These twelve short pieces for piano were inspired by the sounds from my childhood, namely the musical themes from games played on eight-bit consoles like Nintendo. Whether or not you share such memories, I’m confident we can find common ground here; each piece attempts to see and hear the world from a child’s imaginative, wonder-filled perspective. Dr. Ben Dockery is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at Tennessee Wesleyan University. There he teaches courses related to music theory, ear training, piano, and orchestration and arranging. After receiving degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and DePaul University, he completed his D.M.A. from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 2012. Dr. Dockery began teaching piano in 1999 and has taught and performed music ever since. Dr. Dockery has composed and arranged for piano, small jazz ensemble, and jazz big band. He has performed on numerous recordings with noted musicians such as Phil Woods, the DePaul Big Band, the late Zim Ngquwana, the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, and others. In addition to writing the book Conceptualizing the Jazz Piano Trio, Dr. Dockery has written for Chicago Jazz Magazine and continues to publish articles, interviews, compositions, and more at his website www.bendockery.com. He maintains an active performance career playing in regional venues and serves as organist for Inskip Baptist Church.

This intermediate level piece for piano (2 min, 45 sec) is the third meditation in a volume of twelve. Its recurring melodic and rhythmic motif unifies the composition through contrasting moments of light and darkness. Throughout the harmonic progression, there is an emphasis on the subdominant--always a relaxation of tonality. And it is this plagal sound that is heard last, suggesting a resting place, a moment's peace on an unfinished journey.The performer should be aware of the left-hand's missing eighth-note rest on the down-beat of nearly every measure. It was omitted to avoid a graphic collision. Therefore, the higher octaves are all played on the ands of each beat. Also, notice that in measures 13-14 and other similar places the right-hand plays higher voiced notes in the bass clef. Be careful not to over-emphasize the left-hand ostinato figure, especially the notes played with the thumb. They should be the softest sounds throughought. This early intermediate solo piano piece (3:30) begins sotto voce, a single voice, but soon builds. The contemplative quality is achieved, in part, by rubato phrasing and generous pedal throughout. Ominous, tragic, and heroic are all accurate descriptors. Performers should not count the beats metronomically. Rather, each end of phrase should be held and released like a breath: imprecise but with a natural flow. This intermediate composition for solo piano (3 minutes) is the ninth in a series of twelve meditations. Its pensive, subtle character is achieved through lush, jazz-inspired harmonies which carefully balance light and shadows. The middle section has a change in mood, evoking the spirit of 1960s spy-thriller movie scores, ala James Bond. Unlike Evan's composition, this meditation moves through various key centers, exploring contrasting iterations of the simple rhythmic motif that underlies the entire work.The performer should use pedal throughout. The section located at the key change can be played a bit faster than the opening passage. Elegy is an intermediate piece for piano (2 min. 30 sec.). Its dark cerebral character is accomplished through lush, sometimes dissonant, sonorities, heavy use of sustain pedal, and a subdued dynamic level through most of the composition. It's most distinguishing feature is also its greatest performance challenge: a primary melody in the tenor or highest left-hand voice. Care must be taken to bring out the melody while taming the competing voices elsewhere. More rubato should be used than what the playback recording can demonstrate. This meditation for piano was written after hearing sad news from a family friend. Mournful regret, poignant memories, and a desire for peace all permeate this simple composition.Throughout, the left hand is required to play chord voicings containing 10th intervals. Smaller hands will need to roll these. It is important to bring out the primary melody in the higher voice of the right hand despite the sometimes thick texture. The slow tempo will be difficult for some students, especially when fermatas, accelerandos, and ritardandos are added. This fast angular piano piece (1 min. 5 sec) is the tenth in a series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the soundtracks of early 90s video game systems like Nintendo. This composition captures the robotic, computerized quality that was common with many of the 8-bit soundtracks. Although composers were limited to writing thin textures, they often took advantage of the computer's ability to play virtuosic passages that would be nearly unimaginable for a living performer. The texture of this piece is almost entirely monophonic. The velocity of the 16th notes creates the impression of harmony in the same way virtuosic blue-grass flat-picking guitarist can. The greatest challenge to the performer is getting the alternating hands coordinated. Fingerings are important, but more so is deciding which hand to play specific melodic passages. Where these spots seemed most precarious, I provided suggestions. This fun, atmospheric piece for piano was written late at night. Its use of exotic harmony (chromatic mediants, slash-chords, upper extensions) creates a rich, dark palate over which a haunting melody sings. On the first page, the performer must sometimes grab notes with the LH thumb in chords that appear to