If you've worked with them, you know that they love heartache and broken relationships, so this song definitely delivers. I kept this one very simple and it was just fun. Students really like and find accessible the easy alto harmonies throughout. There's definitely more of an opportunity to learn about dynamics and have a powerful moment in this piece than in most pop music, but make sure you have a big drop before the third verse - students love the feeling it gives them. The piece is also notated in cut time with swung eighths, so there are opportunities to teach some more complicated metric principles as well, though you can also easily ignore those details and keep it simple for a young group. The piano part is kept very simple throughout.

An Open World, When I Land and And the Wind are three settings of poems from Fletcher LaVallee Bartholomew's collection entitled And the Wind: Gnostic Poems 1945 - 1979. When I Land is duration ca. 5 minutes. Minneapolis native Fletcher Bartholomew spent most of his life in aviation, beginning with a childhood flight in a Curtis Robin in 1929. His work in aviation started with a job as an inspector in an aircraft factory. He went on to become a test pilot in World War II, serving at the South India Air Depot at Bangalore, India. He often spoke later of his experience on the ship to India and the people he met travelling around the subcontinent. He subsequently worked in aviation in Munich, Germany, and in Lima, Peru, before he concluded his career working in airport planning and management. There are optional percussion parts to be added at the discretion of the ensemble, however even without percussion the ensemble will sound full (the percussion acts as an ornament). Difficulty: Intermediate-advanced - advanced (best-suited for advanced student ensembles) --- Performance Notes: • Approximate length: 3:30 minutes • 1st Violins: In m. 1, trill a half step from a D♠to a D♮ • 2nd Violins:  - At m. 42, divide players by 3, with 2 players playing line A and the remaining player playing line B  - At m. 72-75, emphasize the E♠in the div. • Snare Drum: The buzz roll needs to be quieter than how it is played in the midi recording (*see YouTube link ↓) History: The Olga-Polka itself owed its creation to a Russian royal wedding which took place in St. Petersburg on 28 August 1857. On that day, amid accompanying splendour, the music-loving Grand Duke Michail Nikolaievich (1832-1909), youngest brother of Tsar Alexander II, married Princess Caecilie of Baden (1839-91), daughter of Archduke Leopold of Baden. Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden. It was under this title, too, that Johann himself first conducted the work in Vienna at a concert in the Volksgarten on 1 November 1857, shortly after his return from Russia. Reporting on this event, the Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (3.11.1857) observed: The 'Olga-Polka' is a most delightful, fragrant musical bouquet, full of fine, gracious rhythms. The chief artisan of the Tabernacle, Bezalel was filled with the Holy Spirit in the Sinai desert. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit was not permanent until Pentecost, but the filling is seen throughout the pages of Scripture. ♫The filling of the Holy Spirit ought not be connected with one specific activity (such as the gift of tongues) but any activity that the Holy Spirit can use to accomplish bringing glory to God. Micah was filled with the Spirit of God when he prophesied against the leadership of Samaria and Jerusalem. Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit as he spoke to the pilgrims at Pentecost. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit as she greeted Mary, and of course Bezalel as he received knowledge and guidance to design and create the Tabernacle. ♫ I wrote this song in Haiti while meditating in Scripture and thinking about ministry. This song is short because I realized that it was better suited as a warmup for ministry than a congregational worship song. Whether on a concert stage or a church platform, it is so easy to get caught up during a performance and get sidetracked, concentrating on the the praise, recognition, acceptance from the audience that singing, playing and instrument, or preaching can bring. I Get Along Without You Very Well is a popular song composed by Hoagy Carmichael in 1939, with lyrics based on a poem written by Jane Brown Thompson, and the main melodic theme on the Fantaisie-Impromptu in C sharp minor, Op 66, by Frédéric Chopin. Thompson's identity as the author of the poem was for many years unknown, she died the night before the song was introduced on radio by Dick Powell. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in many of our arrangements. We also implemented some pretty cool left-hand fills which we think you will like!

Based on Grieg's famous orchestral movement from 'Peer Gynt Suite no.1', this arrangement is a contemporary twist on an old classic and designed to appeal to young audiences and musicians. It was originally written for Sæbø Skulemusikklag, Norway, for World Brass Day 2017. The performance was recorded as representation of Norwegian culture and uploaded to Youtube in a shared playlist alongside others from around the globe*. The arrangement begins in a similar creepy manner to the original, tip-toeing in and gradually building up to a frightening frenzy. Something of a surprise is in store for the audience after a familiar opening however; a dubstep/drum n bass twist drops in before the melody rejoins in a new fashion, leading on to solo moments for drum kit and timpani. Elements of the original orchestration are again infused into the repeated refrain to intensify the music towards a dramatic final close.Note to conductors:Difficult solo tuba parts are a feature, but a simplified version is also supplied for less advanced players.The soprano cornet, 2nd horn and 2nd baritone parts are supplementary and can be omitted without problem. Beginner level (aspirant) parts are provided, written in B and E flat as 'Trolls' so that newer band members can join in. *this arrangement has been edited since that performance for publication.

Their fifth UK No. 1, it topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks. The song also reached the Top 10 in numerous other countries.Sting wrote the song in 1982 in the aftermath of his separation from Frances Tomelty and the beginning of his relationship with Trudie Styler. Their split was controversial. As The Independent reported in 2006, The problem was, he was already married – to actress Frances Tomelty, who just happened to be Trudie's best friend. A musical score or lead sheet was intended to be interpreted for style and tempo, and while some of those interpretations may not necessarily have been wrong, quite often they weren't always what the author intended, but face it, it's just plain hard to write music exactly in the way that the song is intended to be sung. Enter the computer age, and the ability for performers to understand that the interval of a note is an absolute time interval which puts the natural rhythm, or beat, of a musical arrangement at about 25% faster than a beat per second, which is why I arrange music to be performed at ~ 80 BPM, which means, approximately 80 beats per minute. That is not etched in stone, but it does represent the comfort zone to which the performer should subscribe when singing or playing a song. Contemporary jazz singers are, in my opinion, therefore obligated to re-arrange the songs that they intend to record, to avoid the embarrassment of getting it wrong. It happens. Timing is of the essence. Many of those old jazz classics are well served with a rewrite for the contemporary artist.The Nearness of You was written in 1938 by Hoagy Carmichael, with lyrics by Ned Washington, and was performed in the 1938 Paramount movie, Romance in the Dark, by Gladys Swarthout of the Metropolitan Opera. It has been recorded numerous times over the years, and it maintains its popularity today. The guitar chording for this arrangement is targeted toward the experienced and more advanced players, but I encourage the experienced intermediate level player to take up the challenge of learning to play this song. It will be a rewarding experience.
