Performance will also require purchase of the score.Program note from the score of Futility:Futility is a work embodying the struggle of a single musician to overcome the influence of commercialized music. We are inundated with commercial music and exposure to it is inescapable, thus it effects every musician in some form. Futility features an electronic track as accompaniment that was composed using commercially available audio loops and automatic beat generators-thus every sound the trombonist struggles against is both musically and literally commercial. The trombonist begins with some tentative entrances, moving towards an emulation of the electronic background. Performers are encouraged to act out the struggle in additional ways to those marked in the score.

Notes:I wrote most of Hiraeth during the week between getting called to hospital and my grandmother passing away. Titled after a Welsh concept, Hiraeth is a combination of homesickness, longing, and nostalgia for things, places, experiences, and people far away or unreachable. The general melancholy is broken by occasional moments of clarity and memory before finality sets in.Performance Notes:Be expressive with tempo and treat dynamics as a guide. Every passing and experience of grief is unique, so reflect that in performance. The final notes of measure 90 should be played with as much sting and bite as possible, being a sharp and sudden return to stark, but unchanged, reality.

Notes:Confrontation started as a purely academic work, striving to mimic the styles and forms of video game music. As such, it is intentionally repetitive and built so that individual repeats, larger sections, and the entire work can be looped to vary the length of performance. Performance Notes:Given the intended purpose of the piece, all repeats may be looped or omitted as the performing group wishes. The bass trombone part was written as such for the more aggressive timbre, but tuba could adequately cover the part.

Based off a map of an 11-circuit Troy Town, Child’s Labyrinth is an adult’s reflection on making their way through the labyrinth for the first time as a child. The child making their way through is unaware of entirety of labyrinth, while the adult reflecting is fully able to picture the overall map. The vibraphone pedal should be used to dampen at note changes but otherwise remain depressed. The oboe line should be played with a sporadic, childlike, playful curiosity.