be played by the RH. The student must also take care on the second page to observe the cross-overs with the left-hand. The effect is of have three hands at the piano. Pedal is used throughout. The amount of less-conventional roles between hands makes this piece good technique-building repertoire. This short piece (1 min, 50 sec) for piano is the fifth in my series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the theme music from early nineties video game systems like Nintendo. The exotic sounds found throughout this arrangement would be described by many as sounding Spanish, Flamenco, or Egyptian. Impressions of these musical traditions are often characterized by the augmented second melodic interval and the use of modal rather than tonal organization. In the minds of many composers, these musical locales once represented the edge of western civilization or the known world. As such, they serve as creative jumping-off-points to imagine new worlds.The introduction section must be played with a far greater sense of rubato than the playback recording. At the new tempo, interpretation is more straight-forward. One technical and fingering challenge lies in the melodic figures in the right-hand that are frequently harmonized in parallel thirds. The bass ostinato pattern must be played steadily, but the dynamics should still be subservient to the primary melody in the right-hand. Follow my work at www.bendockery.com. This is the sixth installment in my series of piano impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the theme songs of early nineties video game systems like Nintendo. This quick piece (1 min. 10 sec.) is a fun, aggressive composition that sounds harder to play than it really is. The opening right-hand melody is easily played by fingering each four-note group with either 1,2,5 or 1,2,4. I originally discovered this pattern from an Art Tatum transcription book. This intermediate meditation for piano (3 min) is the fifth in a set of twelve. It is, perhaps, the most impressionist piece I've ever written. Its lush and sometimes dissonant harmonies contrast with the sparkles of light that glimmer throughout. A tender, sensitive interpretation is required.The form is a short five-part rondo: ABACA. The A sections alternate in compound meter and are entirely modal. Both the B and C section switch to common time and have chorale style textures. Be sure to prepare dissonances and resolve suspensions with proper voicing, balance, and a sense of rubato. Sustain pedal should be used throughout.Find more of my music at www.bendockery.com. This romantic waltz is the third in my series of impromptus inspired by sounds of childhood, namely the theme music from early nineties game systems like Nintendo. This short piece (app. 1 min. 20 sec.) is reminiscent of the occasional love themes from various games. Often the music was in stark contrast from the more rambunctious and syncopated main themes. Performers should approach this piece the same way they would a Chopin waltz: careful voicing of all parts but especially the primary melody, regular use of rubato, and a sensitive touch. The middle section has the left-hand playing the melody solo voce while the right-hand plays repetitive chords. Be sure to keep the right-hand accompaniment softer than the left in this section. This ninth impromptu (2 min. 45 sec.) in the series of pieces inspired by sounds of childhood, namely early 90s video game music, is a workout for the left hand. The right hand plays a continuous ostinato high above the rest of the arrangement. Care must be taken with the ostinato so that it emphasizes the dotted quarter note pulse and not the quarter note pulse. This can be difficult because of the note grouping of two instead of three eight-notes.The left-hand has the herculian task of juggling both the chordal accompaniment and primary melody. At all times the melody found in the middle stave must sound out above all other parts. I'm not sure where the inspiration for this composition came from. There was no specific game or memory that brought forth the muse. This intermediate piece for piano (2 min. 30 sec.) is the eighth in a series of impromptus inspired by sounds of childhood, namely themes from early 90s video game consoles like Nintendo. This composition is indicative of many of the bluesy soundtracks that also contain splashes of unexpected and quirky sonorities, giving it a bona fide unearthly quality. Think of a western shoot-out aboard an alien spaceship. Performers should keep the tempo rock-solid with no rubato. The syncopated ostinato bass pattern may take some getting used to at first, but it is essential to the entire arrangement. Many of the melodic figures have crescendos or decrescendos that are unconventional, e.g. a decrescendo under an ascending phrase. The middle section has a sixteenth note passage that should be fingered by alternating left and right hands as marked. Follow my work at www.bendockery.com. This is the eleventh piano piece (2 min. 20 sec.) in the series of impromptus inspired by sounds of childhood, namely the themes from early 90s game systems like Nintendo. Its A-section has a dark brooding character which has much to do with the highly unstable and dissonant Locrian mode in which it is written. This contrasts greatly with the triumphant and lyrical B-section which is predominantly written in the bright Lydian mode.Some performers will be initially challenged by the key signature of 6-flats. However, the repetitive nature of the left-hand ostinato will mitigate this challenge somewhat. The middle section needs to be played at a much slower tempo with a seamless transition accomplished through the ritard two-bars before the Maestoso marking. Follow my work at www.bendockery.com.
