The Czech composer Antonín Dvoand#345;ák became the director of theNational Conservatory of Music in New York City in 1892 (a post he helduntil 1895). Whilst in North America, he became fascinated by Native Americanmusic and the African-American spirituals that he heard. After a commission in1893 from the New York Philharmonic, he wrote the Symphony No. 9 in E minor,"From the New World", also known as the ?New World? Symphony ? not onlyhis most famous symphony but one of the most popular symphonies of all time.
The second movement (Largo) features the famous cor anglaissolo, arranged here for solo piano. It was famously used in a British advert for the bread-brandHovis and was adapted into the spiritual-like song ?Goin? Home? by one ofDvoand#345;ák's pupils in 1922.
Dvoand#345;ák explained the Native-American influences in the symphonyin an article published by the New York Herald: ?I have not actually used anyof the [Native American] melodies. I have simply written original themesembodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes assubjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms,counterpoint, and orchestral colour.?
A recording of the ?New World? Symphony was taken along on theApollo 11 mission by Neil Armstrong in 1969.

The beauty is that the handbells/chimes play only chordal accompaniment to a flute or piano melody. There is so much flexibility in this piece. Our choir performed it with handchimes and flute. You can use any C instrument for the melody, even piano. I've also included a full piano accompaniment. The audio sample is a computer-generated handbell and piano combo. This piece will give your beginners confidence to tackle harder music and give them a feeling of pride to be able to participate in worship in such a musical way. Four pages total (p.1 = handbells/chimes; p.2 = flute or C instrument melody; pp. 3-4 = piano accompaniment and melody). Key of C, no key changes. Tempo is set by director dependent upon the ability of your players. Handbell part is for beginning players. Flute part is early intermediate. Piano part is early intermediate. Performance time: 50 seconds.

Horseshoe Curve was composed for the Altoona Area High School Orchestra, Kelly Detwiller, director. This composition is in three movements. The first movement, Man Versus Nature, is moderate and intense, paying tribute to the designers and laborers for the Horseshoe Curve project. It uses parts of three railroad songs, Drill, Ye Tarriers by Thomas Casey, I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, and Dinah. The introduction uses phrases from I’ve Been Working on the Railroad that are disguised by ending on a different note than the traditional song. The main body of the movement uses phrases of Drill, Ye Tarriers that are interrupted by phrases of the other two songs as well as original material by the composer. It developes in intensity as the movement progresses, but ends softly, suggesting the ongoing labor of the project. The second movement, Doorway to the West is a celebration of the completion of the project. It uses She’ll Be Coming ’Round the Mountain in fragments, in canon, and as a basis for a hoe down and a waltz variation. The celebration becomes wild at the end as all ideas come together at once. The third movement, Growth and Opportunity is slow and expansive in the beginning with a quicker section at the end. It depicts the growth of Altoona as a result of Horseshoe Curve. The initial idea that appears in the celli is expanded and developed, therefore evolving into a constant stream of new, but related, ideas.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Dubbed Wagner 2.0 by the Palm Beach Arts Paper, international award-winning Cuban American composer and filmmaker Sabrina Peña Young creates groundbreaking works like the animated virtual opera Libertaria and her animated film Spiritus, which premiered at the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival. In 2014 Young gave a TED Talk on the importance of online artistic collaboration at TEDxBuffalo. Inspired by science fiction, electroacoustic music, and graphic novels, Young's works have been presented at the Beijing Conservatory, Art Basil Miami, Turkey's Cinema for Peace, Opera America NYC, Art Miami, Animasyros in Greece, NPR Morning Edition, and festivals on 5 continents. In 2018 Young received the prestigious Cintas Foundation Brandon Fradd Composer Fellowship. The Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival awarded Young the Lois Weber Filmmaker Award in 2019. Young remains very active in the local Western New York film community. Her Filmmaker Boot Camp produces films like Welcome to Space Force and The Cure. Young is the Creative Director of BandWidth Media & Film, a Digital Media and Post Production Studio in Western, New York.
