Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) is a song performed and co-written by American singer-songwriter Christopher Cross, which was the main theme for the 1981 film Arthur starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli. The song won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1981.[1] In the US, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Hot Adult Contemporary charts during October 1981, remaining at the top on the Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks. Overseas, it also went to number one on the VG-lista chart in Norway and was a top-ten hit in several other countries. The song became the second and last American number-one hit by Christopher Cross.[2] It was included as a bonus track only on the CD and cassette versions of his second album, Another Page, released in 1983.

Not very long or difficult to play, but compositionally clever and emotionally moving.Duration: 0m52sComposer's Notes:In college, Kelly Morse knew that I often created melodies by using the letters of a person's name (continuing the letters of the alphabet up the scale past the letter g), and he asked me to play the theme that would be created by using the letters of HIS name; at the time, I was a bit stumped to make it sound interesting: d-e-e-e-d-f-a-d-e-e Years later, he reminded me that he'd been disappointed that his name didn't make for a good melody -- and I decided that I had to be a good enough composer to make it work.Here is the result.

Sweet, harmonically simple, and distinct, with a haunting melody.From the composer:Very likely my second composition ever, composed in my early teens with my sister Margie in mind. I've always thought of it as her theme, even though there has never been a version of it in print until now. I guess after I continued composing more and more, I eventually thought this piece was too simplistic to share in its original format. I did record a more upbeat version, Strollin' with B, with synthesized instruments, but this is how I tend to think of the piece: in its original, tender, beautiful, graceful form.

He attended All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland and served as first clarinetist in bands led by John Philip Sousa and Arthur Pryor. Levy led the foreign orchestrating department for Victor Records – which was the first music company to produce the disc record – and was a founder of Belwin Music. Levy compiled a series of photoplay cues for piano that was published in H.S. Gordon’s 1914 Motion Picture Collection. He also wrote songs, the most famous of which was That Naughty Waltz. Sol Paul Levy died in New York in 1920. During the Silent Film Era (1896-1936), showings usually featured live music, which helped to provide dramatic and emotional cues for the audience. The first public silent film shown in 1895 was accompanied by a guitarist. Soon after, films were commonly accompanied by either a pianist, organist, or chamber orchestra. Accompanists often improvised or compiled music from the classical, theatrical or popular repertories using a cue sheet identifying the effects or moods to be conveyed. While some films produced full scores or detailed cue sheets containing excerpts of music unique to that film, a repertoire of generic music soon developed to provide accompanists with music that they could adapt as needed. With titles such as Dramatic Conflict, Dramatic Tension, Heavy Mysterioso, and Weird Oriental Theme, Sol Paul Levy’s scores clearly served this purpose. The Vampire: A Dramatic Theme, composed in 1917, could have been easily adapted to any of the more than twenty films about vampires that appeared between 1909 and 1930. The score exists in three versions: one for small orchestra with piano conductor, one for chamber orchestra without piano, and one for chamber orchestra without timpani. Instruments included piano, flute, clarinet, two cornets, trombone, two timpani, two violins, viola, cello, and bass. Despite being composed for small orchestra, the piece, composed in A minor, is well suited to the guitar once instrumental and octave doublings are removed. While a solo guitar cannot produce the power and volume of a chamber orchestra, it certainly can evoke the intended mood. Except in a few instances owing to the limitations of the guitar, all original dynamic markings have been retained. All fingerings, of course, are editorial. When composer Jerry Goldsmith was asked to write the score for MacArthur, people were surprised that he accepted the project because they wondered what he would have left to say, musically, after Patton. Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“. Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!
