Shield's Trios, written for a continental audience, are seminal works in the composer's output and mark a new level of compositional attainment in the English chamber music repertory. Technically, they contain a wide variety of ideas which are developed with great ingenuity through a wide range of keys, dynamic contrasts and timbral effects. Aesthetically, they blend 'popular' and 'learned' taste along with 'orchestral' splendour and 18th century notions of beauty. The Trios present a dazzling range of moods and style with each work demonstrating Shield's mastery of the idiom, both in his treatment of individual instruments and in the handling of textures. While there is no shortage of melody and accompaniment, in which the violin takes the lead, there are many memorable solos for the viola and the cello in its high register. The wide range of textures includes melodic decoration, dialogue, contrast of high and low register, legato and staccato, powerful unison and double octaves. Shield's ability to incorporate arioso-like melody, the prevailing 'symphonic' style and folk elements was largely achieved through the cross-generic requirements of English comic opera (a form to which Shield devoted himself during the whole of his creative career). In general, Shield's technique results in a firm control of the way music moves - with sometimes a surprising degree of stylistic restlessness and sometimes of unexpected plainness and simplicity. The trios Shield selected for publication were issued by Longman and Broderip, London, in January 1796 under the inspection of the composer. No autograph of these works survives and Longman and Broderip's printing, a copy of which is preserved in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, under the call number Mus.Instr.I 214(15), is the only source of this edition. The title page, with its dedicatory inscription, reads: Six / TRIOS / FOR / Violin, Tenor and Violoncello, / Composed / And Inscribed to the Memory of / Jacob More Esqr. / By / Wm. SHIELD./ (Musician in Ordinary to His Majesty) / Entd. At Statn. Hall [rule] Price 10/6 / ADVERTISEMENT / These Trios were Composed chiefly for the abovementioned Celebrated Landscape Painter (in Rome) / And are Dedicated to his Memory as a Token of Gratitude for the Services he rendered the Author / during his Residence in that City. The movements which are written in the uncommon Time / of 5/4 have amused some of the most distinguished Professors both in England & Italy which / induces the Author to hope they will not be disagreeable to the Public at Large / Goodge Street, Jany. 1st 1796 / [rule] / London, Printed for the Author by Longman & Broderip, No.26, Cheapside & No.13, Haymarket. Shield's three previously unpublished string trios are preserved in autograph score in the British Library under the call number Ms.Add.51015; they provide the only source for this edition. This present edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of these sources. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout and, where missing, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. This arrangement sets the opening in C Major, so that the lower open strings of the cello can be used for harmonies. Program note: In 1997, I wrote Yo Picasso for clarinetist Nancy Braithwaite and the Arto Ensemble; scored for clarinet, viola, cello and piano. The work is in five movements, each a musical interpretation of a painting by Pablo Picasso. Fifteen years later Nancy told me she has a new group called the Emmelos Ensemble and they are planning to perform the Schubert Octet in F major, D. 803, in the spring of 2012. She asked me if I would be interested in writing a companion work with the same instrumentation as the Schubert. She also mentioned that Schubert’s inspiration was based on Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major, opus 20. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. My Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) is, like the Beethoven and the Schubert, in six movements. The instrumentation is, like the Schubert, scored for Bb clarinet, bassoon, horn in F, string quartet and contrabass. 1. Prelude … Moderato; Scherzo … Prestissimo! 2. Arioso … Allegro con moto 3. Numinoso … Largo 4. Alla Marcia … Allegretto 5. Recitativo … Adagio; Canzone … Adagio 6. Bacchanale … Prestissimo! Program note: In 1997, I wrote Yo Picasso for clarinetist Nancy Braithwaite and the Arto Ensemble; scored for clarinet, viola, cello and piano. The work is in five movements, each a musical interpretation of a painting by Pablo Picasso. Fifteen years later Nancy told me she has a new group called the Emmelos Ensemble and they are planning to perform the Schubert Octet in F major, D. 803, in the spring of 2012. She asked me if I would be interested in writing a companion work with the same instrumentation as the Schubert. She also mentioned that Schubert’s inspiration was based on Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major, opus 20. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. My Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) is, like the Beethoven and the Schubert, in six movements. The instrumentation is, like the Schubert, scored for Bb clarinet, bassoon, horn in F, string quartet and contrabass. 1. Prelude … Moderato; Scherzo … Prestissimo! 2. Arioso … Allegro con moto 3. By bringing the key down a fifth, the showier, more technically demanding aspects of the piece are eliminated, thus allowing access to the intermediate level player, while still remaining an enjoyable selection for professional players. In addition, I feel the lower key enables both the listener and the performer to absorb the deeply resonant and meditative qualities of the cello.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534346). David Hurd was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 27 January 1950. Prior to his under-graduate studies at Oberlin College, he attended both the High School of Music and Art and the Juilliard School. Upon graduation from Oberlin in 1971 (Mus.B.), he was appointed Assistant Organist of Trinity Parish in lower Manhattan where he served under the direction of Larry King. He was appointed to the faculty of Duke University in 1972 concurrent with graduate studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In 1973 he returned to New York as Organist and Music Director at the Chapel of the Intercession, a position he retained until 1978 when he was named Composer in Residence for a season. In 1976 he was appointed to the faculty of The General Theological Seminary in New York City where he is presently Professor of Church Music and Organist. In addition, has served as Director of Music at All Saints Church, New York City, from 1985 to 1997 and is currently Director of Music at The Church of the Holy Apostles. In 1977 he was awarded first prizes both in organ playing and in improvisation at the International Congress of Organists. He has concertized throughout North America since that time under the representation of Phillip Truckenbrod. He has performed both at National and Regional Conventions of the American Guild of Organists. In 1981 he was invited to perform at the Internationaal Orgelfestival Haarlem, meeting in Gouda, the Netherlands, during which he received the diploma for improvisation of the Stichting Internationaal Orgelconcours. His principal organ teachers were Bronson Ragan, Garth Peacock, and Arthur Poister. In 2009, Dr. Hurd was named the 15th Distinguished Composer of the American Organ Guild. Other composers who have received this award include Virgil Thomson, Ned Rorem, Daniel Pinkham, Conrad Susa, William Bolcom and Dominick Argento. Dr. Hurd will be honored at a special concert during the 2010 AGO convention which will feature a newly commissioned work. He has received many commissions for choral, organ, and instrumental works, and has composed much liturgical music. Among his published works are organ pieces, choral works and many original hymn settings. His liturgical compositions and arrangements are also found in several major hymnals. He served on the Standing Commission on Church Music of the Episcopal Church from 1976 to 1985. He has been a visiting lecturer at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and a visiting professor at the Yale School of Music. In 1987 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa, by the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. The following year he received two honorary degrees; the Doctor of Sacred Music from The Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, California, and the Doctor of Humane Letters from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.
