: Bb MajorTime Signature: 4/4I would generally use this piece with a solid first year bassoon student transferring from another instrument, or a second year bassoonist. There are a couple places where flicking up to Bb is advised. Other technical considerations are moving between D and Eb, and F and G. There are also a few rhythmic challenges such as eighth to dotted quarter, and eighth note and two sixteenths.Once the student has purchased this piece, an adjudicator’s copy may be made. Published by Angela Salvaggione (A0.1316530). This piece is based on a ground, or ostinato. That means it has a repeating pattern, in this case, eight bars. La Folia is a ground that’s been used by many composers over the centuries, including Corelli (Violin Sonata Op. 5, no. 12) and Vivaldi (Trio Sonata, Op. 1 no. 12), and more recently, Rachmaninoff (Variations on a Theme of Corelli) and Manuel Ponce (Variations sur Folia de España et fugue), and more recently still, Glen Shannon’s La Follia Variations for recorder ensemble. Many of these pieces are quite long to listen to, but are written for a variety of instruments and a variety of styles. Perhaps it will inspire you to try and write a variation yourself. You can have your teacher play the ground and you play your variation at the same time to see if you like how it sounds together. Warning! DO NOT start this piece too fast! The opening theme is very easy, but after every eight bars, each variation becomes more difficult as you Level Up through the piece. Listen for the train whistles in the piano part. By the very end, the ride is over and the train is pulling into its final stop at the station.This piece is very much influenced by the piano piece Le Chemin de Fer, by Charles-Valentin Alkan. I highly recommend you find a recording of this piano piece to listen to. Don’t try to play Train Ride that fast though! My recording of the bassoon piece is at quarter note at 164. You need not play it that fast. So long as your playing has energy, very solid steady beat, and tongued notes are clear, that will carry the feel of the piece. Time: ca. 2:00-3:00, depending on tempo choiceKey: D minorRange: D2-Eb4I would use this piece with my second or third year students. Younger students should play it on the slower side. Maybe for a reason, or maybe not.The piano part has some very grumpy sounding chords throughout the whole piece. See if you can have someone play the piano part for you as you learn this song, so you get used to some of the very dissonant, clashing sounds you hear. Pay careful attention to the articulation markings. Use clear tonguing on the staccato notes, and overall make sure your staccatos are as short as you can make them. Accents should be strong. Loud sections can sound like someone stomping around, and the quieter sections are when they are sitting down, but still upset about things.This piece works on thumb low notes, particularly C, D and Eb. It is in rondo form, and each return of the A section is a bit more technical.Time: ca. 2:00Key: C minorRange: C2-C4This piece would be a good introduction to the bottom register of the bassoon, focusing on C, D and Eb in particular. Once the student has purchased this piece, an adjudicator’s copy may be made. Springtime Swing is just a happy, bouncy tune in rondo form. Hummingbirds has all three parts flitting about, darting here and there. Ghost Story should be played as spookily as you can. Toboggans is a race down a steep, snow-covered slope. Hold on tight! Total playing time ca. 5 minues.

Think about a spring day with warn sunshine and nothing to do except enjoy the outdoors.As you practice this, make sure you are very confident in your steady beat and your rhythms. The piano part is often playing something very different from you and it can be tricky to play together if you’re not very certain of your own counting. At measure 37, the piano has the melody and you have a countermelody. This is your time to support the piano player and let them lead for a while. Measure 52, perhaps a few clouds float by for a while, or the breeze picks up a bit. Originally for flute, I've transcibed it for bassoon and realized the figured bass for piano. Though the piece doesn't have a wide range (Eb2 - Eb4), by the last divisions there are plenty of running sixteenth notes, and no rests to be found anywhere. That makes this a good piece for technique and endurance, without having to worry much about notes themselves.You are encouraged to experiment with dynamics, articulations, and ornamentation.

The first theme (mm 5-20) should have a very ethereal, mysterious character, which is characterized by its key of g minor. The second theme (mm 21-28) is somewhat brighter, with the sun trying to work its way through the mists. The mists conquer the sun as the first theme returns (mm 33-40). Finally, the sun is victorious and shines brightly through the mists (mm 41-54). Notice how the music moves to a major key and the piano accompaniment is much more energetic and joyful. Your playing should convey those feelings. As night falls, though, the mists move back in as the first theme returns once again, and the whole piece fades into calm, mist-covered darkness.

The first verse's gentle, flowing feel is the comfort of knowing we've been walking a path together. The second verse, a bit stronger, with the full choir entering, builds this comfort and joy of common experience. The third verse, with its darker text, should also have a more misterioso feel, but don't let it drag. Our parting is approaching. The fourth verse should have a lighter, more sparkling feel, with streams and snowflakes and growing understanding that though what may seem final is not, merely a new way of being. The resoluteness of the fifth verse reflects the strength of knowing that the path we have shared together regardless of our proximity, and gives us strength and joy in knowing that our lives are bettered by our shared experiences. The coda, beginning in measure 95, brings us back to a more settled feel, as we are comforted by the memory of those shared experiences. By the final bars, we arrive at a restful state, comfortable knowing that though time has passed and circumstances have changed, we have been blessed by what we've experienced together.

The first section (mm 1-8) should be strongly accented, and all notes should be separated, depicting a medieval military group moving into protect a town. The second theme (mm 9-16) requires a quiet but firm strength and signifies the militia standing quietly at the ready. All quarter notes with tenuto marks should have weight to them. Listen carefully for the initial militant theme as it returns in the piano part (mm 17-24); it should be played strongly and heard clearly. The third theme, depicting the village resting peacefully, unaware of the battle, is in the new key of D major. Pay attention to the F#s and the C# at the end of this lyrical section. The first theme returns again at measure 39 in yet another new key, e minor. The piece builds from here to the end as the village is saved. The bassoon part states the same idea four times in measures 45-48, and each statement should be stronger than previous one.
