Each voice gets a solo, and there are some nice harmonies between the two voices. My husband and I play this for my mom on St. Patrick's Day and it moves her to tears. It's in the key of F for an easy key and the range is easy as well. .

Grainger’s arrangement of the Scottish song The Caledonian Hunt’s Delight became Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon. The river Doon flows gracefully between the Loch Doon and the Firth of Clyde in Stirlingshire, Scotland. It was inspired by Robert Burns poem, The Banks of Doon, written in 1783.The piece was originally scored in 1903 for a chorus of women’s unison voices, accompanied by men’s voices, whistlers, and harmonium or organ at will. Commissioned by The Association for Music in International Schools AMIS. Premiered in Bangkok, Thailand in January 2011, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos. Program Notes: The image of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes, kept reappearing in my mind as the main focus for this piece. According to myth, the islands of Hawaii owe their existence to Pele who ran away from her jealous sister, a sea goddess, to these tiny islands. Her sister sent tidal waves and Pele answered by sending fiery lava into the ocean, making new land as it cooled. The spirit of Pele lives on in the craters of the volcano, watching over the islands, reminding us that fiery eruptions and emotional upheavals are followed by new life and change. Pele, unpredictable and powerful, makes her entrance with a loud bang of brass and percussion, followed by the entire ensemble joining in. As the trumpets trail off, words from the ancient Hawaiian chant E Pele, E Pele are heard moving between each section in contrasting rhythms, as the tuba and low brass unfold the main theme. This chant is performed in Hawaiian culture accompanied by hula kahiko, an ancient style of hula dancing. The vibraphone plays a tranquil melody reminiscent of a Hawaiian wind chime softly blowing in the wind. The congas and rainstick evokes a tribal element. The piece is meant to juxtapose the multi-faceted natures of Pele. Syncopated rhythms in the winds paired with big brass and percussion represent her passion and violent temper. The playful, quiet, lingering sections led by the flute and vibraphone represent her irresistible and enchanting mystery as she creates new land and the living things that inhabit these magnificent islands. Considered a sea chanty, the song was passed on orally by singers on clipper ships. The variations in lyrics that have been collected demonstrate how various singers over the decades have altered the song (consciously or unconsciously). ♫ This arrangement is based on lyrics that were collected prior to 1860 and published in Sea Songs and Shanties by W. B. Whall (1910). There are evidently 2 rivers mentioned in this song, the Shenandoah and the Missouri. The song tells a love story between an impetuous trader and a Shenandoah Valley Native American princess. As the trader heads for the Missouri River, he looks back longingly to the home of the princess. ♫ I have used the Dorian Mode to suggest Native American elements in the story line. The YouTube video features photos of both the Shenandoah River and the Missouri River. ♫ The white man loved the Indian maiden, Away you rolling river. With notions his canoe was laden. These three pieces (The Procession, Waltzing in the Rain and Tim's Dance) are presented here as a suite, but may of course be used individually. The instrumentation is flexible, allowing for various combinations of instruments, including Clarinet Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble and Brass Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble. All Clarinet and Bass Clarinet parts are below the break and all notes for all parts are kept within a comfortable range for Elementary Level performers. The melody is shared between Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, so that all players of these parts have important parts! The score is shown in concert pitch. Octave displacement occurs in some parts. Part 5 is Optional. Rhythmic values used: semibreve (whole note), dotted minim (dotted half-note), minim (half-note), crotchet (quarter-note), quavers (eighth-notes). Articulations/signs used: staccato, accent, slur, tie, repeat and pause. All three pieces are in Bb major (concert pitch), with no use of accidentals. Parts in this set: Part 1 (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Trumpet); Part 2 (Clarinet, Alto Sax, Trumpet); Part 3 (Clarinet, Tenor Sax, F Horn); Part 4 (Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Baritone Sax, Trombone/Euphonium); Part 5 (Clarinet / Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone, F Horn, Tuba); Glockenspiel; Cymbal & Triangle (Player 1) and Tambourine (Player 2); Snare Drum and Bass Drum. Less confident and/or early beginner players could also be included in the ensemble by using Part 5, as this part can be played using only the notes Bb and F (concert pitch). La instrumentacion es flexible, permitiendo asi varias combinaciones de instrumentos, incluyendo un cuarteto/quinteto/conjunto de clarinete, cuarteto/quinteto/conjunto de saxofón, cuarteto/quinteto/conjunto de metales. todas las partes de clarinete y clarinete metálico están por debajo del descanso y todas las notas para cada parte están mantenidas dentro de un rango confortable para ejecutantes de Nivel Elemental. La melodÃa se comparte entre las partes 1, 2, 3 y 4 de tal manera que todos los músicos tengan una parte importante. La partitura esta en tono de concierto.Hay algunas partes con desplazamiento de octavas. La parte 5 es opcional. Los valores rÃtmicos usados son; semibreve (entera), media con punto, media, cuarto de nota, octavos. Los octavos aparecen en grupos de 2 o de 4. Las articulaciones/signos usados son: staccato, acento, ligaduras, Calderón, repetición, pausa. Las tres piezas están en Bb mayor (tono concierto) sin uso de accidentales. Partes en este set : Parte I; falta, oboe, clarinete, alto sax, trompeta; Parte II: clarinete, alto sax, trompeta; Parte III: clarinete, saxofón tenor, corno francés; Parte IV: fagot, clarinete bajo, saxofón barÃtono, trombón/eufonio; Parte V: clarinete/clarinete bajo, saxofón tenor, corno frances, tuba, glockenspiel, triangulo y cÃmbalo (persona1), pandereta (persona 2), caja, bombo. Aquellos músicos que son principiantes o les falta confianza para tocar, tambien pueden ser incluidos en este ensamble usando la parte 5, ya que esta parte se puede usar solo tocando las notas Bb y F (en tono de concierto).

Kelly Middle School Band in Springdale, Arkansas, which happens to be the school where my life in band began.This is a slow, melodic piece, working to develop phrasing and musical expression. Though the flute has occasional 2 note chords, only the clarinet and trumpet have divided parts. It calls for 8 percussionists but could be played by 7 if needed (and if you have a coordinated player to jump quickly between suspended cymbal and crash cymbals).
