Right hand plays the melody and left hand accompanies in broken arpeggios. Eighth-notes, dotted quarter-notes, quarter-notes, half-notes, dotted half-notes and whole notes.Technique: Fingering crossing over and under the thumb is introduced. Sharps and flats are mixed. There are also level 1, 2, and 4 arrangements of this piece available. History: This arrangement provides a long-awaited opportunity to introduce the very youngest pianist to melodies composed by women in the time period usually associated with the music of Brahms or Tchaikovsky. Amy Beach was the best-known woman composer of her time and the first in the United States. She was the first American woman to write a symphony and was a well-respected pianist in her time. Beach Spring is an old American hymn-tune usually attributed to B. F. White, the co-editor of the music collection The Sacred Harp. Among the hymns that use this tune are Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service and Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters. The melody of the tune itself is pentatonic though many harmonizations end up disguising this. This particular arrangement by Mark Lewis actually embraces the pentatonic aspects of the melody and extends them throughout the harmony as well, causing the piece to require a 10 bell ensemble which is rather unusual and easiest to realize with five players. The time signature also is modified throughout the piece, starting in 8/4, moving through 7/4, and ending up in 6/4 which is basically the 3/2 time signature usually associated with the tune. By feeling the whole piece in variations of a Three Pattern the tempo marking of quarter-note = 200 is actually much more reasonable than it would first appear.

Martin Lass is an Australian violinist, composer, arranger, and teacher. He is most well known for his performance career as a classical crossover and popular music artist with 11 CD recordings, numerous awards and accolades, and performances with the likes of Luciano Pavorotti, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Baez. Before this, he was a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. When he is not spending time with his wife of 46 years, his three middle-aged children, and his two grandchildren, he spends his time and energy teaching, writing, arranging, and performing.Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring a few cello passages, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, “A Day at the Beach,†is set in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in QLD. On a perfect summer day, one heads for the beach where fun and games, swimming, surfing, sun-baking, a picnic, and more games are the order of the day before heading home, full of sand, sun, food, and tired satisfaction.

BEACH SPRING is a hymn tune attributed to Benjamin Franklin White (1800-1879), co-editor of The Sacred Harp shape-note hymnal, where the tune was published in 1844. Paired there with a text beginning Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, it has served as accompaniment for various other hymn texts since.Although attributed to White, the pentatonic tune (comprising five notes — degrees 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the major scale) is likely of folk origin. It was commissioned by Dr. Kristen Tjornehoj, Conductor of the University of Wisconsin at River Falls Symphony Band in remembrance of Kaye Bird, who passed away in 2016 as a resident of River Falls and a member of the community for several years. Kaye Bird was also a resident of Indiana, PA for 37 years and was a well respected teacher in the public schools there. Set Free to go Home was premiered by the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Symphony Band at Fisher Auditorium on February 6, 2020, conducted by Dr. Jason Worzbyt. It is agrade 3 band piece with a duration of five minutes. It is published by Musica Nova USA and availableon sheetmusicplus.com and jwpepper.com.Performance Notes: Set Free to go Home was composed with flexible instrumentation in mind.There are several instruments listed in the score that would enhance the piece (such as harp, oboes,double bass, ect.) but are not necessary to convey a successful performance. For example, if there are not five percussionists available, the piece may be played by less performers with the use of a drumkit, with one person playing two or more parts. This composition can sound very good whether thereare fifteen players or a band with one hundred players.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. My arrangement will suit a mixed ability ensemble from early intermediate to intermediate. Guitar 4 has the bottom string tuned down to D.I've arranged this in compound time instead of swing rhythm, and I've included triplet dotted crotchets (¼ notes) instead of three plain crotchets, so that the rhythm is easy to read.The piece finishes with a final chord instead of a fade to nothing, as it usually works better in concert. But if you have a conductor who can help with the fade, you could carry on playing the repeating section at the end until the sound has vanished.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts.
