Appalachia Waltz is a piece composed by Mark O?Connor for unaccompanied violin which gained fame as the title track from the album featuring O?Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release remained for many months in the top ten of Billboard Magazine?s Classical music chart. O?Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993 before he brought it to the trio when compiling material for their album. Here, adapted to viola, ?Appalachia Waltz? is very similar to the violin version O?Connor performs in his solo concerts. With the musical influences coming from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, it is one of O?Connor?s most beautiful pieces. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

In describing Vistas, Mark O’Connor explains the works initial inspiration came from his home studio in Vista, California. From his studio he has three magnificent views. In composing the piece he contemplated the three different views of the musicians, their three personalities and how they come together to speak the same language to say the same thing. In his liner notes for the album, respected classical producer and author John Schaefer describes the work as sprawling, almost narrative. A very small theme is explored separately by all three instruments, each arriving at the same melodic conclusion but at different points. Put together in almost a symphonic form, Vistas suggests a journey beneath big skies and far-off horizons, and finally, a return home. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels. The piece was one of the stand-out cuts, receiving a wide variety of radio play, and bringing the trio’s music to new audiences. Written originally for the mandolin, it surely is one of O’Connor’s most memorable mandolin melodies. With the aid of Edgar Meyer arranging the fabulous cello and bass solo sections, the piece can be performed in a variety of instrumental settings. The mandolin part could be also covered by guitar, piano, harp or most any chordal instrument. The piece was named by a young music student at an inner-city camp for underprivileged youths. At his workshop, O’Connor performed his new piece on the mandolin and asked for the kids to help him name it. The title, Butterfly’s Day Out, helped O’Connor complete his vision for the tune. The whole experience also inspired the idea for O’Connor to start his own Fiddle Camps. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels. Appalachia Waltz by Mark O?Connor is the title track from the album featuring O?Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release debuted and then stayed for several months at the No.1 position on Billboard Magazine?s Classical music chart. O?Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993. For the recording with Ma in 1996, O?Connor and Meyer re-arranged the waltz for violin, cello and doublebass. As it currently appears in this manuscript, O?Connor adapts the instrumentation for string quartet. ?Appalachia Waltz? might well be one of Mark O?Connor?s most-loved compositions. It utilizes musical inspiration from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, while crafted into a classical music setting. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

In describing Vistas, Mark O’Connor explains the works initial inspiration came from his home studio in Vista, California. From his studio he has three magnificent views. In composing the piece he contemplated the three different views of the musicians, their three personalities and how they come together to speak the same language to say the same thing. In his liner notes for the album, respected classical producer and author John Schaefer describes the work as sprawling, almost narrative. A very small theme is explored separately by all three instruments, each arriving at the same melodic conclusion but at different points. Put together in almost a symphonic form, Vistas suggests a journey beneath big skies and far-off horizons, and finally, a return home. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.
