Published by MyMusicScores.com (A0.736797). Johann Anton Filtz (1733 - 1760) was just 26 years old when he died! In his short time on earth, he studied law and theology at the University of Ingolstadt, was a cellist in the Mannheimer Hofkapelle and a composer of at least thirty-four symphonies, thirty concertos and several chamber works. Being a member of the Mannheimer Hofkapelle puts Filtz's compositions clear in the Mannheim school along with fellow composers Franz Xaver Richter, Carl Stamitz, Franz Ignaz Beck, Ignaz Fränzl, and Christian Cannabich. His 6 Symphonies Op. 1 are all scored for strings and continuo and consist of three movements - fast - slow- fast. I can't find a recording of Filtz's Symphony Op.1 No.5 in F major or a modern edition of this work. I do hope that you will find this work interesting enough to play and perform. If you do perform it, I would love to hear your recording.

Key: F major.A cellist in the Mannheim court orchestra, Anton Filtz (1733-1760) wrote two well-known flute concertos and numerous chamber music works apart from 40 symphonies. Schubert wrote about him in his 'Ästhetik der Tonkunst' (1784): 'Filtz is one of the older composers of the Mannheim orchestra; his spirit and his works have made him immortal long since'. The Trio Sonata in F major is the fifth of the 'Six Sonatas' published in London around 1775, a brilliant, early classical work full of beautiful musical ideas. Suited for music teaching, the 'Jugend musiziert' competition, and concert performances.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q957). Johann Georg Christoph Schetky (1737-1824) grew up at the court of Hessen-Darmstadt where his father was in service to the landgrave Ludwig VIII as a musician and secretary. Schetky studied composition with Samuel Endler and cello with Anton Filtz. Later, he played the cello in the Darmstadt Court Orchestra, and from 1768 he gave concerts as a freelance cellist, at first in Hamburg and from 1772 in London. In 1774 he became principal cellist of the Edinburgh Musical Society and married the daughter of the Austrian cellist Joseph Reinagle (1762-1836). The cello duets op. 7 were written for teaching purposes and first published in 1780. The duets are extremely suitable for tuition. There are rewarding exercises for both players - tailor-made for the instrument.
