The Symphony No. 9 in E minor, From the New World, Op. 95, B. 178 (Czech: Symfonie Ä. 9 e moll Z nového svÄ›ta), popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by AntonÃn Dvořák in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered in New York City on 16 December 1893. It has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. In older literature and recordings, this symphony was – as for its first publication – numbered as Symphony No. 5. Astronaut Neil Armstrong took a tape recording of the New World Symphony along during the Apollo 11 mission, the first Moon landing, in 1969. The symphony was completed in the building that now houses the Bily Clocks Museum. Sample video performed by Berliner Philharmoniker, (cond. Claudio Abbado).

The Czech composer Antonn Dvoand#345;k became the director of theNational Conservatory of Music in New York City in 1892 (a post he helduntil 1895). Whilst in North America, he became fascinated by Native Americanmusic and the African-American spirituals that he heard. After a commission in1893 from the New York Philharmonic, he wrote the Symphony No. 9 in E minor,"From the New World", also known as the ?New World? Symphony ? not onlyhis most famous symphony but one of the most popular symphonies of all time.
The second movement (Largo) features the famous cor anglaissolo, arranged here for solo piano. It was famously used in a British advert for the bread-brandHovis and was adapted into the spiritual-like song ?Goin? Home? by one ofDvoand#345;k's pupils in 1922.
Dvoand#345;k explained the Native-American influences in the symphonyin an article published by the New York Herald: ?I have not actually used anyof the [Native American] melodies. I have simply written original themesembodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes assubjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms,counterpoint, and orchestral colour.?
A recording of the ?New World? Symphony was taken along on theApollo 11 mission by Neil Armstrong in 1969.

His symphony was composed while he was in America and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. It has been said that Dvorak's themes in his symphony were inspired by American folk melodies, especially Afro-American or American Indian. But his themes are just as similar to Bohemian folk music and most likely from that music. This arrangement is based on the one played in the movie Clear and Present Danger by the United States Air Force Band. It has been used at presidential funerals for the departure ceremonies at Andrews Air Force Base for Presidents Reagan and Ford and was used in 1998 for the dis-interment ceremony for the Vietnam Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery. This is my arrangement of the 4th movement: Finale (Vivace ma non troppo) It is in a traditional rondo form, A–B–A–C–A–B–A. The main melody is pentatonic. The B section is more lyrical, but continues in the spirit of the first theme. The C section is a chorale theme. I have adapted the string music for winds, and included some sustained horn chords. It has a similar feel to the finale of Dvorak’s wind serenade in D minor op.44.

The quartet is one of the most popular in the chamber music repertoire. For the London premiere of his New World symphony, Dvořák wrote: As to my opinion I think that the influence of this country (it means the folk songs)) is to be seen, and that this and all other works (written in America) differ very much from my other works as well as in colour as in character,. A characteristic, unifying element throughout the quartet is the use of the pentatonic scale. This scale gives the whole quartet its open, simple character, a character that is frequently identified with American folk music. However, the pentatonic scale is common in many ethnic musics worldwide, and Dvořák had composed pentatonic music, being familiar with such Slavonic folk music examples, before coming to America Specific American influences have been doubted: In fact the only American thing about the work is that it was written there, writes Paul Griffiths.
