This is a funky 2 beat built on double (24 bar) blues. It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose. Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

In these 112 measures for the twinning of Istanbul-Algeciras I have wanted to incorporate concepts from both parties, with the respect that the composition of Don Joan Manuel Serrat deserves in which in 1970 he sang “Mare Nostrum†(Nostrum mare more correctly in Latin classic, being one of the popular anthems of Spain and therefore a cultural heritage. Another note run follows with an ascending and descending run ending the firstsection with a flamenco flourish. ?Two Score? is a dazzling piece of harmonyand rhythm your friends, as well as in a concert hall, will applaud with enthusiasm leaving you very proud. A comment from another guitarist attending one of my concerts said about ?Two Score,?I wish I wrote that!? The recording of "Two Score" has synth strings and wind chimes. Numbers I and II are titled 'Moving Between' and 'Breathing' respectively and all three are available on this site. Any one of these may be performed separately or the three movements can be played as a set. On occasions the textures of 'Drama' hark back to those heard in 'Moving Between', however in the latter there is transitional material between textures, be they melodic or chordal. Here, transitions are absent andcontrasts are starker, being produced by opposites such as slow and fast speeds, symmetrical and asymmetrical harmonies, porous and thick textures and sound and noise.

Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Therefore, it is invented–out of a literal need to survive–pure, genuine happiness.Future Performances: If you are interested in performing this work, please e-mail me.ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings , with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Published by Piper Publications (A0.811668). Gordon wrote the Hymn Symphony for the Hereford String Orchestra in 1977. They gave the first performance in Hereford and also performed it at Gordon’s memorial service in 2001. The symphony is composed in the Classical style, the themes being mostly well-known hymn tunes. The rest are Dale originals which just sound as if they should be hymn tunes. (People have made thorough searches without success.) There are four movements and the piece lasts about twenty minutes. Gordon was a good violinist. He played in the CBSO where he also doubled as their solo alto saxophone player when required. He was a very popular violin teacher. He wrote pieces for his pupils from beginners to advanced much of which can be found on the Piper Publications web site.
