Nigel Williams #1049937. Published by Nigel Williams (A0.1472235). Originally written for piano and string orchestra in memory of my brother Steve, and performed in Tauranga NZ in March 2023, I have re-scored Be Still for piano quintet (piano with string quartet). This quintet version was premiered by the composer in July 2024. The music starts with the piano, with the viola leading the strings in after eight bars. The music is gentle, peaceful and tranquil and suited to any occasion where peacefulness and serenity are required. Some bowing markings have been included as a guide. The download includes the full score (24 pages), the four individual string parts (4 pages), and the piano score (5 pages). See also Be Still for piano and string orchestra, available for download.

This entertaining and playful cakewalk, forerunner of ragtime style, is by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Nathaniel Dett who studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. Scored for two trumpets in B-flat (with alternate C trumpet parts), horn (with flugelhorn substitute), trombone (with treble clef euphonium substitute) and tuba, the arrangement has wide audience appeal and is very accessible for less experienced players. Early 20th century Canadian-American composer, conductor and pianist Robert Nathaniel Dett's Listen to the Lambs choral anthem combines his neo-romantic style and advocacy for spirituals in this engaging arrangement for brass quintet. Despite his short life, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works (mainly lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of piano and chamber music. His father gave him his first violin lessons and his elder brother gave him piano lessons, but Schubert soon exceeded their abilities.
