It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they werenâ€™t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on â€˜God save the Kingâ€™, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to â€˜show the English what a blessing they haveâ€™ with that tune. We donâ€™t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (â€˜Heil dir im Siegerkranzâ€™).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

I have tried as far as possible to arranage the piece as though Beethoven would have written it. The horn is in Ab alto and I have tried as far as possible to use the notes of the natural horn.(This works better in some of the variations. I have used Ab basso for variation III. A horn in F part is also included. Variation 2:I have taken some liberties in that the constant syncopation in the R.H.piano part would not sit well on wind instruments, so I have retained Beethoven's harmonies and maintained the feel of the piece. Variation 3 is in Ab minor (7 flats) so may well present some difficulties for the players playing in an unfamiliar key!. The theme and othe variations are more playable.

The virtuoso 24 variations on a theme by the Mainz court Kapellmeister Vincenzo Righini were the first of Beethovenâ€™s works to be published by Schott in 1791 (plate number 145). The theme comes from the collection â€˜XII Ariette Italianeâ€™ for voice and piano (plate number 92), published by Schott in 1788. The collaboration with Beethoven did not continue until around 35 years later with the operas 121b to 128 and 131 (including the Missa solemnis and the 9th Symphony). Beethovenâ€™s last words, according to Anton Schindler, also connected Beethoven with the publishing house (â€˜Too bad, too lateâ€™): the delivery of the Rhein wine, ordered from Schott following his doctorâ€™s advice, only reached him on his deathbed.

Â The first bagatelle in particular is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.The Bagatelle No. 2 of Op. 33 follows a simple ternary form, with a lively and playful Scherzo character. The piece is in the key of C major and is written in 2/4 time signature. The A section is characterized by a catchy and rhythmic melody that is repeated twice, with slight variations in the second repetition. This is a bloody masterpiece - it's Op.120, yet it's not nearly as well known as the Grosse Fuge Op.133, which is perhaps, slightly thornier to digest at one (or 1000) hearings. This piece, in keeping with the general tone of the whole hour-long Diabelli Variations, is plainly satirical, in fact it's frequently funny. First the Fugue and then the Minuet, lampoon (by then old) conventions ruthlessly. Reason for the ridicule? Beethoven found Diabelli irritating first, and his Theme risible second. The first reason was probably enough.Enjoy!
