Johann Sebastian Bach wrote his Harpsichord Concerto no. 2 in E, BWV 1053 in 1738, and it was published in 1854 in Leipzig by C.F. Peters. This concerto is thought to be based on a concerto for a wind instrument, probably oboe or oboe d'amore, and from stylistic considerations, it may have dated from Bach's time in Leipzig. It exists, like BWV 1052, in a later transcription in his cantatas Gott soll allein mein Herze haben, BWV 169, and Ich geh und Suche mit Verlangen, BWV 49, from which further inferences can be made about the original concerto. Bach changed his method of arrangement with this work, significantly altering the ripieno parts from the original concerto for the first time, limiting much more to the tutti sections. The lower string parts were much reduced in scope, allowing the harpsichord bass to be more prominent, and the upper strings were likewise modified to allow the harpsichord to be at the forefront of the texture. A standard rendition of the piece lasts 19 minutes. The work calls for two violins, a viola, and a continuo section, besides the solo harpsichord.

Bach in his Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Secondly, we have the arrangement introduced by the Choirmaster Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke in 1783 that introduces a controversial added measure designed to intensify the harmony in measure 27. Both versions employ the melody that Charles Gounod provided as an overlay to the Bach harmony. In either case, the convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide options for extended performance. The duration with the repeat runs about 4:50. This arrangement features the controversial Schwencke measure (ms. 27) that was originally introduced in 1783 by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke.

Little is known for certain about his childhood, other than that he was an exceptionally talented performer, attracting the attention of Hermann Karl von Keyserlingk, the Russian ambassador to Saxony, around 1737. Goldberg was reported to have studied with both J.S. Bach and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, J.S. Bach’s eldest son, though the periods of study are not known; Goldberg may have studied with J.S. This is a new transcription for piano of the third movement (Largo e spiccato) of J.S. Bach's Concerto in D minor, BWV 596. Bach's original organ concerto was itself a transcription of Vivaldi's Concerto in D minor for two violins and obbligato violoncello (RV 565, Op.3 No. 11). It has been arranged to bring out the best qualities of this hauntingly beautiful melody.
