Published by Pitch Perfect Music Services (A0.1512874). Phil Dickson is a Scot, living in Yorkshire, who has been composing light classical style piano pieces for many years. His musical idols include John Field, Chopin, Mozart, Gershwin, The Beatles and Hoagy Carmichael.This is Phil’s first album, called ‘Archipelago’. It was recorded, produced and mixed at John Parr’s (famed for ‘St Elmo’s Fire’ and numerous pop songs and movie soundtracks in the ‘80s and ‘90s) intimate studio ‘Somewhere in Yorkshire’. Each of the 9 tracks has its own distinctive character but there is a clear, unique signature across all of the compositions. In CD form, the album is ideal to have playing in the room, or the car, but equally merits being listened to with intent as each piece has it’s own narrative. The title track ‘Archipelago’ was inspired by the glorious islands off the coast of Argyle – which is definitely one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Each track has its own backstory, and Phil would be very happy to relate them to any musician or listener who would like to find out more. Las Encantadas was the eloquent name bestowed upon the Galápagos Islands by the Dominican friar and Panamanian bishop, Fray Tomás de Berlanga.  He had discovered these enchanted isles quite by chance as the ship he was on, sailing by order of the Holy Roman Emperor, was blown off course hundreds of miles from its Peruvian destination, landing him among the islands of the Columbus Archipelago.  Born in fire and rich with natural beauty Las Encantadas held some mystery for sailors as these isles would seemingly appear, and disappear, from sight, apparently becoming lost in the mists and sea currents that surrounded the islands.  Las Encantadas also held some intrigue for the American author Herman Melville, who in his novella by the same name, included ten fictional short sketches about the Galápagos Islands in The Piazza Tales.Kerion Anderson tells the story of these now well-known islands in his own inimitable way with his work, Las Encantadas, by drawing musical sketches for us that depict the discovery of this archipelago with their sandy warm beaches, their rugged and forbidding coast lines with towering rocks standing as sentinels to the peaceful, blue-watered bays.  When listening to Las Encantadas one can’t help but picture a ship arriving among the isles, with sails unfurled, and sailors standing on deck gazing in wonderment at the strange animals, colorful flora and the exotic birds swirling overhead.  The uplifting spirit of Las Encantadas takes us from island to island until the music bids farewell to these enchanted isles as the ship sails away at the setting of the sun, leaving us with a sense of pathos and wonder.

The eruption continued until the late morning of August 27th, destroying over 70% of the island, the surrounding archipelago, and collapsed into a caldera.This event is counted as one of the deadliest and most destructive events in recorded history. Over 36,000 deaths were the result of both the eruption and the tsunamis that were created. Weeks later, the eruptions on Krakatoa intensified, causing explosions on neighboring islands. Globally, these explosions had effects on Australia and as far away as South Africa.The 1883 Krakatoa eruption also darkened the sky worldwide for years afterwards, caused by volcanic ash. Spectacular sunsets were created and they inspired artists to capture the effects. British artist William Ashcroft made numerous color sketches, attempting to capture the look of the red-tinged skies, and there is a theory that Edvard Munch's blood-red sky depicted in the painting, The Scream, was inspired from his observing the color of the sky over Norway at the time.Of all the original compositions and arrangements that I have written, this is my first foray into program music. Program music can be a difficult genre; has the story really been conveyed? Does the orchestration fit the composition? Is it too short, or rather, way too long.I decided to write this for woodwind choir, rather than woodwind quintet. The sound of a woodwind choir offers enough variety of sound to convey both the frenetic quality of panic, fear, and desperation of a volcanic eruption, and yet the calm, sadness of how people felt, not knowing when things were going to erupt again.

Each movement draws on inspiration from Kara’s own time at sea serving in the military imagined as a suite of four short programmatic movements. We follow a young sailor as they stagger around the deck in the rough weather, finally succumbing to the corkscrew motion of the ocean in ‘Sea Sick Shanty’; a moment of peace and beauty for the young sailor as the ship sails through an ‘Archipelago’ teaming with marine life; In ‘Brew Time March, the young sailor excitedly hears the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee and sit on the bow to watch the waves… lost in thoughts, they unexpectedly hear the sound of work recommencing, and scurry back, making it just in the nick of time… waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time! The preparation, spectacle, pride, and excitement of ‘Sailing into Harbour’ completes this suite, suitable for an intermediate to more advanced player looking for something entertaining and a little bit different! Range E1-G4.
