Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring one solo cello passage, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, Snowy Mountains, is set in the alpine region of Australia, in Thredbo in the state of NSW, which is a popular ski resort. The scene opens with the majesty and austerity of the alpine mountains. Then, the cold sets the teeth chattering and the feet stamping with a paraphrase from Vivaldi's Winter from The Four Seasons but which transforms into the iconic Australian song, Waltzing Matilda. From there, fun is had in the snow followed by the journey up the ski lift to the top of the ski fields. Then, of course, there is the exhilarating ski journey down the mountain! After more fun in the snow, the day ends, everybody tired but happy!

Ping & Peal is a piece for finger cymbals and tape that I wrote for Creativity November--an extended version of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) that I participate in with several friends from grad school. The rules are simple: Pick a creative project. Work starts on the first of November and must be completed by the third of December. Projects have to be started and finished within that time frame. Status updates are over doughnuts at 10 PM on Tuesday nights. Anyone who doesn't finish their project owes the rest of the participants a cake.I like to use this time to try out new tools and new techniques, and in 2018 I chose to play with some notational techniques I started using in Austerity. The tape part is notated in the sheet music much like it appears on computer--as a collection of waveforms showing volume across time. Both the live sounds and the pre-recorded sounds, with few exceptions, come from a pair of finger cymbals, which are struck together, dampened, scraped, and subjected to a number of digital manipulations. Italian.My collection of laude has its origins in the world of early music, being based in spirit and feeling on the unaccompanied vocal “laude†found in a collection from 13th century Cortona. The people who originally sang such things - the ‘laudesi’ - banded together in confraternities but were not usually associated with any particular church and this music was not part of any liturgy. The first laude that I wrote were, like the mediaeval originals, for unaccompanied voice - for the soprano Anna Maria Friman. I then wrote some for two voices, adding the tenor John Potter, and some for three sopranos, the Trio Mediaeval. Gradually I added more for other vocal combinations as well as some with instrumental accompaniment. But I do return from time to time to the ‘purer’ solo or duo lauda. In 2006 I wrote a number of pieces for the Estonian National Men’s Choir (RAM) chiefly through my friendship and collaborations with its conductor Kaspars Putnins who, as well as conducting the Latvian Radio Choir, was director of RAM. I wrote two laude for them. Lauda 31 was completely new, while Lauda 32 is a new version of Lauda 19 “Omne homoâ€. Both make full use of the special quality of the Estonian choir and Lauda 32 in particular deliberately aims to have the sound of singers in a Russian Orthodox tradition.Whatever vocal approach I use for setting lauda texts, I treat them with great respect in relation to the original lauda. I adhere as far as possible to the same number of notes to a syllable that are in the mediaeval versions, frequently following the melodic contours and sometimes quoting individual phrases. I still relish the challenge of writing vocal music which is quite exposed, and which retains something of the austerity of the original. Gavin Bryars (2012).

It was in the process of preparing the publication of the works of Demersseman and of Ali Ben Sou Alle that suggested to me the idea of the typical 19th century practice of the Fantasy and Variations on well-known themes.The saxophone lends itself perfectly for this stylistic exercise. I therefore chose to write for this instrument, which the piano supports seriously.My republican roots (in the French sense) suggested that I set several revolutionary songs from 1789. I therefore chose the emblematic “ Ah ça ira ! â€, after having seen the famous sequence of “Si Versailles l’était conté†where Piaf sings this song hanging of the grill of the Palace of Versailles, in the superbe version by Jean Françaix.I added at the end “ La Carmagnole †and the famous “ Il pleut bergère †a foreshadowing of the destiny of Marie-Antoinette who is said to have enjoyed singing this air. One will find, a bit hidden, a short citation of a work for organ by Bach.This isn’t a pastiche but rather a sort of modern update to this form in respecting its codes, its forms of this type of work which disappeared temporarily due to forced musical austerity.

In 2001, Gavin Bryars began writing a number of pieces based on a large collection of 13th century semi-religious songs, known as 'Lauda', which would have been sung outside churches and in other public places. To date, Bryars has written around 40 of his own 'laude' for a variety of instrumentations including solo voice, voices and ensemble and even choir. Lauda (con sordino) was written in 2002 as a purely instrumental version and although it has been reinvented for the present day, it retains the purity and austerity of the original style. This is a stunningly beautiful work and a perfect introduction to the sound world of Gavin Bryars.

Tre Laude Dolce for solo cello is the second of these to be released as a Schott Edition publication and follows Bryars' Lauda (con sordino) originally for cello and piano. Based on the same principals as the composer's vocal laude and as always, attempting to retain the purity and austerity of the original form, Tre Laude Dolce is characterised by long phrases and open structures. a beautiful work perfect for any good cellist.
