Big City Blues is a classic 12-bar blues piano solo featuring swung quavers and the 'blue notes' (lowered third, fifth and seventh) of the F major scale:A variation on the theme is presented in the second 12-bar blues section, in which you'll find the complete F blues scale in a descending pattern. To make these accidentals a little easier to coordinate, each hand moves separately.Big City Blues walks along steadily at a 'street wise swing' tempo of 100 bpm. Keep an eye out for the articulations, especially the staccato notes at the end of phrases, as these will help the piece to 'swing'.Learning to swing eighth note quaver rhythms is a skill that can take time to develop. Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. The Tag Blues is a theme from RIB that is used as connective tissue throughout the piece. It is most famously stated in the bass clarinet. It is know as the the Good Evening Friends theme. In this arrangement, it is lifted from RIB and presented as a stand-alone blues tune. There is a solo for piano and tenor sax, but any member of the band could step in and solo on its simple blues changes. Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles. Lead Tpt G5.

Full of sound effects such as the rumblings of the underground and an echoey sax down a deserted street (and do we hear Father Christmas somewhere in the distance?!) there are some really sleazy play offs between the sax and the guitar at the start and end (inspired perhaps 'Lily was Here' - Candy Dulfer and Dave Stewart). A really satisfying play! Piano solo as composed and performed by Kathleen Ryan on her CD Drivin‘!Kathleen’s notes: “This is a piece written by my car (my first car, the little red Toyota Tercel that considered itself to be a sports car). Back in the day, when my solo performing career was just getting off the ground, I hit the first composing dry spell of my entire life. As I am certainly not prone to exaggeration or wild mood swings, I naturally knew that never again would I compose another piece of music; and, needless to say, I found that a bit depressing.“While driving home from a gig, through the Iowa vastness, I was brooding over the loss of my fledgling career as a musician, when I noticed that my car’s odometer read 22122. I have always loved symmetric numbers! And I quickly realized that 22122 can be notes of the scale, say D-D-C-D-D. I listened to that, then saw that the odometer had turned over to 22123: D-D-C-D-E. The rest, as they say, is history. Oh, the total stops (rests) near the beginning are stop signs; you’ll find several in every midwestern town you are wishing you could speed through! I should also say (because my first car would like me to): whenever in this piece I was a bit stuck for music, all I had to do was get out on the open road and drive a bit and more music would come. Which is the other reason I say the piece was written by my car.“The music travels through a landscape that is totally unexpected, before having a mellow time in the big city that night. (Again, true to life on the road in my first car.)â€Advanced. Must be able to handle syncopation, large reaches, leaps—and perform with attitude.
