Here is the structure that was interpreted in a television program, but it can follow the forms of a jazz standard because it has A and B. Blue trip is a piece inspired by the African immigration that comes to the Canary Islands and travels hundreds of kilometers in old boats to reach Europe sooner or later. Thousands of lives have been lost in these years in those trips where the blue of the sea and the blue of the sky are the same border.Â

This work is a short waltz, written with the intent of sounding both pretty and soothing.As crazy as it may seem, inspiration for this piece came from its composer being passionately kissed by a girl at the cast party for a stage show, which he was in the cast of. She happened to be wearing blue face-paint at the time, and at one point, with her finger, she smeared some of it onto his face, leaving a faint blue stripe. Although the two of them did not end up dating, it still made for a beautiful piece of music.The Blue Stripe was performed (in a slightly different arrangement) for the first time ever by Binghamton University's Explorchestra, on 2 December 2017.

Big City Blues is a classic 12-bar blues piano solo featuring swung quavers and the 'blue notes' (lowered third, fifth and seventh) of the F major scale:A variation on the theme is presented in the second 12-bar blues section, in which you'll find the complete F blues scale in a descending pattern. To make these accidentals a little easier to coordinate, each hand moves separately.Big City Blues walks along steadily at a 'street wise swing' tempo of 100 bpm. Keep an eye out for the articulations, especially the staccato notes at the end of phrases, as these will help the piece to 'swing'.Learning to swing eighth note quaver rhythms is a skill that can take time to develop. Directors will have the opportunity to discuss modes, blues scales, and medieval plainchant. The piece mixes quasi-Dorian and blues scales and is grounded around the pitch concert D; therefore, the piece is largely in d-minor, a highly accessible key for emerging musicians. Students will have the opportunity to perform a variety of articulations, rhythms, accidentals and tempi. In addition, the numerous texture and mood changes will challenge the musicianship skills of the performers. The syncopated rhythms and quarter-note triplets will also provide for excellent teachable moments.The use of medieval modes in jazz certainly isn't a new concept as artists like Miles Davis utilized Dorian in So What, and John Coltrane as well in Impressions. Traditionally, modes have been found in instrumental music for centuries as seen in Sibelius' 6th Symphony, and more recently employed in wind band examples for students such as Elliot del Borgo's Dorian Rhapsody. Dorian Blues, however, is perhaps the first piece for young band that combines medieval chant on D Dorian with jazz-like rhythms and blue-notes.
